Thread: Something I have noticed

On my server Sunrunner, I have noticed a thing that goes on with long time master smugglers that drop the profession. Around 2-3 months after totally dropping it they usually do one of 2 things. They pick it back up, or they quit the game. Even those that quit for longer than 2-3 months often include 'former master smuggler' in either their bio or forum sig. I just don't see this happening among other professions (at least in the group of people I know). What makes us love this broken profession so much that it becomes our CENTRAL identity. I can't explain what it is for me. I'm a smuggler, it's all I know. I can't fathom my character being centerd around another profession.

I bought this game to be a Smuggler, I'll finish the game as a Smuggler. And I'll never drop it. I hope to be Smuggler for SWG2 (if/when that ever happens) when they finally let us smuggle.

Many times I've been asked what I'm going to do next, as in when I'm dropping smuggler to try another prof. Some people just don't understand when I tell them I'll never stop being Smuggler.

I agree ... Without meaning to offend any of the other professions, because I've tried most of them out, it just seems that smuggler has the greatest potential. Bounty Hunter, which I tried as well, pretty much is what it is: You hunt to exterminate. And to that end, you're mostly concerned with a system that allows you to do this. The gripes on those boards -- dating back to launch in '03 are largely about that. Smuggler, meanwhile, is a bit more nuanced. And even though we have a shell of a profession, it's a darn good one, which, if developed to its potential could be tremendously cool.

Being a Sunrunnerian I've seen what you see... First person to come to mind of our dearly departed: Xadius.

I know what you guys mean. I've seen a few quit the game. I know at least one person who I personally trained up to Master Smuggler(as opposed to me, I was never trained in Smuggler skills by another player) who has dropped it due to its broken state. Hopefully, we can get Smuggler fixed soon.

I bought 2 more accounts since I wanted to try other professions but I didnt want to drop smuggler/pistoleer. I am a smuggler by choice and only a pistoleer by necessity.

We may complain about the lack of actual smuggling but overall smuggler and the people who actually choose to be smuggler on there toon have a lot of fun and are usually cool people.

It is not true for everyone though. I have noticed that some people who step back from the profession end up quiting a few months if not weeks later. I know that we have lost a few great crafters this way on kettemoor. They say they are taking a 2 month break only to have a post about them leaving a month later.

I came very very close to dropping smuggler. Was down to 4000 for about a week so I could get a better PvP and higher PvE template. What was a I thinking?

The 'trick' is to only drop to 0110 when you drop it... So when you change your mind 2 months later you don't have to go through slicing hell with all those containers =)

And yes, I speak from experience.

It seems to fit my experience too - I dropped the spices line (from master smuggler) to try a holo profession, and went straight back a few days later. Some months later, I dropped most of the profession, right down to just dirty fighting 4, to do master tailor, and went back again after a month or two. It didn't feel right to not be a smuggler anymore, and I found myself calling myself an ex-smuggler a lot, just as you said.

I think its a question of content mostly. Hope dosent make a game fun. If you wait month after month after month. For a profession to become fun you got some problems. Thats a retarded exercise. You might aswell stick your finger into an electrical socket. Alot of people get so caught up in the roleplay that they miss the fact that the profession they are playing is not fun. If your into sliceing stuff and playing dead your really into smuggler.

If your into killing lots of cool things smuggler is not for you.

If your into pvp smuggler is not for you.

If your into crafting smuggler is not for you.

I think its that alot of people just figure out hey this is dumb and pointless. Playing a profession for what it could be. Rather then faceing what it is now. Infact many smugglers wear the smuggler since day 1 patch way too proudly. Its not a badge of honor, or committment. Its a badge of look at me I refuse to come to terms with reality.

I could see it if smuggler had some truely innovateive combat, or crafting system. It dosent though. Its the profession of how to slice weapons and armor. So I do not feal bad for when someone leaves smuggler. I clap for them they are just slightly less demented then the fanboys, and know they want to go have fun. Rather then wait around for smuggler to get the serious work it needs.
