Those younger ones of you who have only seen the movies in the last 15 years or so will never fully appreciate the power of "Episode 4: A New Hope". Keep in mind the following 2 truths:
1. At the time it was released, special effects sucked.Imagine being used to a pie-plate on a string as a high-tech flying saucer. (Alright, I exaggerate a little, but not much).
2. Very few theaters exist now to rival the theaters of 1977. I was lucky enough to see it at the Americana Theatre in Austin (Now long gone... car dealership, I think). It was a super-wide screen theater with state-of-the-art sound and soft seats that actually rocked back gently. The screen was easily twice as wide as 95% of the theaters today.
I came into the theater not knowing anything about the movie. Understand that at that time I thought "The Day the Earth Stood Still" was about as high-tech as it got! (OK, another exaggeration, but again not by much).
So the theater goes dark, the movie starts and the horizon of a planet appears on the screen. My eyes open a little wider,when suddenlya massive spaceship the likes I had never seen before blasts onto the screen. I think I literally gasped! As far as my life goes, it is not a significant event... but it is certainly one I will never forget.

Yea, I saw an interview with George Lucas where he said he did that because he only had one shot at making these go over well and he chose EP4 to start with because it was right in the thick of the action and the previous episodes weren't as 'interesting'...

That's pretty creative, releasing prequels after sequels.
(Just to recap, i go with episode 4, then 5, then 6, then 1, then 2, then rinse and repeat 37 times to be on par with a regular SW fan, right?).
37 is the "yeah i've seen starwars a few times" level
i'm on my..hm, lets see, probably 100+th time seeing it (finishing up ESB right now, gotta love that fight with vader/luke in cloud city)
