Another Imperial Colonel/Master Smuggler on Starsider here.

My character is not a Smuggler but a more or less independent mercenary, and as such has been dealing with Smugglers quite a bit. The Imperial ones mostly fit the mold of the war profiteers - mid or high-ranking officers who often file a shipment of military equipment as 'destroyed in transport' or 'captured by the Rebellion' and use it in some kind of a shady deal, sometimes even selling it to the enemies of the Empire, or use their connections to improve the standing of their clients in the eyes of the higher-ranking officers. There are those, mostly of very low military rank, who engage in some more blatant criminal activities like spice deals, but their careers usually don't last very long.

Just want to throw this out for all those saying that they're Imperial Smugglers because the Empire enforces the trade restrictions that smuggling depends on.

Were there smugglers before the Empire? Yes. The Old Republic had trade restrictions, same as Palpatine's Empire.

Were there smugglers after the Empire? Yes. The New Republick had trade restrictions, same as the Empire and Old Republic.

Any government is going to put restrictions on dangerous and illicit items. If the Empire is overthrown and the Rebels restore their Republic, smugglers can continue to get richer from trade restrictions yet they won't have to worry about the... shall we say... extreme measures the Empire often employs. Oh, and the galaxy will be a better place it's not under the control of a government that's responsible for countless atrocities against it's citizens, Alderaan just being one of them.

Oh, and as for the "Imps have more money" argument...

The Empire is putting a lot of restrictions on free trade. People who have had money, who have always had money, are getting a little restless. The Rebels have more funds than you think. We even have corporate sponsors (don't believe me? How come the Rebels are the only ones to get Incom's T-65 X-wing? Incom refused to do business with the Empire and gave them to the Alliance.) I mean, you don't think that base on Hoth built itself do you? Where did Han's pile of money come from in A New Hope? He had CRATES of money! The Alliance gave him that!

I don't know about you guys, but I definitely feel what Han was saying when he gave the famous line "I ain't in this for your revolution and I ain't in this for you, sister. I'm in it for the money and I expect to be well paid."

Lets see after the "New Republic" is formed an X-Wing fighter squadron led by 2 lightside knights spend the majority of their time killing smugglers on the outer rim if i remember reading correctly. Extreme measures aren't limited to the Empire and neither is ruthlessness. It is safe to say tha in any government body large enough to attempt controlling multiple worlds will have corruption and excellence interspersed in its ranks. Even if the Emporer and Vader are evil not every young boy that signs up to be a storm trooper or imperial pilot would be. I am sure a large percentage of the imperial soldiers felt tyhey were bringing order and lawfulness to a dangerous galaxy. You may try to discount the "Dozen and Two Avengers" as being from the EU but with the amount of EU material used to construct this game I would say its fair to consider the body of work as a guide.

Ah, but The Dozen and Two Avengers were being reigned in by the New Republic, not being encouraged. Also, the New Republic was never guilty of such acts as having troop transports hover over large crowds and ordering them to disperse, then activating their ion drives and frying thousands of people instantly when the order was refused. Sure, not every member or the Imperial Navy is aware of the corruption when they sign up, but I guarantee you, every single one of them sees it before long. And if we're thrown EU references around, every smuggler who ever dealt with the Hutts out of Nal Hutta and Nar Shaddah (sp?) has plenty of reason for hating the Empire. Read the second book of the Han Solo trilogy, The Hutt Gambit. It contains the Battle of Nar Shaddah, a fight where the Empire came into Hutt space and tried to blockade Nal Hutta and execute order Base Delta Zero on Nar Shaddah... the elimination of all life and technology from the surface of a planet. The smugglers stopped them, but only because Jabba and Jilac had Han bribe the Imperial Admiral for his battle plan and then Han and Mako formed a defense around that plan. Also, the bribe may not have worked if Admiral Greelanx had not been setup by someone, probably Vader, by receiving orders to lose the battle. Note: Vader showed up and killed Greelanx afterwards even though it was likely him who had ordered Greelanx to lose.
