Solo was one of the least exciting smugglers in the trilogy and EU. Lando and Karrde baby, that's what it's all about
I never found the fascination for either personally.
Lando, the businessman. Never really did much for me. Once you know he is a businessman and a good sabacc player, he never surprised me.
Karrde was always in the information business and while his organization did do alot of smuggling, I personally have not found a book where I enjoyed him as an actual character. The depth was never there for me to enjoy.
Han Solo has a developed past, with a great deal of interaction. The family conflicts combined with the ones centered on his past gave him more for me to appreciate than most others.

Have you read the Lando Calrissian trilogy?

Yet even if they are outstanding in the next two books, that's just a trilogy out of the entire EU...
So the majority of the time they remain pretty damn dull.

I disagree but I guess I'll still think yer allright. I'm not knocking Han or anything, I'm just saying there were IMO, LOTS of cool smugglers in the SWG universe. I mean personally TY-2400 > YT1300

Smuggler has to be one of the greatest RP professions. I've been one since beta. Except for slicing (money is nice I sell on vendors) there isn't a thing about it that doesn't blow inwd (well FD but hey that'll get nerfed). The pistol specials are nice but...uh...pistol also blows wind. I haven't even had my tag up in 10 months adn I still LOVE being a smuggler.
Now that I am on the jedi/smuggler run I'm pretty sure that I can qualify for Mr Gimp Universe and still...I love smuggler. Hopefully in 2016 when the smuggler revamp hits I'll stil have a few boxes so I can lament about all the wasted time that I spent enjoying my profession.
Anyone want to buy some faction? *snickers*

hmmm. I gotta read some of these books. My Star Wars experience is limited to the movies and the games. If I was to read any of the EU series which one would you suggest I start with?
Remember- Ep. III is next summer so maybe there is something that I should read that enhances that experience.

ahem...
back on topic, yeah the smuggler revamp will bring more smugglers, but they will never master cause the devs will change the prereq to master scout, master brawler, master marksmen, master medic

I don't particularly like the EU very much.I could never feel very involved with any of the books (save for the Zhan guy's series).
The books have no dynamics at all because you knew that none of the main characters were ever in any real danger or risk from a matter of their perception - if they were you weren't really let in on the picture very well. It's hard to get into a book when you know right off the bat that the main slew of characters were all going to be there just as they were in the beginning with no real changes to themselves.
I could always count on Leia being the worrying, tired politician/mother. Han Solo = Mr. Smoothie. Luke = some dilapitated version of what a particular writter feels a Jedi Knight/Master should be.
Stale, boring, stagnant. Much like that one Star Trek series Deep Space Nine. Same crap... different wormhole.
I much prefer writting/films that have their own powerful flow and dynamicism. Characters that actually move in an interesting direction inside of themselves. Take the Cowboy Bebop series... all of the characters in that series had their own specialness and the way you percieved them. You could actually see the change in Faye Valentine over the series, especially after meeting Gren and figuring out her past. She went from being a disagreeable b*tch who didn't care about anyone but herself to being a person discovering that despite the fact that her past/roots were destroyed that she really does care for her comrades and that she is really saddened by the loss of Spike and Ed... I guess she discovers just how nice other people are to be around and a fire of comraderie is born in her. It is all developed in a way that you can actually see and enjoy the changes that happen in her.
Ed changed at the end. Finally you get to see what Spike is all about. As for Jet.... he is the kinda character that remains a stronghold of strength, wisdom, and securtiy all through the series - exactly the kinda guy who never really seems to change. This unchanging aspect of Jet's is poked fun at and developed. You can see special moments where he snaps in a interesting way, just to be the same damn guy who helps his friends.. despite how tired he is at incurring losses helping them. Jet also bores the living turds outta the rest of the crew with his deep (and stale) thinking patterns. He's the guy who always thinks ever move through... understands every situation (or so puts in the time to do so).
I can't say that much for the few EU books that I have read... same people... and despite how much I expect them to have a life of their own, they are always seeming as 2D representations... poster board standups of the people we saw in the movies... being carted on a conveyor belt into the next blackhole, secret experiment, or "threat" to the Republic. Sign me up for something else.

Try the Rogue Squadron series. The thing I love about it the total focus on all new characters. It's really well done actually.

Well, there's an easy solution:there won't be any meaningful smuggler improvements warranting a population-increase until well after the rest of us have given up and moved on. Sometime after 2017, presuming the existing devs & servers haven't already been reallocated to EQ2-5.

I would also encourage you to check out books such as Tales From the Mos Eisley Cantina, & Tales From Jabba's Palace. These books dont focus to much on the SW mainstays, but ties them in very nicely to the other characters that you may or may not have ever heard of.

I'm one of those new smugglers
As I got the game there where4 characters i wanted to play:
-Stormtrooper
-Smuggler
-Bountyhunter
-Jedi
Somehow I never managed to get to one those...
The reason I never became a smuggler before was, that they didnt had any content I would identify with. I didnt want to be a drug dealer ,I cant see the connection between smugglers and slicing and Im not in the GCW, at least not with the smuggler.
Sure these are the same, but I just grind through them to have the possibility to get the "master smuggler" skill.
Why do I become a smuggler now?
Because to BE one and there is some light at the end of the tunnel: revamp and JTLS...
