Well, yeah.. that would be the perfect solution...
But if they're going to make them component drops... then this post applies.

Make them drop from the "rival smugglers" we might have to kill on the missions, or the bounty hunters that come for us when we get too many deadbeat points.

Yeah, once again... good idea.
But it doesn't really help anything until we get the Smuggling part of the Revamp. That's what this thread is about.

Should be simple enough to code it so you need a lot of slicing skill to open them. Hey presto! Open only by Smugglers and also only Smugglers with Slicing IV or whatever.
Plus, they're not only in instant death dungeons, but plenty of other caves etc as well.

I'm still debating whether to start buying up people's stocks now... Don't want devs to change their minds and me be left with no cash and shedloads of junk.

What the hell you thinking? Particularly on the master smuggler front?
think about the lower end loot for example. The system we have now you have to slice an item each level up to the one you want. If that remains the case once the loot change hit that means two things (a) Master Smugglers doing the tier 4 slicing still need to have loot from meatlumps or whatevr to get there (b) NON-Master smugglers, depending on amount of Slicing training they have, will be capable of performing some of the lower level loot based slicing.
So hows your wonderful plan going to work?
Make it so not only do Master Smugglers have to spend a day a week killing CL15s or something to get thier business done, but they're also going to have to do the looting *for* other people?
The way I see it, as long as all levels of parts are useful, and there is a good balance of drop rates among the levels and types of slices it'll be fine and they'll be available either for you to loot yourself or to find a supplier (verndor, guild, friends, whatever) depending on your playstyle.

It's good to see other opinions on something. It makes me think about things I might have missed.
I suppose I should have specified that I meant *high end* components.

I'm not real crazy about this idea, but for another reason:
Name one loot item in the game that currently drops for a specific profession? Crystals/Pearls? Usable only by jedi but I've collected more than a few. Krayt tissues/scales? I have no use for them, but I can sell them to WS/AS.
I understand why you're upset by this, but I've seen it addressed repeatedly in GM's thread and in Wes': slicing (not just the lowest level) should be possible without loot items, but the best slices require the drops. Until we get smuggler missions, I think this is the best compromise.
I think one of the goals here is to prevent everyone and their cousin from all having the "best slice". "Best slice" should be rare and that is a good thing.
