If you want pistol knockdowns, then you're probably better off grabbing novice pistoleer and going up the stances (combat experience) tree. Along with the pistoleer knockdown shots (pistol melee defense 1 and 2), which work more often than low blow; you'll get the speed increases. As a smuggler, you're piling up combat experience which you can't use in the smuggler tree anyway; so you might as well spend it on something useful.

This is far from the truth. I rely on low blow in pvp and pve more than I do TKA knockdown/pistol melee defense 1.

Pistol melee defense 2 doesn't knock down the target (just a high dmg rate)and pistol melee defense 1 is a close range knock down.

If you're fighting someone with a high defense or dodge rating, you'll be lucky to knock the target down, regardless which KD you use. It's better to try to KD a fencer at 50m than it is to try it at 10m.

In regards to the original question:

Low blow will work better as you climb the pistoleer tree. I believe there must be at least two "rolls" going on to see if you KD them. One is to hit which depends largely on your Pistol Accuracy rating, and one is to actually knockdown which is offset by the targets Defense vs KD. While I am positive we'll never have any real formulas to work on, Low Blow clearly worked better and better for me the higher I went up the pistoleer tree. Once I hit master, and slapped a few +Pistol Accuracy tapes on me, I was getting decent results everytime.

In regards to the covert scanner question:

If using a covert scanner is "cheap", then using any tool in the GCW which results in the death of an opposition member is also cheap. No one, and I please encourage you to prove me wrong on this (you can't by the way), twisted your arm and forced you to join a side. You had to physically walk up to the recruiter and say "Sign me up", and repeat again "Yes I'm sure!". While it sucks that coverts can be forced into non-consentual PvP, that is in fact a risk you knew when you signed up to fight. If you don't like it, resign from the faction. Until the GCW fix publish when Group TEFs, etc are all fixed, you either live with the bugs and accept the occasional death, or you can call it an exploit and come to the forums to complain about it and expose your underlying moral fibre

Did you run up to some coverts, place a covert detector right next to them, then kill those unbuffed, unarmored, unarmed saps? I'm a Rebel, that has happened to me before. Dunno if it is griefing, but it sure is cheap. (btw, I'm not saying you did this, just that it happened to me.) Where do you post about exploits/to find out what are exploits?

**edit** NO! They were TEF'ed riding around the Imperial Outpost on Lok. I ran out the base and opened fire. When the 3 buffed rebels decided they couldn't even try to take on one buffedimperial, I low blowed the one and knocked him off. Dont give me this covert **edit**.

While this IS the way the game mechanics work, it's still cheap. SOE sold many coverts on the idea that they could participate in the GCW without having to PvP. Due to some bandaids that were placed on PvP, this turned out to be false. While there is lots of non-PvP content that is accessable in the GCW, it's very clear that at the moment GCW is only viewed by the powers-that-be to be for PvP. To me, that shows serious myopia and brings integrity issues into question. I love this game, but stuff like this is pretty annoying. At the time I signed up for the faction, we were still being fed the line that PvP is only for overts. The first time my buddies got mowed down at the Imperial Oasis by PC's who were hunting folks with TEF, I realized that we'd been had. Of course, that was a long time ago and we've come to realize that when covert we sometimes can still get pulled into PvP. That doesn't make it right, though.

Sorry, I know this is off topic, but this aspect of the GCW is a serious pet peeve of mine. Not because I get cheezed off at dying. Dying's part of life. It's because we got the bait-and-switch on this issue and no one seems to realize how immersive the GCW can be for non-PvPers. Also I HATE the cliche "If you don't wanna PvP stay nuetral" line. That'stotally myopic and ignores the real issue. I wrote a big post aboutthe GCW from an RPer's perspectiveon the GCW forums last week. I think I'm gonna add the URL to my sig.
