Thread: Concerns about slicing.

Weapon & Armor breakage has been removed.

Removed for three reasons: 1) It was difficult to understand the
breakage system. 2) It happened too often. Although it could be slowed,
3) it just wasn't fun anyway.

I've adjusted weapon slice bonuses and costs across the board.

Adding a crit chance should now be more of a worthwhile gamble.
Certain combinations of slices are no longer patently better than
others. Different types of slices should be more competitive. However,
the numbers are still subject to change.

Some slices will now require components to apply.

Slices are unlimited item upgrades. I don't believe they should be
free. The breakage system was too harsh a penalty. Instead, I'm
enabling plan B. There are 9 components used by the current set of
slices. Components cover a range in rarity and the difficulty of
location in which they drop. For example, rebuilding the firing pin
(level 4 fire rate) or applying a feather trigger pull (level 3 crit
chance) now requires a Delicate Trigger Assembly, which drops in Death
Watch Bunker and Avatar Platform. We may have to tweak the drop rate a
few times to get it right.

This stuff should go to Test Center in a day or two.

Waitaminute.... maybe I'm not reading this right....

We're going to need high-level drops to do decent slicing now?

Umm... not sure I like this. I mean, it usually takes a big group to survive in the DWB... how are we supposed to get these drops? Please don't tell me I'm going to be forced to group just to get slicing compnents. Last time I tried to get a DWB group together, it took hours.

Please tell me I am misunderstanding this.

when will these tweaks be seen on TC (particularly the numbers changes)?

Will these additional components also include the current range of Smuggler tools? (Say for Level 1 and 2 slices)

Let the smugglers break apart these items, and get components from them. "Junk", old weapons, CDEF pistols, crappy armor, crates of Artisan Knives.

This will keep the demand infor Armorsmith / Weaponsmith / Artisans and the regular joe's who find looted "junk" items.

Just and idea... what do you other smugglers think?

Kinda like Shipwrights and RE'ing their space loot to find Firespray schematic disks!

Plus, this does kinda fit a smuggler/tinkering type of image.

Look, here's another point I'd like to bring up. This isn't at all a risk/reward type of thing. This is a work/reward type of thing. This is the kind of thinking that jedis go by. "Well, if I work for days on end doing mindless grinding, I should be able to kick everyones@sses!" This type of system would either screw up caps, creating unbalance or not be worth it at all. I'm usualy possitive about changes and I don't like to be pescimistic, but I cannot agree with this at all.

Yeah, now I like that immersion, but 3 hours is a bit much! Sometimes thats all I have in a day to play. :-)

Exactly. If you had to waste 2 days sitting in a cell (timer would pause if you logged), you'd either not do whatever it was you did the first time, make sure you didn't get caught, or make sure you can escape. I would hope you Smugglers would sit in the #2 option

I would rather start with the components being hard to get and loosen it up to make it easier, then have them be too common and have to nerf them. If this goes out and they are too rare and it sucks, we'll loosen it up.

If I make Crit Chance 3 give you 10% chance to crit, that's _nice_. You should have to work to get that. You should feel you've earned it.

Smugglers: You don't have to farm these components to slice. Charge more if you do, but charge less if the person you're slicing for supplies the component.

I've already said my piece on how the proposed Plan B will affect my game play. Now, I'd like to offer my opinion on how it will affect the game overall:

Plan B will create a large unbalance in-game. Economically, you are re-introducing the idea of super high-demand/low availability items. Prices for the components will go through the roof. As a result, Slicing prices for Master level slices will skyrocket from several thousand credits up to several MILLION credits. Only the uber-players will be able to affordto purchase high-quality weapons (from weaponsmiths) and have them sliced by a Master Smugler. Master-sliced weapons will become like the legendary pre-CU uber-weapons. Only the wealthy will be able to afford them, which means the wealthy will be able to out-damage virtually anyone else. Suddenly, we have a new class of uber-combatants. Essentially Plan B ends up giving back all the same out-of-balance advantages that SOE has been working so hard to fix.

Furthermore, when the time comes to decrease the rarity of the components there will be a huge cry from the wealthy Smugglers (who suddenly see a substantial drop in their income) and Combatants(who are suddenly faced with the idea that their high-dollar weapons are suddenly worth much less than they spent on them).

I know your intentions are good, but starting out rare will cause more problems in the long run and create more discord within the community.

Small suggestions to avoid some of the insanity we'll face every time we slice:

1) slice components = great! Loot-only = boo! Sure, I love the idea of holding out for loot-drop componentry. My Exceptionaly Krayted DE-10 is evidence of that. But even the Weaponsmiths had craftable non-loot versions! Give us crafted component versions of these loot-drops, but allow a bonus to be obtained when using the loot. I can get a passable FWG-5 without blowing the bank... or I can drop a few mill on a Gorax-enhanced one. -or- I can get a fantastic WS with good resources to make a middle-of-the-road version, or even use lower-end loot components for a slight bonus. Give our client base these same options.

2) Keep the loot coming from a very wide variety of MOBs. Otherwise, we'll see singular guilds camping Nyax again, 24/7. An alternate would be to *additionally* offer missions/quests that are smuggler specific to get a shot at obtaining one of these parts. (later work them in as smuggling-mission reward, perhaps???). Anything from keeping this loot type from becoming the sole domain of camping Jedi, like +25 SEAs have become.

Concerns people are showing (or that i'm having as I sit on all this):

- Drop rates, drop stack sizes, locations, etc.

- Stats of tiered slices, both customization % as well as % stat change

- Usefulness of top tier slices
* Interaction with weapon caps
* Value of combinations of lower tier mods

- Resulting *junk* in the system (either by too common drops or stat mods people deem not worth applying

- Uniformity (or lack there of) of armor in a loot driven slice world (enough components for a suit? no? cost of a sliced suit?

- worth of loot or time to slice low end / new player gear?

- storage issues for slicing smugglers? Are we going to have to have houses full of all the components to work the different tiers?
