Smuggler Archive
Thread: when i was a noob...
When I was a newb...I had never played an MMORPG before. I had heard people could be evil. So I create Jakkes and log into (where else?) Mos Eisley. Wandering around in amazement as my girlfriend rolled her eyes and laughed I am quickly chased by a Spice Fiend and being shot at I start to yell 'I'm new, please don't shoot me!'. I thought everyone was being controlled by a RL person.
It was then that some Smuggler killed the fiend, explained the game to me, gave me a few guns and some creds. Although he ignored me when I asked how to pause the game...
Oh man....
Three years agao while playing DAoC someon told me about this new game that was being developed...Star Wars Galaxies. I did some research and found a forum dedicated to a set of people who had like minded ideas. I am a Brit, all these guys were Americans. We spent a year creating a PA, deciding that we were going to be criminals and work for Jabba. One of the most devatating things to happen to us was before launch when they decided that GCW would only be 2 groups and not the original 3 (criminals being the third) that was envisaged. We spent a year roleplaying on the forums and fleshing out our characters to be....I was going to be a wookiee smuggler!
Then the game came out in the states and one of my guild buddies mailed me the game so that I was live by 3rd July 2003. I was a Wookiee called Korrassusboo, on Starsider. The first thing I did was recieve some cash to get a shuttle to Bestineand then walkto Wayfar, which was where the entire guild was hanging out. That took about 15 minutes of dodging every red creature on the radar. With no player cities Wayfar rocked, players congregating in the cantina, guildies crafting me things to wear and use. I was impressed by the crafting process and did a slight u-turn, becoming an artisan and then ended up being a Master Droid Engineer.
We placed houses near to wayfar and turned one into a 'cantina' and formed our city, 'sandstorm' well before player cities were invented. That placed just became sandstorm when the content was added to the game. That was kinda cool, but a sad end to the popularity of Wayfar. My DE exploits were known throughout the galaxy and sandstorm City was always a big pull place for Jabba and BHs going to Wayfar. But as often happens guildies disappear and I was left on my own.
So one year ago I created an alt on Chimaera and decided he would be a human and combat orientated and guess what, the smuggler in me finally came out...pistols and smuggler here we go. I have found a new guild and a great cit, Fellowship, on Talus. But the other week I logged Korrassusboo back on, all his shops are still there (minus vendors) and Sandstorm city is still thriving on Starsider. The place was still similar and well, ahh, to reminiss is kinda cool!
I remember when my first toon, a zabrak female named Bindy, she got novice swordsmen, and I remember I took down a bantha on my own, i was like I AM A BAD A55!!! YEAH! I felt sooooo powerful!!
Those first weeks where so fun, I remember learning to craft and a (Helper) helped me learn how tools get used with different stations. I remember tatooine guild halls, and being so in awe over the large house, dreaming one day I would have one. i remember the first time I saw a probot...
I remember the first time I bought a non-ch tiger and named it kitkat.
I remember back when i got master doc, and I would go to the tuskan cave, and get grouped with newbies and scream at them to stop running away so I could heal them, and trying to drag an incap'd player so i could rez them. I remember running out of rez packs. I remember dying alot.
I remember PVP battles between us and our neighbor guild. I remenber the first time i saw a nightsister, and then I died ![]()
One of my favorite days was when they broke the game and anyone, could use any weapon. That ruled. I barrows a comando's missle launcher. it ruled.
One of my most memorable noob experiences was going on an escort mission. You know, you go out to the desert, find some guy who's lost and bring him back to town?
Yeah, I didn't realize that you just had to talk to him. So, there I am, walking slowly so I don't lose the guy and he keeps following me. Usually they'd just disappear when they got back to the limits of Mos Eisley. Well, one of 'em didn't! So I decide I'm going to escort this thug through the streets.
I was still enjoying the wonders of the universe and marvelling at all of the little things around me. I'd run forward a few dozen yards and wait until the guy caught up with me.
At one point, I'm almost back to the criminal I was working for (I had decided it was time to become direputable) and I see a guy with "Helper" above his head. I wave and him and say, "Hello, helper." He greeted me in return. I asked him what exactly a helper was and he explained and asked me if I needed any help. I said not at that time. He asked me if I wanted to go hunting. I was in the middle of typing to him to tell him that I was on a mission when he whips out his pistol and shoots the thug I was escorting DEAD! My jaw was agape. I was stunned that he had just killed my mission.
"That guy was my mission! Not entirely helpful, helper!"
He laughed at me and ran off. Funny stuff!
I remember myfirst fight against a Krayt Dragon Ancient. I nearly shat myself at it's size.
I have a 21" CRT I use when I play and man, when I had that chase-cam zoomed all the way out and that dragon STILL filled my screen, I felt so tempted to run for the nearest shuttleport. However I was with guildmates and I decided to hide behind one of them instead.
True story.

i thought that i would get hurt by those flies. like they were some kind of deadly Tatooinian insect... so i avoided that swarm at all costs.
When I started my first toon, before I went to Eclipse with my current one, I started the game but wanted to look around a bit. Everything was new and shiny, this was my first time in-game. I had my carbine out and ran to the edge of the city but stopped dead with fear at the wall. I saw all these rills milling about and thought for a little while about shooting them but eventually thought better.
But the pure rush of looking out the gates of Mos Eisley and knowing that anything out there could kill me... that was pretty cool.

When I was a newb...I still had highhopes that I wouldn't be some Star Wars theme park mascot mascarading as a washed up Han Solo pretending to smuggle. Now my full-body costume hasn't been washed in 6 months and it reeks of sweat and futile dreams.

the Man, the Myth, the Mystery, the Legend! I read your post, sucks that sh*t has come to waiting until we are all 60 year old, near retired people before we even get to do our job.
