Neither did Lando. Why should I have to be FORCED to get a useless skill tree like Business when I'm setup very nicely with the current skillset pre-reqs, and so are hundreds of other smugglers?Han Didn't, but he knew how to do business, Lando Was a 'respectable businessman, and a responsible leader' even though he wasn't paying any taxes on his gas mining operation.
I'm looking at this more from an RP perspective, just because it doens't give me a combat benefit. I now have the skill to call mysself a 'business man' instead of blatantly announcing that I'm a criminal, and I can have at least one lackey to push the Illegal stuff that I skim from Jabba =)

It would be interesting if your lacky/pusher/"fence" were the same character as GM's proposed sidekick.
And even though I'd hate to think that unarmed XP would be esentially useless, I think the Business line is much more in keeping with a smuggler. The business world is all about making contacts, knowing the who's-who of the industry and reading people. Smugglers do this better than anyone, because they're finding people who don't like being found, and reading people who don't want you to know them. It makes more sense overall than having two dedicated combat trees, when less than 1/2 of being a smuggler is fighting.
You can use the spice tree for the same type of argument that Domestic Arts 4

Slicing is a dirty business, and has nothing to do with the "respectable" engineering 4.
That is absolutely right, and the term is business. Someone stated that Lando and Han didn't have vendors. Well, I guess that's right, but Business isn't all about having vendors. Its about making money. And what is smuggling about? Making money.
Business IV, and this is just my opinion, has more to do with smuggling than any of the possible pre-reqs discussed with the possible exception of Ranged IV. Which is why I think the pre-reqs should be ranged IV and Business IV. I know a lot of people like having Engineering IV because they want to be weaponsmiths or armorsmiths and slice their own weapons...cut down on the middle man. I understand that point of view and am sympothetic to that. However, I also believe those people really aren't most of us consider "smugglers." And that is of no fault to the people who do this. That is the way game was made and people capitalized off of it. I would just like to see a closer representation of what we think of as a "smuggler." We really don't have that right now.

I think that smugglers should have Ranged IV and business IV in the artisan tree. I say ranged IV because I think its fair to say that most smugglers (not in game but in the Star Wars universe) were gunfighters and not handfighters. So Ranged IV makes a little sense but leaves it open to dabble in pistols, carbines, rifles or you could advance in just one and work on Pistoleer, Carbineer, or Riflemen while you work on Ranged IV. Business IV because smugglers IMO are more businessment than craftsmen. Slicing isn't the predominate issue for smugglers (not in game but in the Star Wars universe), smuggling is. Making contacts, having business associates, and acting professional are more important than pulling out a spring here to make the gun reload a little quicker. But thats just me.

I agree with changing the requirements to ranged 4 and buisness 4. This is much closer to what a Smuggler really is. Many Smugglers could get by in life without fireing a single shot, you only need to fight when you 'screw up'.
Personally I would still pick up combat skills because I want to rid the world of those ugly flesh-eating chubas, but if you leave the decision a little more open I think a greater variety of smugglers would populate the galaxy.
I think it should be a novice prof, simply because you could have a whole range of elites that build off of this profession. *shrug*
