Which is why it'd be a great incentive to obey Imperial law... Or hire a Smuggler to break it for you.
Besides, jail times should be like half an hour if you pay a 50k fine or some such... two hours if you can't. And that timer should count down even if you are logged out.

I totally agree, this isn't appropriate for implementation on all players. Like I said, some people LIKE bondage. This would be a good kinda mini quest for these deranged persons to do. My two credits.

I know, sounds wimpy, but listen up!Have a player or group of players be able to be put in jail as a sort of quest they would do for fun. They would talk to an NPC to get them involved in what is happening. Now while in prison, they could do a number of things that you mention, and having a smuggler on this quest would be a definite bonus. There are an asston of stories you could implement, including gathering information/materials from other cell mates or guards, accessing facility blueprints, etc. etc. etc.Being put in prison is a very big deal, not something that could or should happen at random. Make it a special quest, where a smuggler would be quite handy in.
OR! Even better, Have that be the end result for failing Certain quests/missions. Combine this concept with our desire to see player bounties and... You take a special mission, you fail/choose not to complete it, you go onto the BH terms, the BH comes, incaps you, /dbs, but the db instead warps you to jail, no item decay. Eh? Eh?

That is why the option of Paying a fine instead of going to jail. Makes it 100% player option. Also do as mentioned above, Continue to avoid areas that havecrack downsquads.

I have problems enough trying to get people accept the idea that carrying illegally modified items should result in a penalty if discovered. Big argument in the c-forum over that right now that I'm wading into neck deep. No way that the majority of the playerbase would accept their toon being warped to a jail.
However, a jail could be present in say... an instanced smuggler situation where something went wrong. Where we pay the cost of discovery and have to see if we can get out of it.

How about suggesting that they just make sliced items unusable unless you have Slicing III and IV for the respective equipment. That should really make some heads explode.

As good an idea as this sounds, that means even more dabbling into the prof, and then people will just complain and have it taken away again. Big Fines are an idea too, but how big a fine does it need to be to really hurt? Most players have 10s of thousands on them at their poorest, so fines would really just hurt the new players (are there any new players?) and SOE isn't going to do that. This patch is really here to make life easier for the new player. People that they hope will start up now that the Station Access is here. I think we're gonna see a lot of casual players that complain a LOT soon.

Just read that thread, might as well post my comments on it here. TOUGH T*TTY for the playerbase. As someone pointed out in there, if carrying illegally modified goods is subject to GREAT risk, and HUGE penalties, only the people willing to deal with said penalties will carry them, thus making them consent to whatever punishment the devs see fit. These people who take these risks will also gain an advantage over the other people who don't, giving incentive, but not forcing, people to take these risks. To the people who say that jail is a bad idea because its not consented to... bollocks, it's totally conesntual. Don't break the law.
Okay, now here's something I don't say every day, the Devs need to stop listening to the Corrs so much
Not all the corrs, they should listen to Wes, and maybe a few others, but the rest should be relegated to the "okay, thanks for your suggestion, now wait over here while the big people talk" corner.

That's the point, there's nothing wrong with dabblers. The game was designed so their could be. The point would be that they would have to have some knowledge so they don't blow themselves up with their gun. It would also create more appreciation of slices and possibly make them choose between which is more important to them , the extra mods or the sliced weapons and armor. It would have a quasi balancing effect a well. It wouldn't take slicing sales from Masters because as it is, the people who go to them are the ones hoping for that little extra percentage.

Its the same problem as the crackdown. Its another penalty on the rebels and on the neutrals. While the imperials walk off scott free. Result people will hate it. Plus it does make smuggler too needy. If its a short stay why bother with a smuggler go get a bite to eat and come back. Too long and people will throw fits.

first of all, I'm hopeful that Imperials will one day be subject to punishment as well. And it Las to be a long enough period of time to warrant escape.

How about a %-fine? Say someone with 10 Million gets fined for 100k and someone with 10k just for 100 or 1000.
