Gordan Walton's follow-up included this bit of information:
"Smuggler revamp / non-combat profession upgrades
The smuggler revamp is important and detailed design work starts on it and several other of the non-combat professions in January. We need the context of the Combat Upgrade to be finished though before revamping the non-combat professions completely. This doesn't mean we are not going to address critical bugs and issues with professions, see the next item…."

I'm kind of mixed up. Does this mean the new group of Developers are going to be tasked with the long standing Smuggler Revamp and the other non-combat professions?
I'm completely in agreement that the Combat Upgrade needs to be nailed down before our stuff is done since you can't fix or add something to the "house" when it has an incredibly shotty "foundantion". But this "detailed design work" worries me. Everytime I've heard the word "detailed" used to describe something, it means getting the little stuff after they've already got the big stuff. And it's already January...
Someone straiten me out or discuss this. I view this as an important note regarding us.

Basically, what it sounds like to me, is they're saying "we'll do it when we get around to it". I doubt they'll even touch the Smuggler revamp until well after the CU is done and all other professions are revamped.

yup. lets see if this promise for detailed information/work actually has some follow thorugh this time however.
Sadly he also said:
Underworld
Adding to the underworld is not part of our near term plans, and probably is a candidate for a future expansion given it's scope. Sorry!

Heh, why even bother with Smuggler then? Jeez, Underworld should really be one of our main branches. We should be using those skills (and many new skills put into that tree) to help us haggle, smuggle, persuade, ect. Jeez, they better not be just adding a few new combat skills and a new spice... I'm gonna be pissed.

I don't think he meant the actual Underworld line though. I think he means expanding the scope of the criminal side of Star Wars.
Disappointing...I was looking forward to joining a "new" faction soon
I'm so tired of just roleplaying a Smuggler for Jabba the Hutt.

If they are working on expanding the overall criminal world in SWG, they have my vote.
I suggest criminal factions for players with criminal affiliated player cities who enjoy random spawns of NPC thugs of that faction. Increase both the physical power, number, attitude, and contraband scans for all authorities in major cities to the point that non-smugglers will strongly not want to carry spice/slice. This will give smugglers a job. Increase the frequency and depth that players must interact with "criminals".
Furthermore, put NPC thugsat random waypoints in cities and have them and the big crime bosses give missions much like Grand Theft Auto. You could slice into a bank or spice/weapon depot, steal an authority's car in order to smuggle spice in it past a blockade in a starport, kill a rival crime faction member or authority who stands to stamp out your smuggling business, or just randomly slice bank terminals or speeders to start a chase scene!!!! Oh, yea... maybe just regular smuggling missions also - take package A to point B and beat up all the thugs you C on the way!!!

It's Gordon Walton's follow up to his post about all the new Developers they hired. There were a few other things that were mentioned besides Smugglers and the other non-combat professions and their revamps. Nothing to do with the GamePro article but it is new.
It's on the Dev tracker or just Click Here.

Ahhh, many thanks my friend.
It stands to reason that with 20 new dev's and bad press they will be trying to get the CU done a fast as they can. It makes sense to me that they have everything on hold until combat is right but with that said making us all wait up to 6 months to get it right is way wrong. Who knows for sure I guess we will have to wait and see. They can only put EVERYTHING other then the CU off for just so long before they crash and burn and I think they are starting to figure that out.

To me it sounds as if they are going to wait till the CU goes to beta for the stress test then get the new devs started on the revamps.
It will be easier to revamp that way...

If we look closely at the forums you will see the smuggler re-vamp back and to the left, back and to the left, back and to the left, back and to the left.

What this probably means is that the GreenMarine stuff and the reams upon reams of (virtual) pages regarding Smuggler concepts is all out the window. Starting with the CU in place we'll start over from scratch and figure out what we need.
Hopefully with the CU our combat-effectiveness (or lack thereof) will be totally turned on its ear, so starting over makes some sense. Unfortunately, it looks likeallof our previousbrainstorming and conceptualizing was wasted effort.
