Sounds more like he was trying to scam you, in my ears.

He laughed and said he could get the whole set done for 1K/slice.

Admitedly I charge whatever they feel like tipping after the slice(s). I honestly have a hard time charging a set rate for a random service. Untill Master Smugglers can have more control over slicing I refuse to have a 'pricelist'. Sometimes this works in my favor and i get tipped way more than i wouldve charged, and sometimes i get nearly insulting tips, its all random really, but so is the slicing so it all works out
First off slicin for tips? Okay man to each is own bro but I rather stick to my 8k and not get tipped than expect random kindness from these cheap skates. That's my opinion and I respect your method but player appreciate the docs more than us.
As for 25k a slice? Damn man let me in on your secret man I need to know.
Finally 1k a slice is a complete joke, this must've been from a guildmate or something. Stick with your rate and don't give in. I'm a Master Smug and I worked for my title and skills. I make my own clamps, knives, WUK's, and I'm working on the AUK part.
Much love to my fellow smugs but don't undervalue yourselves. Docs are chargin 8...10...and even 15k per buff. Your time is valuable, don't rip off people, but don't give it away for free.

I do the same thing (slice for tips) and I gaurantee you that when all is said and done at the end of the night my average tip per slice is above 8k. Sure every now and then someone will tip you 2k to slice their weapon, oh well . For every person that gives a crap tip per slice there is another person who will tip me 20k. No lie I have recieved 200k tips for sets of armor and 100k tips for slicing a weapon.
By letting the customer decide the price I don't get as frustrated slicing for the public and in all honesty make much more $$ than I would have charged to begin with
Its funny.. I was out doing 31k mokk missions and I got a tell from a guy who wanted me to slice a few weapons for him at the mining outpost. Even if I had charged him 10k a slice.. in the time it would have taken me to slice for him I could have gone through a mokk mission. I usually only slice for guild members and thats for free.

I would like to test this theory out because after all the bottom line is the dollar (and of course repeat business). I don't want to burn anybody but my time is money and I want to make sure I get mine. I'm not going to doubt any technique until I give it a fair try first.
That being said. I've sliced a lot of containers open for people and "didn't expect a tip" never got a cred just a "thank you and a pat on the head". Now I keep a couple of pre-sliced containers for a "switcheroo" in case a crystal happens to appear in one of them.

How much I want to do the act of slicing. If I'm looking for some smuggler RP, I put the tag up and see who'll bite. If they RP, I keep the cost low.
How retarded the consumer is. If they balk at RP or don't understand, I up the price a bit. If they follow me around and spam me, if they interrupt another conversation, if they can't get a sentence out without 'u' 'ur' '4me' or 'ne1' my price skyrockets.
Some tard followed me from the starport to the Cantina, and interrupted a conversation I was having. Asked me for a slice, in front of a Stormtrooper. I took him in the back room, was going to charge 6k for a slice. He demanded a speed slice, complained about the price, and spammed me to 'hurry up'. I gave him the weapon back unsliced, and told him it was on the house. I dunno what his response was, he was on ignore by then.
