Thread: So... Reverse Engineering... what do you guys think?

Is this actually a valuable skill, or does this just seem to be an annoyance, kind on the same level as people bugging AS/WS to repair their weapons and armor?

I got some matches yesterday, level 3 and level 2 stuff... did a few RE, didn't really seem worthwhile to me, only improved the part 1-3%. <shrug>

Maybe I am missing the grand scheme of things. Anyone?

i may be missing something but it seems to me to be a big waste of time. The bonus you get to the stats of the item from REing it is pretty irrelevant. The percent boost in stats seems to be equal to the RE level of the items. So a level 1 item gets a 1% boost, two level 2 items gives you one item with a 2% boost, etc. At low levels, 1% is meaningless. If this trend continues to the higher levels (which I don't know), it's still going to be meaningless if what people are saying about the low stats of the higher level loot drops is true.

I'm all for that.

Plus, reverse engineering gives you a chance of getting Firespray schematic parts.

that does sound potentially useful. I haven't done enough 2 items to notice that it was combining the best stats of both items. I'll have to look into that more.

That's the point RE combines the best stats out of ALL the items, and adds a 1-10% bonus to the final numbers. So if you RE a lvl 1 component, you only get the 1-10% bonus. If you get the right items together you can potentially make an item that no shipwright player can come close to duplicating. This is how ppl are going to set themselves apart from one another in space.

I've figured out the subtleties of RE. Basically level 1 and 2 is crap. The RE is only worthwhile on Kuat items to try to get the firespray schem.

Most of the better components will be RE components in the end. For the most part, there is no overall "uber" loot. You may get a component with a few really good stats, but other stats will be avg or poor. Thru RE you can make a really good component. Here's an example:

Laser 1: Laser 2

Energy use: 60 Energy use: 120

Dmg: 800-1200Dmg: 1000 - 1400

Fire Rate: .50 Fire Rate: .65

Lets assume these are both RE 2. You put them both in the tool and you get ONE item with the following stats.

Energy Use: 60

Dmg: 1000-1400

Fire Rate: .50

Your numbers are a little off. You forgot to put the 2% in. It wouls look like

Energy Use: 58.8

Damage: 1020- 1428

Firerate: .49

Not much diffent but if you did the same thing with level 10 (I think that is the highest) and the other 8 parts where all wost it would look like

Energy Use 54

Dmg: 1100-1540

Fire Rate: 4.5

I see RE as a great way to make loot (even no so good loot) worth some big bucks. Also I do not think people will be destroying loot as they will at the very lest put it up on the bazzar for 6k even if they do not have a vendor or a friend that has one.

Okay thank you guys... I was just missing the grand scheme of things... had no idea it COMBINED best stats to make a better item. Alright I guess RE isn't so bad now.

What level of SW can I RE items? Can I just pick up Novice and be able to RE all my loot?

I'm all for it. REing requires some tact, and is one aspect of SW that isn't quite so easy to understand. I've gotten some pretty crappy results until I figured out what I was doing, and now I get some very nice things.

So can it all be done at Novice?

I have not played with it too much. I ditched my starter ship before even getting to space. Crafted my own ship and reverse engineered various loot components from friends to use in the ship. I'll play with it more later, now I am too busy crafting.
