Thread: Master Smuggler Should Have a Vender!
Sorry to rant on...
You can get a vendor - invest the points in business/merchant like everyone else who does.
To expect a vendor solely on that rationale that "I can craft items" is absurd. Should Scouts get vendors free, too?
Most of the items you craft are not the sort of things that would be sold in stores, y'know.
I'll support your desire for Smugglers to have free vendors when weaponsmiths and armorsmiths are able to slice their own gear without smuggler, or when weaponsmiths automatically get the certification to use every weapon they can make.
This is why they should have kept Business as a prerequisite. ![]()

Then how do you propose we sell our wares? Yelling about them at starports? We're supposed to be inconspicuous...under Imperial radar. We're not supposed to slice in public and our spice is considered contraband. This puts us in a bind because we don't transport it, but craft it. So tell me how, exactly, we are supposed to get our spices to people who may want them?

Well... can't argue with the fact that you could justify either case, with or without.
Maybe Merchants who take Politician can become Fences =P

*Points to jbezorg's above post*
I like the idea of certain NPCs being Fences, where you only hear about it via word of mouth. I mean, they moved the Rebel Recruiters from out in the open because it would make sense that they are trying to stay hidden for now. Fences too should be very incognito. I think he is trying to imply that the NPC Fences would show mainly things like who to get slicing supplies; clamps, knives, WUKS and AUKs from. Of course for the non smuggler wishing to buy spice I dont know how they would get around this, other then to perhaps buy directly from a smuggler?
Oh I dont have smuggler now but I might make my Ahazi character go smuggler so this could apply to me someday as well.
Kinda,a fence is a covert vendor not placed but 'found' by the smuggler.
Anyone can go to a smuggler's fence and buy their stuff. (provided that they know where it is an can spell the smugglers name). Once they get past the 'screening' process the get a normal vendor window.
Smugglers interact with their fence the same way a merchant interacts with their vendors.
In addition, to what I stated above. I want to add something.
- While merchants can have multiple vendors, Smugglers can only have one fence.
- Fences take a cut from the products they sell. Higher levels of underworld reduce the cut the fence takes.
- If the fence becomes empty, the fence will want a bribe to keep the relationship lucrative
- The smuggler can move on and hire someone else to be he fence but there is a chance that the old fence may take offense and hire a bounty hunter.

You either do it face-to-face, or you make a deal with a Merchant who will sell it for you, or you learn the business skills you need to sell it through your own vendor. Or a little bit of all three.
I don't think you'd want them giving away abilities of your profession to others (look at the fit many smugglers had when it was announced that Imperial Officers get a bye on contraband scans).
As for the underground nature of your profession? Well, I've seen stores where such waresare sold through a shady character in the back room or the basement. It's Ok for a smuggler to want/use a vendor... but don't expect to get for free what another class has to pay for. It's already a pretty heavy investment to be a Merchant, let's not devalue it further.
Weaponsmiths, armorsmiths, droid engineers, tailors, chefs, doctors... all of them produce consumer items. And all of them are subject to the same limitations. Why do you feel that Smugglers should be entitled to special dispensation?

That must have been in a really early beta.
In Beta 3 I remember Pistols IV, Business IV and Unarmed IV all being the pre-reqs for Novice Smuggler...

So... If spices get moved to Chef or Bio Engineer and Merchants Sell those goods, where do smugglers fit in? Carrying it from the Chef's factory sitting behind the Merchant's mall to steps of said mall where the Merchant waits? Obviously, we can't prevent others from from carrying spice otherwise we'd be our only customer so the Chef will probably carry it themselves cutting out the Smuggler completly from the loop.
Lets not shoot ourselves in the foot.
Merchants do not deal in illegal goods. They do not have the underworld contacts necessary to keep their butts out of the Imperial slammer. Merchants sell illegal goods now by default because, in short, Smugglers don't smuggle.
So. Chefs make spice. Smugglers (gasp) smuggle the spice to a Fence. Customers buy spice from the Fence. We have the professions interacting and SOE can point out that they don't promote the use of drugs because they make them difficult to find.
