Thread: Asteriod Resources

asteroid resources imo are what holding alot of shipwrights back. i hear rates of 100 cpu for asteroid resources, and considering it takes at least 1000 of any kind of asteroid resource and often at least 1000 for several different kinds to make any of the new elite/mining-grade parts and high mass ships, unless you go out yourself to get these resources (which takes forever considering the y-8 is not an effective mining vehicle), you lose alot of money for making these parts unless you sell them at ridiculously high prices. something needs to be done! plz voice your opinions and what you think could be done to improve the situation! i'll start it off...

  1. mining extraction rate needs to be raised. this can be done by increasing the amount of asteroid taken in when the chunks are destroyed or hauled in by the tractor beam. increasing the capacity of the cargo holds can also help, cutting the downtime between trips from the starport to the asteroid. make so the chunks float along much more slowly (less time jetting across the galaxy after a small tiny chunk, more time mining) maybe even allowing medium sized chunks to be hauled in by POB ships or the y-8 tractor beam (they are much larger after all, so why not?).

  2. y-8 needs to be made an effective mining vessel. blind spots in the current weapon set-up make it a hassle to extract the asteroid, break apart the chunks, pull in the small chunks, and deal with asteroid pirates. it takes a well disciplined crew and escort to even mine in kessel! try finding 4 or 5 other ppl that'll deal with all that with practically no incentive at all (elite engines are no better and sometimes worse than the normal mark V crafted)!

thats all i can think of for now. plz post your thoughts!

If they don't plan on changing the Y-8, I hope they add docking abilities and/or let us transfer cargo to it.

I can see a Y-8 surrounded by 3-5 mining starfighters that handles all the cargo in it's large 30k capacity cargo hold. The Y-8 could never fill that hold on it's own. It can station itself near an asteroid, break off chunks for the fighters and catch stray chunks that float by. Operations crew could facilitate cargo transfers from full miner/fighters so they can continue to mine without landing.

Do you know if a tractor beam works in the pilot weapon slot (2?) on the Y-8? If it does (or did) work, a fighter could break off a chunk, the Y-8 follows the chunk with /follow. The Y-8 turns on the tractor beam at 50m or so and the fighter shoots the chunk again with the mining laser. The Y-8 sucks up all the little chunks.

A Y-8 + fighter team might be able to mine more efficiently than two fighters this way. If anything, they would make fewer trips to the starport to unload.

With all the hassle of trying to get people to sell their stock for 20cpu. I dont think we will be able to make the new items without pricing high. I ended up using 2 of my 30k crates kits to get the Kessel and Dathomir asteroids... a waste, but at least I can focus on the other and see if people are willing to give up to a stranger what their friend shipwrights want for free.

The key word for here is teamwork. Contact your guild members and ask them to help you ming for you. I am a Master shipwright and I have offered them a choice that if they want a sertain part that requires asteriod resources then they will need to mine the resources and I will build the parts for a small fee to cover my resources. I think this would help out people mining and building elite POB components. Like I said team work. I currently have 4 others that are mining for me, and I am bringing in the resources like mad. hehe.

Also I agree that the POB ships need a lot of work to get them to become effective whether the Y-8 for mining or the other ships for combat.

i'd like to be able to build something connected with mining that DOESN'T require asteroird resources

if i could find a tractor beam and mining laser for sale i'd turn my tie light duty into a miner but that won't happen

starfighter extraction rates are just fine. The Y-8 is the "problem" really and the way most people are mining.

With a mark 3 mining laser and a tractor, i can fill a 1500 hold in aproximately 8 minutes or less (Wrote a timing macro to check) if i dont have anyone gumming up my works. The few people i see mining on gorath are running around in huge ships with 3 mining lasers shattering so many medium chunks that they cant even fly around and blow up all the rocks before they fly too far out of range or dissapear. And then the asteroid runs dry much faster because not only are they doing triple damage to the roid, but it quits spawning sooner because of all the missed chunks.

Would be miners! The key is a tractor beam! I use a highly manuverable ship and a mark III laser and tractor. Break off 2 medium chunks, suck up the rocks and go back for more. Ive managed to make almost 3 full runs on a roid without it needing to be reset.

The idea of docking with the Y-8 though is great. We need either that, or a mining "drill" that can just tap right into the HP of the asteroid. No spawning chunks. Just have it put like 10 units in the hold for ever 1 point of damage. Hell, make it take an hour. I dont care. The running around and tracking chunks is going to be impossible to make practical for the Y-8 no matter what bugs they fix.

Now that's a good idea!

On another note, if you're on Corbantis, a friend and I are planning on starting a mining buisness....

the ming laser is a weapon right?

so then is the tractor beam a weapon or an ordance?
