Thread: What do we want from smuggler missions
Message Edited by Nezodon on 06-17-2005 01:17 PM
Could be across planets or through space, docking with ships/spacestations.
Could be going to mission generated building A slice terminal to get result X.
Could be factional, rebels need supplies get them thru imp blockade and patrols, imperials need information on rebels slice terminal to locate rebel agent X.
- You go to NPC mission giver (located in cantina- most likely bartender- or starport for space missions).
- He offers you a mission- you get the option to take it or ask for something a little riskier(low andhigh end missions)
- He tells you of a person needing something smuggled and gives waypoint.
- You go to WP where mission giver gives you the goods- an advance- and tells you how long you have to deliver.
- As you make your way to the point you are:
- Attacked by other thugs who want the stuff.
- Offered bribes by those who want the stuff.
- Dropped in on by security types who are following the stuff.
- Scanned more often with the stuff.
- Space Pirates who want to jack the stuff.

I want player smuggling
NPC smuggling misisons, while a massive step in the right direction, will become as passe and uninteresting as the vast majority of PvE stuff in the game.
As the goal of actual smuggling comes closer and closer, let's not fail ourselves by aiming too low. Let's press for real smuggling - player smuggling.
How should player smuggling work?

Oh man, you had to ask, didn't you...I've lost count of how many times I seme ot have written this same old mantra heh
Basically
- Spice is mined in space
- Smugglers have an 'Available for Work' list, similar mechanism for BH terms, displaying the Smugglers available for hire
- Starports are patrolled by factional troops
- These troops scan for spice, factional equipment, faction rank and Jedi
- Smugglers can avoid scans, through one of various mechanisms - either simple scan evasion roll, use of different starports [my option of choice] etc
- Therefore
- Smugglerscarry goods and peopel onto factionally controlled planets
- Where contraband is limited to spice, faction equipment [like bases, furniture] and Jedi/high ranking officers, the inconvenience of starport scansisn't applied to your average Joe player, it's only the factionally minded [ie the active soldiers] who suffer the inconvenience, which adds value/penalty to being a Colonel or a Jedi, which is a good thing, imo
- The GCW gets a boost by way of incentive to fight
My choice for the smuggling mechanic at the moment is use of Smuggler-only Starports. Imagine us having access to Outpost Starports, which do not have shuttle facilities. So we land in the arse-end of nowhere, meaning our cargo can be intercepted. Hell, the outpost might even be staked out, and we're able to walk into an ambush. Link that to a Prestige system, which governs our price, our reliability and our success rate on the Available for Hire terminal, and also to our Visibiilty rating, and you have a system that could be amazing.
I see a situaiton where I can sit in a Cantina, tell the terminal or NPC that I'm available for work, and have a space miner come in, read the terminal andcontact me thorugh the Terminal/NPC mechanismthat they need transport to Naboo, but he can't get there as Naboo is Imperially held, and he's scared about having his spice confiscated [or degraded by death]. We agree the contract, we group up andwe hit space [the onyl way to access the Smuggler outpost starports is via space]. So I head over to Naboo, fly past the capitol ship that indicates Naboo is Imperially blockaded, play a little mini-game ala the Lambda Shuttle Tyderium* security'moment' in ROTJ whereby I have to trick [trick, not roll] my way through the blockade and am then free to land at the Naboo Pirate station, which is 15k from the nearest settlement.
Depending on how my security clearance trick went and my Prestige, I might be ambushed in space or on landing, or, I might land and bid my passengers a farewell, and wish them godspeed as they disappear into the Naboo night.
Then, as I turn to head back to my YT, the obattlescarred La Serafina, I hear the familiar laugh of OMGPWNERIZE-JOO, the notorius Bounty Hunter. He's tracked me all this way and I owe someone soem serious money.
Now that, my friend, is how to do smuggling.
* props to Angus heh
