Thread: I Have Set My Date to Cancel. Here's Why:

The thing is, it's so much less about the bugs or the Combat Upgrade...

Bugs can be fixed. And as long as I can Smuggle, I can work with whatever combat system they throw at me. I'm not in this game to hunt big game, do magical quests, become uber, or assault bases. I'm in it to Smuggle like I've read in the Han Solo Trilogy and various other books.

My issue is just that: Smuggling (notice the capitol "S"). Even today, nearly 2 years after launch, it takes a player to get A #1, key, important, banner information out of the SWG staff. The fact that I had to hunt Tiggs down on 3 seperate occassions to find out: 1.) If we were being worked on at all like was proposed; 2.) What was being worked on and; 3.) If there was plans for player based Smuggling.

Had someone not stepped up and asked, we would have received our revamp documents and had to find out, after all was said and done (for the prerelease part), that there was no real Smuggling involved. That's just shamefull and the reason that our profession's problems was on GamePro's list of 2004 lows. Number 11 of 20. Terrible.

And then on top of that, the simple fact that there was no player based Smuggling. I shouldn't need to go into that.

Finally, it's the lack of Smuggler community support at pushing for this. I mean, I grinded hard for 20 months to find out that after all the stuff we went through, they still didn't bother to include player Smuggling. And if it wasn't technologically possible, they didn't bother to tell us and explain why or to even accept simplified versions that might have worked. There was no effort. And then the community just...shrugs. Maybe...4..5 small posts on the matter after we found out.

That's what really done me in. More than anything. The community just...not even raising a stink on the issue. Caylin and Wes echoed our concerns in the C-Forum but that was about it. For someone like me who has been dead locked on getting that player based Smuggling in our profession and working with countless other dedicated community members and then see that as a whole, no one really spoke up...it was like being punched in the gut by your best friend. Just really disappointing.

That's about the jist of it.

hey people, some of you may remember me from way back hehe,im the crazy spanish guy with the wierd jokes no one understands.

Well i have been away for a very long time and i have been playing other MMO's.

I promised myself that once CU kicks in i would login ingame and give it a chance,i really am disapointed with a class that has lots of possibilities and to watch the devs not really gives smugglers nothing to do.

Well thats my opinion so far,ill try CU and see how i feel, its actually a shame if i had to leave swg, this was my 2nd MMO but its the one that gave me the best times.

I set a date a while back. Then I swear within a week they released the revamp concept docs, and despite the fact they're missing a couple key smuggler components, it looks like such a solid foundation any plans I had to leave were pushed back indefinitely.

Besides, I'm starting to feel a little like Lando: I've become so involved in my shipwright business and our space PVP squad that the smuggler side of me is no longer my dominant identity. In a way, it's like I've got 86 skill points locked away in the basement waiting to ripen or mature or whatever dumb metaphor you want to use, and while I'll work and fight tirelessly to see that they end up being the best they can possibly be, I don't get worked up about them the way I used to. It's a lot healthier than I used to feel about my professions.

If your game is centered around smuggling, however--and I hope for plenty of us it still does--it makes a lot of sense to set a date. To take a break, if nothing else. We will miss you, but it's just not healthy to stick with something if it doesn't look like it's got the chance to meet your expectations in a reasonable amount of time.

My date is 1 month after the CU hits live,if Im still bored at that time,I'll join my all my freinds that left for WoW instead...

At first I was like "Hell no!" But then I saw that your NAMBLA sig has been changed to WoW/Tarq Legion.

I might try it if there's a free download and trial WoW that is.

"You must do what you feel is right, of course." -Obi Wan

I'm just going to shoot strait from the hip. We are all different people with different wants, needs, thoughts, etc, and for different people these are at times addressed in different ways.

I never like seeing anyone quit this game due to being neglected and having to wait for hopes endlessly not realized.

It wasn't really my intent to harm you that bad with my retort on that past issue, really. It sucked to see you harmed like that, and for that I appologise.

I now understand that you had worn out your low gears and were just on cruise control, so my bad for socking you in the nuts at that speed.

I must admit, it is like a knife learning that we won't really get player-to-player smuggling. The pain isn't so intense because we could all truly see it coming though. I was REALLY bothered that we wouldn't get REAL bounty hunters.

At the same time, I must press that we are witnessing a combination of smugglers feeling letdown, yet at the same time finally relieved to have word on REAL work being done to us: actual plans. This mixture of emotions is causing the appearance of complacency and spinelessness. You also have the issue of the smuggling system propossal as having quite a few characteristics that really do seem full of the potential for player smuggling and player bounties. In a way, this potential is enough hope for many that things will eventually get put in that are cool, and not some lame misrepresentation of smuggling.

Add to the mix that we are VERY aware that the devs know what we want (and what we don't want). They have read our ideas, they know us, and so there is no real reason to raise a stink up because the cards have fallen for the most part. How many times do we need to say that we don't want lamed-down smuggling? How many new ideas do we have to share with them? I am pretty much convinced that they know us and our feelings about it. I could raise a stink, but I have already constructively told the devs that I'd rather have a more developed smuggling system.

Perhaps we could start a new "official" thread about how much we think the propossed system sucks.

If you tell me that we should push for something better, I'm listening. If we can start a thread and have all of us chime in and say, "Hey, put in player smuggling!", perhaps we can preemptively prevent a bad situation before it starts. We could get Wes to give a link to the thread to the devs.

Again, sorry to hear you have set a date, and you have my appologies. Perhaps this situation can be addressed and "handled". It is a tragedy to have a watered down form of smuggling, and even more of a tragedy to me to have LAME NPC bounty hunters. Who ever makes the decisions for the exclusion of this content needs to make a connection with the players.

I hope it comes down the right way for you before your timeline Capt. (which is kinda selfish because I want a hot Smuggler prof. too)- but I'm gonna hang in there.

I'm not in game often and there is A SH!T load of stuff I haven't tried-

Never hunted Bounties,

Never played a Jedi,

I've never completed a theme park-

the only way I've ever left the Corvette is in a body bag,

I've never played the MCH game of hunting for pets,

I've never taken down a base,

I'm still on the first tierof my pilot tree,

and they got things on the way-

The mining game sounds really cool.

I'm liking the CU so far,

I wanna try out some of the RotW stuff- a little-

AND we are going to get that revamp sometime (yeah, right. At least I have plenty to do 'til it comes) so, personally I CAN busy myself while I wait for them to come to their senses and give us smugglers REAL PLAYER BOUNTIES. I won't rest 'til I get them.

As for smuggling for the player base- I think I'm going to be doing that as soon as the revamp goes in. A player will ask me for some spice and I will have to smuggle it from a NPC and then pull some aside for the players order and deliver it to them (I'll also be quasi-smuggling when I go mining in space).

I guess I'm saying, I feel you. Do what you must. I will be here when you decide to come back. And hopefully it will be a better place to play in by then. I will be doing my damnedest to make it that way.

I have a thread for player smuggling, freighting and a couple of other twists on Core Systems at the moment, actually. You can find it here (clicky).

But my date was set some time ago and that date still stands. June 30th. The two-year anniversary of the first day i managed to log into SWG and immediately started working for Smuggler.

After that, we'll see.

I think I forgot tosay somethoungabout the proposed NPC smuggling system. I love it. I have no beef with it. I think it's awesome that Smugglers are finally smuggling spice rather than sitting in their backyard running it through some space-age meth-mill. Hazzah for it.

BUT...it is what it is. NPC smuggling. And right now, it's the end all, be all "end game" as far as our profession's true talents go. That's where the coolness ends and my beef begins. There's no interactive part of it other than Smugglers becoming part time drug dealers, faction contacts, and hackers to get that player to player interaction with their profession.

I just wanted to clear that up.

And it wasn't you, specifically, that did it. You and me had some words but it was the "whole picture" that I feel did it. One person will certainly not make me feel bad or do me in. Ever.

So, don't apologize for voicing your opinions. That's what's made this community the very best. I just felt like I did my very best, was disappointed at the results, and instead of the community getting behind the issue, it sort of laid down and took what I was saying the wrong way.

Not your fault. Not the community's fault. No one should be blamed or persecuted for their ideals or opinions...unless their insanely stupid or foolish ((*cough*Jedi*cough*))

Thanks for replying, Ternque. And, just as proof I hold no animosity or anything...who was hanging out and joking around with everyone that I was "arguing" with in the SIN chat a day or two after the ordeal? Just to clear that up as well.

Well Nick, let me just say that I am really down about how dissapointed you are. Your analogy about being punched in the gut by your best friend really brought the whole thing home for me. I know that I already posted in your other thread on the issue, but let me speak on the subject some more.

[snip]

What I do know is this. In the wake of the void that was created when EN, Solo, Kav, and Dreven left in the span of 2 or 3 months; you made a strong and influencial difference in this community. I have always sought out your posts, and listened to what you've said with interest and an eagerness for more. You are one of this community's leaders, and I hope you are able to stay that way.

Here's what we do from here on out. I accept that we have dissapointed you, I don't like it, butI accept that you have your feelings on the subject and you have a right to them. But, take a look at the posts above this one....those are some strong Smugglers who have already followed your path (or at least gone vocal about them after you did).

[snip]

I somehow skipped this post. Sorry, just read it.

I really appreciate the support and all. Means a lot. But I want everyone to know that they're probably looking to the wrong place for community "leadership" if you've got me placed there. Fish, Caylin, Wes, Dreven, Geevo, JTG, ect. Those are the guys that everyone should go to. I encourage all newbies, members, and veteransto seek out their posts and listen to what they have to say. All I do is look to those real leaders, way their opinions against my own, and respond with my own feedback. Just like everyone else. Hope that didn't come off as rude or anything, but...I think I'm just out of place when grouped with them.

And I don't think anyone should feel like they didn't pass my approval. I'm just another player. I was not disappointed at any one individual. Just disappointed that the situation didn't get responded to (at all imho).

I have been rather surprised at the number of people saying "I was disappointed to and I have set a date as well". I mean no disrespect but I figured most people in that catagory were keeping quiet because of a community sensus. I really hate that so many have this plan but I must confess that it makes me crack a smile knowing that I'm in the same boat with some other people and not alone.

Thanks, Arashi and everyone else as well.
