I’m guessing that somewhere in the past someone has asked why unarmed 4 is needed for smuggler, but I’m new here so humour me. I can understand pistol, after all it’s a rough galaxy and there is precedent in the films. However I cant see the reasoning behind unarmed. If its a matter of balance then wouldn’t business 4 from artisan make more sense? A smuggler is still a merchant after all just one that deals in "specialised" goods. If someone can answer the rational behind this Id be grateful.

Yup.

Pistols IV, Business IV, Unarmed IV, and I think there was actually something else.... and it even was printed like that in the manual that shipped with the first release version.
I remember that being pointed out to me, and complaining about how it took 4 trees AND three different novice boxes, making it a ridiculously high amount of skill points to invest.
(This I think was another "Why Smuggler sucks worse than Ranger" conversation with a Master Ranger friend of mine.)

Requirements: Pistol IV, Business IV, Unarmed IV & Engineering IV

That's what it used to be, in beta.

I'm glad it's this way instead of another combination though and find it to fit more closely than the others. Some don't agree but that is their problem

Ahh... that's what it was. Honestly, even though we don't gain anything from our Unarmed IV roots, it does make sense that the hooligan, the ruffian, the slightly outside the law smuggler type would have their street smarts about them... and we saw Han punch stuff more than once.

Yeah, we used to have Engineering IV too, it was quite ridiculous. Made it tough to choose whether you wanted to be a crafting smuggler or a combat smuggler.

In the end the reason they kept only Unarmed and not the other three (besides pistols) I think is to fit the mold of the "barfighter" You know, having to be able to take care of yourself in any situation, even ones where you have no weapons. It fits better with the concept of a 'brawler" I think then the actual Brawler profession. To me a brawler has little finesse other then to skillfully bash and thrash there way through a fight. The drunken barfight comes to mind. Since smugglers should be spending a lot of time in cantinas (movies and EU talking here, not SWG) this makes perfect sense.

Others don't agree, but they are entitled to their opinion.

The problem with having both required for most of us is that only one of the two is used. The other is just wasted skill points.

Being Master Pistoleer I sure don't drop my pistol to punch something with my Unarmed 4.

Now some of us are TKM as well as Master Pistoleer and I guess that at times it makes sense to drop a pistol to slug it out. *shrugs*

I don't much like having wasted skill points but it is WAY better than when we had Eng 4 and Business 4 as well.

Although I myself have business 4, I feel its would be a complete waste to havefor many smugglers. As I've said before, Underworld should be our business line.

It's a shame it forces you to unarmed / pistols, I'd rather have different combat skills. But then I dropped all my combat skills and took up merchant anyways... might change with combat upgrade.

A better choice would be brawler 0400 so you could grind up fencer 4000 instead, giving the Smuggler decent resists. Being good with a knife or a blaster makes sense to me as a smuggler. But then brawling does as well.

Or they could just give the same resists that fencer 4000 has to the smuggler, then that would be a good bonus to train.
