Thread: Shipwright is looking fun, but I don't want to give up Master Smuggler!

Well, maybe I should drop Smuggler... If it's going to be a crime, then I can at least feel like I did something illegal!

There are missions in which you "deliver an item while hostiles attack you" in every profession. I still don't consider [Smuggler's Alliance] pilots to be Smugglers, nor 'Smuggling' - at least not any more than Rebel Pilots or Imperial Pilots might sometimes "smuggle", with a lower-case s - JFreeman - 10/6/04

Do what you love to do. While it may seem odd, try both.

Create another toon on a different server. Check out the ship wright profession, and if you like it more then smuggler, come back to your home server and slice up your template.

My feeling however is, this is a new crafting classe available only to the expansion, everyone in the game will want to fly, so more then likely, everyone in the game will have a shipwright alt or primary.

Having been a shipwright in the JtL beta for a while now, I can tell you it is already a lot of fun and likely to be even better when all the bugs are worked out. Since the beta wipe, shipwright is greatly improved, at least in my experience, and can be quite fun to craft. I have been a tailor, a chef, an armorsmith, a droid engineer, an architect and even done a little weaponsmithing, and I can tell you that I find ship building the most fun yet.

One thing I have discovered, though - unlike other crafting professions where you can pretty much know how to experiment your product without actually using it (i.e., you can make great armor even if you never wear any), I think a good shipwright also needs to be a pilot, at least for a little while. For me, at least, I do not have good enough instincts about what is needed to make a ship "better" without actually getting out there and using it first. But since flying is so darn fun, that is not really a drawback! (now - I hope THAT does not violate the NDA!)

I would try shipwright, if I were you. If you don't like it, go back to being a smuggler. Maybe they will have fixed the profession by then.
