Thread: Lofty ideals or a promising future?
Blixtev's quote from the BH forums regarding the fact that seekers won't give out Jedi mark names or locations if they are located on Kashyyyk: Until the Producers decide otherwise, Kashyyyk stays how it is.
'Nuff said, I think.

Oh man, if SWG2 is as good as Sam and Max 2, wow, that'd be sweet. At least there wouldn't be any Jedi
Now if SWG was as good as Sam and Max 1, or Full Throttle for that matter, I'd pay 40 bucks a month to play it.

You might be underestimating the rate at which the expectations of the gamer population are reduced and the games dumbed down. I'm pretty sure the trend will continue. When was the last time you saw a Hollywood-produced movie that was actually complex, thought-provoking and simply very well done? The same people are running the show in the gaming industry.
Yep. Only thing is that the producers who will always oversee any Star Wars MMORPG will always be cashing in on that Jedi buck, only thing is that they fail to understand that an alpha class in a MMORPG is something you never put in. I would say that they used SOE as a scapegoat for their inexperience in the genre, and it is truly unfortunate that they are the ones calling the shots instead of the actual game developers who understand their product and what is healthy for their game.

A lot of people are also underestimating how good WoW really is in terms of functionality. If itwasabad game, it wouldn't have sold as many copies and maintain as many active subscriptions as it does. WoW is a really easily accessable, highly enjoyable game, and IMO, all thatWoW lacks compared to all other MMORPGsis environment for hardcore roleplay. That's *it*.
SWG's environment, in contrast, has high potential for roleplay, but unfortunately the "people in charge" (as I'm now going to call them) are too busy emulating the basics and not designing anything truly innovative. I don't even think they can be very innovative with the SWG engine as is. I'd place money on the next expansion (or perhaps the one after) being "epic size" a la CU squared, perhaps more, with LA/SOE seriously overhauling SWG's engine.

You decide!
This guy (Ward) makes a few decent notes about the state of the video game industry, but it's hard to say about whether or not his ideals -- which are matching of a rising trend in the industry -- mean much for SWG, which is mentioned toward the end of the story. I personally think they'll just scrap it and make a SWG2 instead with all kinds of new functionality, since the CU didn't go over too well and the SWG core engine is way behind. I also feel they'll continue to eliminate "time sinks" since accessibility is a key note made by Ward.
that article gives me hope...
not for this game. this game is too far gone... but maybe in five or ten years from now, the MMORPGtechnology and techniqueswill be more advanced, and they can develop a real awesome Star Wars MMORPG.
"Then there's Howard Roffman, vp of Lucas Licensing, whose team of five spends most of its day making sure that everything created under the "Star Wars" brand -- from games to novels to movies to toys -- complies with "Star Wars" history, that the timelines have integrity to them, and that character motivations remain consistent."
where the hell were these people when we needed them most? when they gave everyone the holocrons for christmas, and then told everyone how to become jedi in the old system.
i do like that they're driven to be the king of MMORPGs, and that they realize that MMORPGs arethe future of gaming. i just hope they know what it takes to make a truely great MMORPG.
if they think WoW has it nailed down, then i think the MMORPG industry is doomed.

Star Wars is filled with more potential than almost any other fictional franchise ever. the only rivals to it would be Lord of the Rings. and maybe Star Trek. all others despite their popularity among the sci-fi/fantasy crowd, do not appeal to the mainstream in the way that those three titles do.
