I have recently become a Smuggler (3444 atm) and was hoping to have great fun in the profession and earn a bit of money outside the killing Janta's crap.

I am totally anti-grinding and like to do a bit of role play. However since I have come to this board I notice people are totally fed up with being a smuggler. I have committed myself to this profession for the forseeable future. Please can someone give me something to be glad about outside of the giigle for a smuggler thread?

If nothing else, Smuggler is deffinately good for roleplay.

I'm a roleplayer too, and I get the strangest looks in the game when I type out my own responses to NPC conversations.

Note: I don't type what the devs would have us all say, I type out what I would say in that situation, then hit the selection on the radial. Except when selling faction, when it gets to be more of a chore than fun.

Smuggler is great fun. I've been smuggling (more or less) for about 8 months now and still doing it, and more than that: profitting from it. Sure, I'm not earning 50 mil a day from grinding whatever on whichever planet, but that's ok. I don't like grinds, like to roleplay, and just do my job.

One thing that has helped me make a few million over the months is Reputation. This takes time and good customer service, plus a host of other personality things that ensure that you have customers coming to see you specifically for their slicing - despite it all being random. Over the months I've built up a large exclusive customer base. One thing you can also do is to build up a contract or two with weapon/armoursmiths to do bulk slicing for them. Sure it's depressively boring and time consuming but it's a lot of cash for not much work

This doesn't just go for slicing, either. Selling faction points and perks, and even the odd pizza delivery to a poor grinding Jedi, hiding out in some tiny corner of Dathomir

To me, being a successful smuggler is all about sound business decisions.

Well, I'll say this, I make close to 95% of my money from slicing and I just recently hit 3.5 million credits. I know there are a lot of crafters out there with a lot more, but to me, that's a pretty impressive bit of cash. I've got a pretty long list of regulars that come to me only for their slicing needs. Considering how little player interaction there seems to be, what with the AFK Buff bots and everyone doing solo missions, I think it's a nice change of pace to actually talk to people.

I also love the roleplaying potential that Smuggler has, which is probably in the top 3 for best profession for roleplaying (Bounty Hunter and Jedi I think are good ones too, but there are too many "Uber-L337 Power Gamers" that are Jedi). I've been trying to roleplay more and more, but most of the time I just get funny looks

Another thing to be kind of happy about....

This is from the in concept part of the dev site. For Publish 11 (Jan-March 05).

Please keep this thread positive and not start talking about broken promises.

Smuggler Revamp
There has been much anticipation for the Smuggler Revamp indeed. There is a strong desire to add types of smuggling for smugglers to engage in, enhance slicing and make a dirty in-fighting, street-style of combat a viable technique for smugglers to make a move and then escape from superior forces (which is not necessarily dirty-infighting as it currently exists). The revamp is in its early stages, but we will post progress on the Smuggler Revamp on our boards as soon as it is available.

I personally have never been into RP but I will say that Smuggler is one profession where youravatar takes on a certain gloss;a cloak of actual character that many other professions lack. AsI walk around ,I can't help but feel immensely proud of being, in essence, ascoundrel.

Of course the actual reality of being aSmuggler in the game has issues, but this profession remains the only one for me. It's very social, and the more you immerse yourself into the commercial aspects of the galaxy, the more rogueish you feel. A Guildmate needs X, I'll use my contacts to get a deal fixed up (for a cut, of course). Player Y's spamming for item Z, I'll sniff out a way get a piece of the pie. And I get this from the game without going into RP, it just sort of happened. One day I was a nice, normal guy working towards a Profession, the next I was wheeler-dealing like a pro, with little black book (/not) full of 100 names and contacts.

Smuggler is the coolest profession in the game. The Bounty Hunters may argue, as might the Jedi. But who, in the movies, ended up a hero with a beautifulwoman on his arm, I ask you? Certainly not Boba Fett or Luke. Case closed.

There are many positive aspects of Smuggler...unfortunately for you, your coming into the forums at a time when most of the community is weary of fighting the fight. Overall, if you poke around the other prof forums you'll find that this community is one of the best, most supportive, most friendly, and all around well characterized roup of people around.

Peopl have alreadt touched upon the great roleplaying aspects of this profession. It cannot be stated enough. There are few exceptions to the fact that this profession right from Novice gives you a sense of being outside the norm of society. It is a mindset that comes with the title, theres no other way to slice it (no pun intended). Nearly every 'hologrinder' I have ever talked to has always remembered doing Smuggler the most, and not because it was difficult or cumbersome, but because they found their playstyle changed a bit just from donning the title of Smuggler. In this vein I encourage you to create your own content, get into the role, and you will find others will follow suit...even if it just when they interact with you.

As far as the game aspects themselves I still think we are topnotch. You juts have to lower your expectations of what you think a Smuggler should be. Keep in mind that we are a hybrid profession. We have good combat skills, but not the mods to support them. We have some crafting ability, but not the economy to support it. We have 2 unique skill trees that really define the profession and give us our livelihood: Faction purchasing and Slicing. These too could be improved, and we will see that come eventually.

We have the best damage output special in the game with Last Ditch, as well as the only ranged knockdown in LowBlow. Our ranged delay used to be really good, now it is mediocre at best...and Feign Death always comes in handy....even if the re-aggro is still an issue.

Spices can still be useful, but more in an emergency situation then anything. This is the area we will see the most dramatic improvement in the revamp. Just look at what they did for chef for proof.

Underworld skills are beneficial in PvP, otherwise they are good to get your own faction perks as well as selling faction to other players at a hearty profit. And don't forget avoiding the contraband scanners....usually handy, even if the penalties are light right now.

Slicing is the bread and butter, and if you only use it to improve your own weapons/armor...it's still worth it. I myself like to be in control of my own equipment, and never buy pre-sliced. I always feel I can do a better job then most, and I think a lot of the Smugglers around here feel the same. If you can hook up with a weaponsmith or armorsmith and contract out for slicing, it can be a nice source of income to be sure.

The master box should see tons of improvement as well, so hold tight for those.

Overall we are a unique profession that works well with most other professions whether they be combatorcrafting. The trick is to find the combination that works best for you and your playstyle...or how you want to roleplay your Smuggler.

The revamp will bring us much, but again we are pretty good even without it. Most of the discontent you see herein the forums is bred by the mass amount of potential available to us, and the desire of this passionate community to see that potential reached.

Stick with it, you will love it...once you goblack(market) you never go back!

Besides....it can't rain all the time.

Simply I love being a Smuggler. It defines what my toon is ingame. I love slicing, the hoping thatI get a good slice for my customer, the hoping for the perfect slice. Walking past aST and getting scaned and passing ( i'm a rebal atm and hate failing a scan cause theres much bloodshed, normaly mine)I have a weaponsmith that i slice for for stedy income and i'm looking for a armorsmith to slice for,but most of my money comes from the random slice. Yes we could be better, but till then I will have fun being who I am. A Master Smuggler
