Thread: So, to fix slicing exploits, what would you suggest?

This recent interest in how to not only do slicing exploits, but justify them, hasled me to wonder how you would prefer we fix them from happening.

We know that powerups are removed as we slice each wire, but this obviously hasn't solved the problem.

Here were some options from my perspective. Working within the system we have now, rather than pushing for a revamped slicing system that we will hopefully have eventually.

  1. Have the slicing window turned into one that you either 'do or do not'. You don't work on thirty different things while slicing open a grenade and work from a fixed window that does not allow you to move stuff around in.

    • Concerns:

      • Laser knife charges would need to have a system check at the same time the system checks for an upgrade kit, to insure that the slicer has enough to finish a complete slice.

  2. Have the check for a powerup occur before the % of the increase is calculated. If detected, return to the window while having the powerup removed.

    • Or if detected after a wire is cut, have the slice fail. (Stick it to them for tampering with the system too much, so to speak)

  3. Ask for power-ups to not increase the base weapon stats. In short, alter them so that when the weapon is sliced, it won't see the increased stats.

    • Concerns:

      • This is asking for a pretty large overhaul of the database most likely in how they put powerup stats on weapons.

So what would you prefer? 1? 2? Both? Some other solution that I can't think of at the moment?

Personally I would like both included at the moment, but maybe I'm not seeing all the problems with such actions.

I'm just editting on the fly as I continue to think on the subject.

I would say both butin addition maybelet amaster smugglers use power up slices (Ive never done it and in no way an i trying to justify it, an exploit is and exploit).

What we do is illegal anyway and it would be a cool thing for a master to be able to do this for an even better slice. But with that said it would be for a master only and the dev's would have to ok it.

Not sure I like #1. Too many things go on while one is slicing, and there is the real problem of this causing further buggy problems if you're in a bad lag or even get dropped in the middle.

#2 is ok, but I'd rather just see the system check for a powerup after the slice is done but before the slice result is applied, remove it if it's there, then apply the slice result. They just put the check/removal of the powerup in the wrong place.

EDIT: By the way, if they fix this relatively minor issue before giving us something positive for the profession, that's just sad...

I sometimes need to have my inventory window and vendor windows open while im slicing to allow for sorting. I don't think this is a viable solution.

Devs just need to come up with a way to stop powerups for going on to a wep during slicing.

I vote for number 2

seems simple enough... just have the follwing logic added:

When calculating slice percentage:

if weapon has a powerup then percentage = 0

else -> normal slice percentage generation

Possibly, checking for a PUP at every stage and removing them, secondly possibly storing the original stats of the weapon and verifying against them on the last cut and when calculating the slice?

We could have a fixed or "modal" window if upgrade kit, knives and clamps were checked for before hand, or possibly change the process to one interface rather than successive windows would be nice.

Tough call though either way.

Just move the pup check to AFTER the 2nd wire is cut.

Clean and simple solution...

Though, having the slice fail if a pup is applied during the slice would be just as effective...

I like number 2, but with a small change. If the system detects the powerup, at any time during the slice, the system gives you a yes/no message that says if you continue slicing the process:

1. Will remove the powerup.

2. Destroy said powerup.

3.and then allow the weapon to be sliced.

This would give the smuggler the opportunity to let the customer know that if he continues he will lose the p-up and have to put another one on, or wait for the powerup to wear off to slice it. IMO that would end the problem at that point. Just my 2 cents.

The reason I like #1 is actually to prevent some other exploits from the past without a doubt. Many would 'refresh' their inventory to insure they could pull off some exploits with slicing. It would also have prevented the trade-ring exploits as well... things like that.

I'll take what I can get if this gets addressed by the devs before anything else. It is addressing exploits to the system after all... maybe it will get some notice.

Side with you Caylin, number 1 is probably best short term, but then a redesign of the process making it fun and foolproof would be nice

As for getting the devs attention... I got to admire yourtenacity

I don't like the "blocking" UI idea at all

What happens if you get a tell in the middle of #1? Can you still chat while mid slice? If you can chat what's preventing you from typing out actions/macros? Does this mean I can't do a /dance when i pick the proper wire on a locked container without clamps (I'd have to wait till i cut the 2nd)?

How invasive would the window be? Could you still examine other inventory items? Could you even see the other things on your screen? Sometimes its nice to make sure you're slicing the right item before you pull the trigger or in the case of locked containers double check that you have the room in your inventory.

What happens if you get attacked while in the middle of #1? Can the window close mid-slice without ruining the weapon?

Would this change mean there would have to be multiple different slicing interfaces that the devs would have to maintain or would things like mission term slicing or base terminal slicing also have this invasive "can't do anything else" interfaces?

I wouldn't mind if they blackened out the screen until the slicing is done (like the darkening between crafting windows). There just needs to be a way to make sure enough tools are available to finish the job; otherwise, forgeting your out of clamps while slicing a krayt enhanced gun would hurt.

edit: to clarify this means I support the #1 option. slicing only takes a few seconds.
