I'm so depressed now. Actually started playing Eve since it has some depth and complexity to it.

Good grief, that freaked me out when I read that cause I was just thinking about Eve.

Truth is for me though, immersive games are few and far between. The newest one I've played was Half Life 2. That's saying something since rpg's are supposed to the immersive games right? Sad. That's what it is.

I'm not only thinking about it, I'm playing it as we speak.

Lots of very nice underlying mechanics that should've made it to JTL in my opinion. Smuggling, piracy, PvP, trading, law enforcement, frontier space, ship customization... they got the space aspect right, but... well, that's all.

No Star Wars and no helmets though.

I once heard a very wise man say that competition is nothing more than mutual self destruction. He is right.

Competition, to me, is a lower form of experiencing something. If you follow the mentality of competing to its conclusion, I think it ends up being exactly what that wise man said. I don't go to the movies I enjoy, eat the foods I love, or play the games I do to compete. I can't even imagine competing with someone else in my effort to enjoy a movie more. Competition even seems silly if you think of applying it to things you'd never though of before. You could host a teeth brushing competition. You could stage a breathing competition. Woooo! I'd like to see that one, but the truth is that you could host one based on breathing speed or volume or volume of air displaced over a time period.

Aikido is a martial way (like an art) that focuses on blending and moving in harmony with an attacker. It is the exact opposite of competing. In Aikido, you can neutralize attackers much bigger and faster than you. They hold no competitions in Aikido, because at its core it is a system of nurturing peace and love, and the mere fact that it can actually accomplish this in physical practice is a testament to the strength that centering on cultivating peace and love possesses. You learn how to make a balanced connection to someone else who is trying to beat the crap outta you. The most amazing things happen when you do this. An attacker's body will do all of the work necessary to neutralize themselves.

When I PvP, the joy I get is more from making a connection to another player and experiencing it than "winning" or "beating them". I would like to think I have more respect for my fellow players than to treat them like a loser if I kill them.

When I square off with a player, it is to learn from them and have fun.

I'd also like to add my 2 credits about hardships. People like to claim that hardships bring rewards, but the easy path can be just as rewarding (if not a bit more enjoyable). For the record, I think that you can have challenges that do not include hardships. Hardships to me seem more like suffering and pain.

Your post made me think.

I have to disagree with your wise man though. Your wise man can be right but when he is, that's a perversion of competition. The truth is, competition is nothing more then mutual self improvement. It's not about winning or losing. The entire concept of winning and losing is dumb. If both people gain when they sparr (which in itself is a competition) then how can either lose? A person cannot gain and lose at the same time, doing so is not gain but simply change. To paraphrase Master Funakoshi (founder of Shotokan Karate), "Do not think of winning or losing. Only think of not losing." Competition is not damaging, focusing on "winners" and "losers" is.

Really, though. I think that's all just semantics and you and I hold the same belief.

If you want evidence of the Death of Games in general, you have only to look at the fact that cheat-books are sold next to every game that comes out -- generally at a discount if you buy the two together. People can't be bothered to figure out a game. You honestly expect them to explore/experiment on their own?? People are so lazy that it has seeped into their leisure activities: buy a game, buy the walk-through, shift into god-mode, follow the instructions, go on internet, brag how you beat Game X.

This game is no different. People would be totally lost without the GameGuide section. It is one thing to ask for help in a mission that is designed to require multi-player to kill the MOBs... it is another to not bother reading the NPC chats and ask for walk-throughs with the WP for the next stage.

Sadly, these lazy, worthless, pathetic excuses for gamers are now the majority. Welcome to the future of computer games.

I've been playing for around a year and I can count on one hand the amount of true RP encounters that I've had. They are among the best times I've had in game - along with some fine hunts, but they are, sadly a severe minority.

The sad fact is people pay for this game, and as such they expect what they consider as value for their money. Unfortunately, for a lot of people these days, it's the quick fix, instant result/reward that they are looking for.

Whoever it was above who said that people are losing the reality of cherishing something that they had to work hard to earn was right on the money.

It's a real dream, but I sincerely feel that it would improve the game no end if there was a creation of different servers with a specific feel to them. If there was a server created with big flashing warnings that it was a heavy RP server, then I'd hope it would attract the players that want to immerse rather than spend as short amount of time achieving as much as possible.

Hopefully the gathering of so many like minded players would mean that it would be a self regulating kind of thing. If someone who was all faster, faster, kill, kill, uber leet, was dumped into the middle of a server where people really played their roles, then I'm hoping that they'd get bored and move somewhere else. Maybe I'm just mad...

Seeing as we can already create toons on different servers, then it would allow people to choose how they'd like to play for that session. I'm sure we've all been in the situation where we feel a little deflataed that we spent time and money on playing one evening and didn't really achieve anything. It's not the normal feeling, but I think it does happen to most players.

Maybe in that case you might like to play on a server where you're not expected to RP and you can just play and kill stuff if that's the mood you're in.

It's true that things have changed with the removal of TEFs. The problem is, when you have this many people playing in an environment where they can have such an impact, then the human equation will come into play and griefing and abuse happen. That's going to provoke an outcry and will lead to change to make things 'safer'.

It's the dichotomy of MMORPGs. People want to interact with other humans, but on their own terms. They want freedom to do what they want, but not to have things done to them by such an unpredictable thing as another person. Maybe it's the mentality that they pay for it, so they should be able to control everything that affects their gaming experience - an escape from the reality of life where so often we aren't in control of things that impact us negatively.

All a bit deep this isn't it

That's why I love this community. Can you imagine a discussion like this on the jedi boards? It'd be milliseconds before the flaming started...

Thinking of changing server's since I only moved to Kauri to begin with to play with a couple comrades of mine... What's a good RP server...? does one even exist anymore?

Yeah, I feel the same way.. but the system for each of those servers should be different as well.. I don't think a single system can cater all the different playstyles.. There's too much variance in what people want.. It could solve a lot of problems, but there is a lot of work in maintaining multiple iterations of the game..

From what I've seen, Starsider appears to be a hub for roleplayers.. There is a pretty strong contingent on Valcyn as well.. however, it's a rather small server.. Not necessarily a bad thing though..

Well, in beta is was the most boring, slow-paced game I had ever tested, and I've tested quite a few.

I know they've made some changes since beta. I just didn't know if they made is suck less than it did.

The saddest thing for me is, up until this past month, I was becoming just like the people you describe. Time is change though and the error of my way was shown to me so I can hope for a better future
