i wonder who else uses the word pie to refer to pizza. i know we do it here in NY, but i heard people in other part of the country don't call a pizza a pie.

It's true, oh how it's true. In addition, the "pizza" elsewhere in the country bears little resemblance to your pies. The slices are small, and not quite right. Closest thing to NY pizza around here, sadly enough, is Costco food court pizza. at least the slices are freaking huge.

Kohs you're in Queens/LI right? best damn pizza I've ever had was there. Can't remember the place though. Pepperoni slice /drool.

I guess a small consolation is that over here in greektown we have a place that makes the best chicago style pizza ever. Course you would definitely have to call those pies, since they very truely are.

yep i'm on LI now, and by this weekend i'll be living in Queens.
and yes we do have some damn fine pie, of the pizza AND fruit variety.

we also have the Bohemian Beer Garden in Astoria, Queens (not far from where i'll be living )

and right down there in Brooklyn you can get Junior's Cheesecake, arguably the best cheesecake in the world. or so i've been told.

What I'm saying is... in general, I love pie. I don't love ALL pie... for example, lemon meringue doesn't really do it for me. French silk is pretty good... but overall, my favorite is pumpkin. Now, apple pie is a different story because some are better than others. So even if we all agree on apple pie, with the lack of parity in apple pie producers, chances are that not everyone's going to be happy with it, even if everyone agrees on apple pie.

Now, getting back to cheesecake... some I love, some I don't. And the real point is... I'd rather have a piece of good strawberry cheesecake than a slice of frozen apple pie.

There are people out there, though, that can't appreciate the cheesecake if they've been focused on the pie. To them, it's pie or nothing. Anything else and they're not having it. And even if it IS pie, it better be the pie they want, goddammit! And even if it IS the pie they want, it better be just like mom made it or so help me god, they're quitting the game.

All I'm saying is... whatever we get served, I'm going to try some and try to keep an open mind about it. And I hope it's not fruitcake.

I agree... though i think brokenpie of any kind is better than a grahm craker (like the jedis wants us to have)... but as long as it isnt fruitcake .. ukk is that a possablity, cause i didnt know they might serve usfruitcake.

Southern Oklahoma here, very Southern. We don't really refer to pizzas as pies, but I know of it being refered to that way, and I don't really like other types of pie. So I thought I'd use what I knew to get me something I do like. I couldn't call myself a Smuggler if I can't bend the situation to fit my needs. Besides, is pizza that much of a stretch from such things as chicken-pot? Just a different type if you ask me.

Now I know what I'm hungry for...

A normal pizza is a pie, though barely, as it doesn't need a support tin around it. It still offers a crust which holds in a filling.

Chicago style is DEFINITELY a pie, as it does require a tin, at least during the baking process.

Don't get me wrong here. I was usuing the whole pie vs. tort analogy to say that we've just been waiting a long time for this and that I'm really hoping for a pie when it happens. I never meant to mean that we've been promised pie so we better damn well get the pie.

It's a cautionary tale. In the events I refered to, I didn't even know that any pastry was going to be provided, but when I saw the box, I was excited. In our case, we do know the Devs are coming by and that they've promised to bring dessert. They know we love pie, that we'd really be happy if we got some pie, and so they should bring some. In fact, they've gotten themselves into this mess because they told us before they'd be coming by with some dessert for us, but then called and canceled.

In short, (not strawberry short -that's a whole 'nother issue) I was saying that I'd like to have some pie rather than the fruit tort and I'm sure that a whole lot of us feel the same way. If we get the fruit tort, there will be those of us who refuse to eat it and leave. Some of uswill refuse to eat it and demand that the Devs go out and get some pie, whileothers will feel lucky to get any dessert at all and eat the fruit tort. Finally, there will bethose that will eat the fruit tort but try to get the devs to bring pie next time and there will be those who wanted pie, but decided that they liked the fruit tort better.

I'm hoping for pie, but if they bring the tort instead, I'll have to taste it before I make any decisions.
