Thread: IS This Game Really That Bad???

I'm a master smuggler and i'm also a very casual player. Hell I haven't played since may (mostly because i'm

deployed). Now I know alot ofvetsand hard core gamers are leaving the game but maybe thats because they

played it too much. I use this game to unwind after a long day. Most of the time I just go on to chat with

freinds. Sometimes I just go on to explore and take screen shots. The point is I think people have unrealistic

expectations of this game. The fact is if you play anything to much you burn out on it.I just got off the GCW

forum where everyone is complaing about JTL content. I mean they are really angry. They didn't complain about

lag time or that the game was unplayable they complained that it wasn't all consuming. Some even complained

that it made them lonley. I can't belive that. Even with smuggler i'm not bent out of shape. I mean so what

if you can't smuggle yet. We know that they have it on the agenda. I kind of like the anticipation (caylans post

about the conversation in the starport in tulas brought a big smile to may face). Anyways i'm rambling. I just

think this game is great for the casual player. If nobody else feels this way i'll just shut.

I'm kinda with you on this one CyrusJ. I'm a casual player and enjoying the whole ride of being a smuggler (not master yet but hey I'll get there ).

have a friend who started same time as me and has powered his way to TKM, is working on a range of badges etc just to get to Jedi, and he is already starting to sense that he is burning himself out with regards to any sense of fun in playing. crank out xp to reach TKM/Rifle template killnig machine, crank out Jedi xp ...then what?

Sometimes its the journey, not the arriving, thats important

Its not the game, its the development and support staff behind it.

I agree with the original poster. But therein lies the problem... it's a catch-22. The game was SO exciting to explore when I first started playing that I couldn't help but play it too much. So I go through ups and downs now... some periods where I almost quit, others where I try something different and recapture the excitement.

The thing people complain about with this game is the same thing that keeps most of us from leaving...untapped potential. Its frustrating to see all the possibilities, to think "this would be great if one little thing were changed" and thennot have it happen, but all in all the game is still fun after the 5 or 6 months I've been playing which is longer than I've ever played anything.

It's exactly this and what Kal wrote for me. It's very frustrating to see what this game could but most likely never will be. It's to see things like the smuggler revamp being pushed to sometime in the future that may never come. And it's the many useless things you learn in professions. For me DAoC was the MMORPG I've played the longest with more than 2 years, at the highest lvl (lvl 50) my Character had skills in several skill lines, the highest was Large Weapons in which I had all. In this skill line, you learn 14 styles with two-handed weapons, and there was not a single one I had no use for, however there was a problem that entire skill lines were of no use... but as long as you chose one that is, you had use for most to all of the skills you learn in it. If you get master Pistoleer, you too learn 14 unique specials (counting skills like body shot1. body shot 2 and body shot 3 as 1) and I never had use for more than 4 of them, being Kip up Shot and Roll Shot at marksman and health shot 2 and fan shot at pistoleer. Sure Pistoleer is one of the most broke, but I doubt there are many professions in this game for which every of their specials is useful.

Long story short: no. It's not that bad, it's what you make of it. Though it could certainly be much better.

I took 7 months to Master Smuggler. I'm a casual gamer in that for me it's not about more XP or getting that next box, it is just hanging with friends and having fun. I recently started my alt character, Oakai's little sister, because I missed the fun I used to have with Oakai chasing baby animals around back before I had to give up CH to use my SP to finish off Smuggler as I finally made my way up the boxes.

I agree that it is hard because at first everything is so exciting you can't help but log on all the time. At the same time though, overall, I feel this game does pretty well. After 10 months I still can't wait to get home and log on. Of course a lot of this has to do with the relationships I have with people in game. My guild is great, I love roleplaying with them and just having a good time.

Yeah there is a lot of potential here. I really hope the Smuggler revamp happens and gives us some good stuff! Meanwhile I'm taking my time and just enjoying the ride. Perhaps the problem is a lot of people see it as and end game sort of thing. I need to do x y and z so that I can "win" by getting t. This game isn't really built for that...it's more about living day to day as little pixely star wars characters I think that is why you find a lot of people complaining about lack of things to do. They just have a different playing style.

I find the forums more aggravating than the game. the amount of silly complaints and poor language (ie, not exactly polite people at times) is very annoying. People love to cry about anything. "It's been FIVE minutes since Pub 10, where is the Old Man?? You #@!$@#$ SOE!!!!111!!!!" People want fast food gaming, gimme it all NOW. Then cry because they're bored. There's no winning.

Having said that, I am very displeased with the conduct of SOE. Game quality debates aside, their communication skills are atrocious. This I believe is the root of all the evil. Silence is not always golden, and SOE are masters of not sharing information. Rather, they let rumours and ill founded stories run rampant. Or worse, the impression of apathy on their part to address big ticket, and simple issues. I think they need reminding that there are grown adults playing this game too, we're not all snot nosed doodz that are better off ignored.

Even this website is poorly designed. Pertinent information to the gamer should be in big bold letters, one shouldn't have to search through forums using this godawful lithium system just to find out simple things from devs themselves. If it wasn't for 3rd party sites, I'd be lost in this game.

The game itself is entertaining, but I'm salivating for JtL.

No, it is not a Bad Game, it just has lots of spoiled Bad Players who don't get it.

While these forums do contribute to the doom and gloom feeling, a fair amount of it is founded. For me, it's a combination of communication and development.

The lack of communication is appalling; there is no excuse for it. For EQ2, the entire SOE team is working toward the goal, with the president of the company releasing official information. Here, it's an off-handed comment by Tiggs or JustG--'oh by the way, JTL is live, I hope your speeder works, sorry if you live in Europe.' By choosing to stay autonomous, the SOE-Austin team has isolated itself and this game.

By paying $15/month, you should be getting a new game experience every 3-4 months based on current game costs. I've been playing since Beta 2, and I can't say that's the case. Sure, there have been some new developments, but how can you have professions that have been broken since launch (pistoleer, smuggler, ranger, etc) and removed content (battlefields, GCW outposts) and consider that a development success?

The potential was there to make this a great game, but I don't think that potential will ever be realized. JTL is more of the same--endless grind with little content and broken promises (no smuggling). The game isn't that bad, but honestly, it's not that good.
