Here's my look on the books versus the movies. If a book directly contradicts at least a portion of one of the movies, consider it to be a "legend" in the Star Wars lore.
I've just started to read the books myself(damned backwater Southern Oklahoma), and I have in my lap, as I write this, my first one. I picked up volume One of the Thrawn trilogy yesterday.
Oh, and about that guy "ruining" the book in which Chewbacca died, CNN did the same to me. I was channel surfing(on the day that novel was first released), and this revelation was apparently so big that it made air time on CNN(when CNN was the big guy, instead of FOX News) and the reporters actually talked about it for a couple moments. Another reason for me to hate CNN. Damned spoilers.
It does happen in the first book, so it really didn't spoil much of the overall story arc of the series.

That's not the point. A lot of us like to discover this things ourselves.

Well, you guys know that there is going to be a Star Wars TV series? You know, in between episode 3 and 4? So, do you consider this EU content? Or movie content? Because in a year or so, George Lucas will be working on it, and it will be in your face... For better or for worse.

I guess it depends on what old George decides, as it's really he that says what's canon and what's not. In terms of what should go in game? I'd rather see the fundementals get sorted first, the extras and the addons can be looked at after.. whether things will play out that way (if the recent RotW tie in is anything to go by), is another matter entirely..

I'd recomend the Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn, the Xwing books and I, Jedi to any Star Wars fan out there; the rest reallyare a question of personal taste.
I would also recommend the X-Wing series, I avoided them at first, now I think they are some of the better ones.
The Han Solo trilogy is excellent as well.
I would avoid 'Children Of The Jedi' at all costs, gawd awful.
If I remember correctly 'Planet Of Twilight' was pretty crappy as well, either that or 'The Crystal Star' can't remember which. There were 2 right close to each other that were bad.

I listened to some audio books of EU stuff and they were AWFUL
I hear some of it is very good, but I'm kind of put off dipping into it again.
Your mai nproblem is that you listened to the audio books. The audio books are notorious for gutting stories with terrible editing decisions. Even the so called " unedited versions" are missing content from the books. I know this because I have read every EU book, and also have every one that was made into audio format here at work to listen to while I bash away at the keyboard.
I do still enjoy many of the audio books, but mostly because I have already read the actual book first. Soem of the most painfully gutted books include I,Jedi (my favorite book, and most hated audio book), the jedi Academy series (which is the one you were listening too), and several NJO books including the unrecognizable Force Heretic Trilogy (where about 125 pages of the book, the wholesecond half of the plot involving a seperate mission and plot, was summed up at the very end of the audio book with a maximum of 3 sentences)
I suggest actually reading one or two and seeing if you like it,thenlisten to the audio version with the knowledgeof what wasremoved.

Edit: oops, realised I'd only contributed to the derailment of the topic
.
Er, yes, there's a lot of stuff that's not been "proven wrong" in the EU, but it certainly isn't its death. I agree there's a lot of content missing from SWG, especially from the movies, but I certainly don't begrudge minor characters and their backgrounds getting into the game, I just yearn for more of the major charactersa far better, detailed and involving representation of the civil war/rebellion and a whole lot more Star Wars esq (yes, canon) content.
Oh, and of course an indepth and involving Smuggling system and a kick ass underworld
