all a matter of opinion; for every person that says they hate EQ2 or WoW's way of combat, there are 5 who say differently. *shrug*

Okay, we don't really have to worry about the damage-dealing thing. First off, experience seems to be granted based mainly on two things: level of mob and your own level. If you hurt the mob at all, you'll be granted a significant amount of xp, so even if we were a mezzing-based profession, we'd still be able to level just as well as anyone. (There's some other things that affect it (like grouping) which I have no idea how they work, but those seem to be the main ones.)
Second, we don't really seem to be mezzers.. some of our skills look to be crowd control-related, but a lot look to be damage-dealing, or state-healing. It'll be hard to tell till we can test those skills, of course. Right now, though, it looks like a lot of the concerns of this thread aren't going to be problems for us.

Mezzer is a fairly common MMO term. I'm quite pleased with the new role.
I agree! My alt has been sitting without a single skillpoint spent while I play my Jedi. This smuggler change is EXACTLY the role I want to play in this game, so a smuggler she shall be! Perhaps I'll combine it with creature handler for a little added crowd control through offtanking.

Thanks for clearing that up. I had no idea what a "Mezzer" was. Now I can assume it is slang for a mesmerizer. Might be a good idea if SOE would avoid using slang in their official documents...especially obscure slang. I makes them look less professional and creates unnecessary confusion.

Neither the abilities that we're getting, northe role we've been assigned in the CU will affect, hinder or replace/remove our slicing and planned Smuggling abilities; remember, all that was planned with the knowledge of what was in the CU.
Smugglers have mez (mesmerise) abilities and some offensive abilities; for me, this fits with the idea that Smugglers want to play dirty and rough so they can get the heck out of a situation and go deliver their cargo. Whether we have sufficient ability to warrant the relative numbers assigned, remains to be seen, but from what I hear, Smuggler's something fun and useful to have as part of your combat template.

I'm trying to understand why a smuggler would think they are a master pistoleer without becoming a master pistoleer. It's like me, as a bounty hunter, thinking that I as a jack-of-all-trades should be a master pistoleer/master carbineer/master rifleman without actually grinding those skills. Just because I'm a bounty hunter doesn't mean I've put all the work into those weapons. What an insult to the masters of those skill trees.
A smuggler knows just enough to get him and his team out of hot spots and to live to smuggle another day. You want to stand and go toe-to-toe when you get in trouble, then master TKM, as well. You want to use your pistol more effectively so you don't have to run from combat, master pistoleer, as well. Han Solo was much more adept with his pistol than being just some guy who carried it around for protection. I'm assuming this is the concept with the smuggler profession.
I don't see it as you running away all the time. I see it as you buying time to finish your opponent off.
Well, like others, I'll wait and see. I like the smuggler concept and may make the move to join the underworld.
