let me just say a couple of things. i know you all have this GREAT idea of a smuggler having a melee attack.
this is one of the worst ideas i can think of
1st of all there are chances of the devs replacing one of our ranged moves for a melee move basically doing nothing but decreasing the range enourmously. a bunch to the throught a squuese to the balls, this all sounds cool but once u put it into perspective with other peoples characters it doesnt work out. For instance im going for part chef part smuggler master pistol and novice medic. there is no TKA in there. as a smuggler I try to stay away from things. melee isnt really a meathod u want to use when ur trying to get away. what do u see melee attackers do when they attack you. run after you and you run away. unless you want to run at him and risk your life dying which you most likely will since he has 50x the amount of melee modis as you do. u will be shreeded torn beaten spat at and grinded under his boot. lets take the most impossible situation i can think of where this could happen. Your in a cantina and a bh walks in after you. you sprint for the door and deliver him a throat punch ( or whatever ) to him. YOU ESCAPE.... NOT.
this melee attack that everyone wants for smuggler only works if that smuggler is part a melee profession.. WHICH NOT EVERYONE IS. you must look at this at a bigger scale and a more sensible one. if u were a dev would u add a move in which smugglers get destroyed every time the attempt to use it. once ur dead and on the ground and the melee attacker / bh is laughing unstopably u will be thinking.. damn I wish I used panic shot. or ... damn i wish i used leg shot, I could have gotten away!.... trust me on this. think about what your asking for.

I look at it this way. BH with pistols vs a smuggler with pistols = BH wins. I like the melee aspect to throw in a wrench to their plans. Its also tough to run from a bh that already has Exploration 4. He will catch up to you sooner or later. I think either way you got, pistols or melee, you will do just fine.

Now, I'm also a pistol-packing Smuggler (with TK as well, but that's not important right now), but what about those who want to be a jaw-breakin' Smuggler? They would want to replace all the pistol specials with melee specials. This sort of thing is dependant on what type of character you want to play. Better would be to not replace our pistol specials, but include additional melee specials to satisfy both sides.
Now, let's take another look at your scenario. Smuggler's sitting in the cantina, having a drink. Bounty hunter comes in and because the Smuggler's smart, he's in a nice shadowy corner with a good view of the doorway and sees the hunter first.
He tries to slip out of his booth unseen, but the hunter's got enhancements to his vision in that helmet of his and spots our hero. Knowing he can't take on the hunter and live (with his pistol or his fists), he steps up to the nearest sentient, yells something incoherent, and punches it in the face (or whatever), then throws it onto a table full of drinks surrounded by other sentients, who are now very upset. This begins a rip-roaring bar brawl, causing much confusion and blocking the hunter's way to the smuggler. Our friend waves jauntily at the hunter who is now fully engaged in the melee, and scrambles for the back door, escaping to smuggler another day.
Now, wouldn't you want melee skills to accomplish that?
(Yeah, yeah, totally NOT something possible in-game, but it was a cool story, right?
)

Yeah, but starting a bar fight really doesn't need a special, any putz with a fist and novice brawler could do that...

Great story, but why sould I spend 29 skill points just so I can punch something in the face? Anyone should be able to do that.

Now, now. He didn't just puch someone in the face.
First was the Warcry (Novice Brawler - the incoherent yelling).
Then the Unarmed Stun (Unarmed 2 - punch in the face).
Finally, the Spin Attack to aggro everything (Unarmed 4 - the throw).
Gotta have all the Smuggler Unarmed prereqs to pull that one off.

Who cares what you have.
Why not make the skills universal. They work with a pistol, or without. You telling me I can't low blow or last ditch without a pistol?

why wouldwe need explore 4? we are a hybrid proffestion, and explore 4 has nothing to do with it. i like the idea of unarmed attacks, and partly i think they put pistol 4 and unarmed to get smuggler, because in the movies Han Solo was a smuggler, and he used both. pistols more then unarmed, but he did attack that scout trooper when he broke that twig on endor......i think they won't need to take away any of r randged attacks, they can just give us 2 attacks per box (meele & randged). it's not like they give you MODs for randged so why not some meele when the lines of r pistol fire go down. just my thoughts (i like meele

I was just kidding sheesh. I see the unarmed prereq as a waste of skill points because I dont use anything from it and I dont like melee. People are getting a little tense in here.

I agree that we dont need Melee. The only reason its been suggested in the past has been because its part of our Pre-req's.
However, if you're just looking for some kind of "getaway move", then all they'd have to do is extend the length of stun time based on level dealt by panic shot. The recipient still gets up on the next attack, keeping griefing to a minimum.

lol thank you all very much for your replys.. we are starting to slowly get my point arent we. some kid said " im just not buying it ".. its plain facts he just doesnt want to face the truth. smuggler w/ a melee attack who is no other melee profeessionm will get owned if he uses that attack. think about it. we are not all brawlers. for those who are not brawlers a melee proffession does nothing but make us want to use it... ok. a punch to the throat.. sounds all bells and whistles but for people like me its a move that will get ourselves killed
another kid said.

you should be a writer kid. im serious you can type 5x better then i can but the thing is the odds of something like that hapening is slim to none like i said above. plus if the smugg has no melee profession to back him up at close range..... he will die. no questions asked.
