Creature Handler skills can be fun if you're a smuggler and pistoleer. Send those pets in first and use them as your tank. Then you can take out that fanshot.
But I dropped it for politician (there's really quite a lot you can dabble in you know!)

There is not really a "best" template imo. Find the one that best allows you to do what you enjoy. Since you specified Master Smuggler and PvP, I recommend:
Master Smuggler/TKM/Master Pistoleer
Master Smuggler/Master Fencer/Pistoleer 1344 (+ pistol speed SEAs are highly recommended for this one)
or one of the various desperado builds

0-4-4-0 Smuggler
0-0-3-0 Bounty Hunter
All pistol all the way. Insane pistol speed and accuracy, plus you get to use the scatter pistol and you get eye shot.

Master Smuggler
TKM
Fencer x/4/4/x
Pistoleer x/x/3/x
Uses all Skill points, and give you nice Melee states defenses. Never going to pound PvP even with Master Pistoleer (i was one once), so this template leans towards melee.
