Well, I posted this on my server boards, and aside from a snide comment about possible cheating, no one seemed to care... so I give it now to you, my Smuggler brethren. Heck, we're the scummy type that likes sabacc anyway.
Materials needed:
- 16 "cards" (e.g. armor segments) labeled from -7 to +8 including 0
- a 12-sided die
- four satchels or cargo pockets labeled "hand 1" "hand 2" etc.
- a backpack to carry it all in.
This will make a deck for up to four players plus a dealer. Combine multiple decks for larger games.
Object of the game: to get as close to 23 or -23 without going over (or under for the negatives).
Directions:
- Each player tips the dealer the agreed upon "ante." E.g. if the ante is 1000cr, each player tips the dealer 1000cr, making the starting pot 4000cr in a four-player game.
- Four cards are randomly put into each satchel. The players are each given a satchel by the dealer. Now each player should have four cards in his hand. Adding up the cards gives you your current "total." Players keep their total secret from each other.
- The dealer rolls the 12-sided die. The resulting number is added to each player's "total." If the die rolls 10, 11, or 12, subtract from the total instead.
- The players bet in turn as you would in poker. The maximum bet is equal to the current total in the pot. E.g. if the pot is currently 4000cr, the maximum any player can put in the pot is 4000cr this roll. Tip the dealer the appropriate amount as he keeps the potuntil the end.
- After all players have bet, the dealer rolls again, and play continues in turn.
- The dealer keeps track of the total that the rolls have come to. E.g. if the first roll was a 4, and the second roll was a 7, the dealer would announce the the roll total is 11 (4+7). If the third roll is 12, the dealer would now announce that the roll total is -1 (11-12).
- The dealer announces the pot total at the beginning of each roll.
- If the roll is a multiple of 4 (i.e. 4, 8, 12) the players must pass two cards to their left after betting. This simulates the "shift" possiblity in standard sabacc. The dealer must announce that "shifting occurs" before the betting.
- After four rolls, the players may "call" on their turn. Final bets are placed and the players reveal their totals (added to the roll total, of course). Note: players may call at any roll after the fourth, but they may not call before the fourth.
- The winner is the player closest to 23 or -23 without going over (busting). E.g. -25 is an automatic loss as is 30. -20 beats 19 because -20 is closer to -23 than 19 is to 23. The winner gets the pot.
Special Rules:
- In a tie, the positive number wins. 23, a "pure sabacc" beats -23.
- A player holding the cards 0, 2, and 3 automatically wins. This is known as a "literal sabacc" or "idiot's array"
- Players may show their cards to each other in a trade window to prove their hands after someone has called. If a player is asked to prove his hand, he must show it to players who have not folded. A player who has folded does not have to reveal his hand. Players are not required to show their hand to players who have folded.
- It is customary for the player who has "called" to announce (or show in trade window) his hand first, followed by the player to his right and so on.
- It is customary for the dealer to keep 5% of the pot since the deck is usually his and he doesn't get to play.
- At any time a player may "fold" at any time and cut his losses.
- After each hand, the dealer is given all the satchels and re-distributes them for the next hand. Since shifting likely has occured, the hands are different than they were at the beginning of the previous hand.

nice!
One suggestion (to help avoid cheating) ...
Have the dealer place the cards in the same type of bags with the same name on a vendor ... priced at the ante.
Players buy into the game by purchasing their hand from the vendor.
(this way the dealer can't favor one person).
(Bets can still be tip'd to the dealer)

We play using a ten sided dice each with the dealer using a blue/red chance cube.
Everyone is grouped so you can see what everyone rolls.
Everyone rolls their dice 4 times and writes down the numbers (if playing with untrusted peeps the dealer keeps track for everyone)
The dealer than rolls the chance cube four times. Blue is + Red is - The order in which the blues and reds are rolled corispond to the four times the dice was rolled.
For example:
I roll my dice four times and get 10 4 7 3
The dealer rolls the chance cube four times and gets red blue blue red
So I then have -10 4 7 -3 which adds out to -2 (not a good hand for me
)
Then each person tells the dealer which "cards they are getting rid of" so I /tell dealer the 4 and the 7
Dealer says "Oakai is taking two, So-and-so is taking three...etc etc)
Everyone rolls their dice (two times in my case) and then the chance cube is rolled for + and -. So I roll 6 4 and then the dealer rolls red red blue red
That gives me -10 -3 -6 -4 which gives me -23! WOOT!
We play this way simply because it's less bulky and easier to manage

I can dig that. One thing I was going to do to make the hands more random is number the satchels 1-4 and have the players roll to see which ones they get.

Ah, but since everyone sees what everyone has each time, the fine art of bluffing is passed over... that's my favorite part!

Except only the dealer and you knows which cards you got rid of, which allows for some fun bluffing...trust me

Oryou could simply group individually with the dealer to get your "cards" (4 10 sided rolls and 4 chance cube rolls). This way its only the player and the dealer who knows what you have. Dealer writes these down. You have 4rounds. Each round you can only get rid of one card unless you have a 10 card which will allow you up to 4 new cards. Each round a bet is made. After the 4th round and the final bet the player to the dealers left can call out his total and its continues around the table. The dealer will verify the winner seeng he already knows anyway.
I'll have my own version as soon as i get time from work!!
