Thread: Smuggler as a novice profession?

Has this idea been discussed at all?

I've seen mention that Greenmarine wants to change the requirements for the smuggler profession, but really, there is nothing out there atm that makes sense for smuggler to progress from.

If the smuggler worked like the politician profession (i.e. not a starting profession but can be picked up by anyone) then smugglers would have more freedom in choosing their combat skills (not forced to take any combat skills) and the tree itself could be more focused on smuggling.

From the smuggler profession, you could then have the room to progress into more underworld trees. Ideas include a full slicer profession, a full spice dealer/crafter profession or even that "just for fun" crime lord (that does sound like soooo much fun).

Do you guys think this idea has merit?

I think it's a bad idea. It will just lead to more people dabbeling in smuggler. At the moment there's a lot of possibilities for smugglers to dabble in other professions. I think that a smuggler should have some combat skills... after all being on the shady side of life can be dangerous.

I'd rather see a novice underworld profession, from where you can go to different elite underworld professions such as smuggler or crime lord.

Just my oppinion.

Maybe change the prereqs to Engineering(which it should have been anyway) and one line of any starting combat prof.

If they changed it to a novice profession I'd probably drop triple master to work on a defence stack. But to be fair there's nothing stopping me from doing that now. I can be master smuggler and still do a lot with the 129 points that are left.

Back in Beta Engineering was a pre req. But pistol, and unarmed was also. They didnt just cut/paste...They just cut out eng.

I've just had an Idea...

GM has said that smugglers shold not have a set weapon requirement.. Here is a simple answer.. don't have a combat skill requirement.

Have a Combat XP Requirement set high enough that one would have had to level up at least one combat tree in order to have acquired enough combat XP.

Only problem I see is taht would allow smugglers to drop the combat aspect completely to save Skill points.. NM maybe its not such a good Idea.

The ranged Support tree would kinda work that way as a pre-req, but not really applicable to melee.

Anyhow, whoever it gets set up I think it would make the most sense to have 1 combat tree, and the Business tree from Artisan as a Pre-req, with a tiny hiring bonus at novice smuggler, so we can have 1 ugly NPC pusher =P

I think that smugglers should have Ranged IV and business IV in the artisan tree. I say ranged IV because I think its fair to say that most smugglers (not in game but in the Star Wars universe) were gunfighters and not handfighters. So Ranged IV makes a little sense but leaves it open to dabble in pistols, carbines, rifles or you could advance in just one and work on Pistoleer, Carbineer, or Riflemen while you work on Ranged IV. Business IV because smugglers IMO are more businessment than craftsmen. Slicing isn't the predominate issue for smugglers (not in game but in the Star Wars universe), smuggling is. Making contacts, having business associates, and acting professional are more important than pulling out a spring here to make the gun reload a little quicker. But thats just me.

/agree If that were to happen, every weaponsmith/armorsmith/etc. would compliment their line with smuggling skills. You'd have dabblers all over the place.

I like it the way it is. I really would hate to see more dabblers.

Personally, I like Mace's idea about have Ranged Support 4 and Business 4. I really don't like unarmed 4 being a prereq.

Slicing is a dirty business, and has nothing to do with the "respectable" engineering 4.

That is absolutely right, and the term is business. Someone stated that Lando and Han didn't have vendors. Well, I guess that's right, but Business isn't all about having vendors. Its about making money. And what is smuggling about? Making money.

Business IV, and this is just my opinion, has more to do with smuggling than any of the possible pre-reqs discussed with the possible exception of Ranged IV. Which is why I think the pre-reqs should be ranged IV and Business IV. I know a lot of people like having Engineering IV because they want to be weaponsmiths or armorsmiths and slice their own weapons...cut down on the middle man. I understand that point of view and am sympothetic to that. However, I also believe those people really aren't most of us consider "smugglers." And that is of no fault to the people who do this. That is the way game was made and people capitalized off of it. I would just like to see a closer representation of what we think of as a "smuggler." We really don't have that right now.

Personally I hate the idea of lumping Business into Smuggler. Han Solo didn't run a Vendor. Neither did Lando.

Why should I have to be FORCED to get a useless skill tree like Business when I'm setup very nicely with the current skillset pre-reqs, and so are hundreds of other smugglers?

Han Didn't, but he knew how to do business, Lando Was a 'respectable businessman, and a responsible leader' even though he wasn't paying any taxes on his gas mining operation.

I'm looking at this more from an RP perspective, just because it doens't give me a combat benefit. I now have the skill to call mysself a 'business man' instead of blatantly announcing that I'm a criminal, and I can have at least one lackey to push the Illegal stuff that I skim from Jabba =)
