yeah i'm very concerned about this general level based certification idea

it seems like it will take away from the diversity other aspects of the CU will provide.

I just think it sets a bad precidense. No longer having to invest skill points in something to be able to use it. (sound familiar to anyone?) I also think if this is the case, in a year we'll be back to a definitive Uber 1337 Template running around with the best specials on just about any weapon. While i'd like being able to use different weapons and such, i think evenutally it's going to cause more trouble than it's going to be worth.

Well if the better weapons aren't where we can get them it shouldn't matter. This is one of those balance things where it's all dependant on the numbers and if worse comes to worst then they can just de-cert people and scale it back.

well we'll have to see just how much less effective we will be with unskilled weapons versus weapons we have the skills to use.

if the ability to use the unskilled weapons is drastically lower then that will prevent any cookie-cutter uber leet templates from forming.

but at the same time it won't solve the problem in trying to grind up a second prof from scratch. as we'll being doing little damage, but to get any xp we'llstill have to kill the same higher level mobs as we would with our skilled weapon.

No, you'll have access to higher damage weapons (like an FWG5 instead of a DL44 because you're combat level says you can have one). So you won't be stuck fighting UBER-mobs with a spatula or stomping on bugs for a point a pop.

I guess we'll see when TC comes up, but it doesn't sound like a well-thought idea. First they went to all that trouble to prevent people from using armor they weren't certed for and now they're doing the exact opposite with weapons in the middle of the beta test? Hmm. Seems fishy to me.

I'm not. Because it doesn't matter what you're certified to USE if you don't have the skill points to make it work. This is why we have general ranged skill and general melee skill. It seems kind of silly to have general ranged skill but not be able to fire a rifle. The most sophisticated rifle still operates on the principal of aim down the site and pull the trigger. But a "Rifleman" will always be better because they have Rifle skills to go WITH the General Ranged skills.

That is actually a present suprise for me. It'll be nice to use other weapons if for no other reason then for RP purposes.

After sitting on that weapon cert answer and attempting to decipher the new cert "rules" that helious posted in the commando forum I'm beginning to think they've all either given up or gone crazy (or maybe a little of both).

I have no issue with it. If anything it's much more realistic for me to be able to pick up and fire a rocket launcher, but me unable to hit sweet fa without the heavy weapon Acc and Spd bonuses from Commando

Yes, it takes away something from the combat support professions like us and SL. But so what? I hated the idea that people with no desire to be a smuggler would be attracted to the profession to get the Renegade, and I'm sure SLs felt the same.

A few things, on the weapon cert topic, as I understand them:

I beleive this was done in response to another issue brought up in the chat. Namely, to livel, say... Rifles after I'm already a midlevel Pistoleer, I'd normally have to use a CDEF... but for XP, I have to use a CDEF against soemthing at that midlevel. This is a problem, especially for the solo player, as you have to plink at a L40 or whatever with a crappy CDEF. Now, they could fix this by making level change with weapon equipped... which migh cause us other problems, I think, related to defense mods and stuff. Or, they do what they've done: allow us to use a rifle at our level to hunt even cons. Which, on a side note, since XP is higher for even cons at higher levels, means the added bonus of cranking us through the new tree faster. In essense, it rewards us for already having soemthing levelled up more. Not a bad thing, to my mind.

Now, okay, maybe we wanted to keep our smuggler guns, or whatever. Commando has the problem especially, and they're rightly incensed over there, as their weapons *are* what makes their class different. But they've also said certain weapons will retain the class distinction. I expect that, in addition to certain quest-based weapons like the Scythes, most or all commando weapons and things like the Master-level Renegade pistol will also be retained by the profession they belong to as exclusive certs, once everything settles out, and as certs are finalized.
