Thread: Do you charge for Reverse Engineering?

I charge 500 credits per RE level and I'm considering bumping this up to maybe 2k per level.

Every pilot I have RE'd for will complain about being charged. On the other hand, I've never had a pilot refuse my price as the end result is a very nice component for a very small fee.

A large portion of crafted components are inferior to looted ones and long-haul shipwrights aren't making very much money any more. I think that a lucrative side to our business has been carried out free of charge for too long.

I think we as a community should get over our quest for Firespray disks and start charging fair prices for our services.

What do you guys think?

For regular and loyal customers I'll do it for free, for people who I don't know I charge about half the price of a crafted one of the same level.

I don't charge and probably never will.

Since you're getting over your quest for firespray disks, can i have yours?

I don't charge, but I will accept tips (though I never bring up tipping). I do it to help my friends, bring in customers, and get a chance at KSE disks. Strangers that seek me out for REing usually tip, so I can't complain.

I accept tips, but I don't charge. Most people tip around 5k per job.

I just ask them to tip whatever they feel is appropriate to how much they value the end product. In general, saying that has resulted in some very, very nice tips (50k is not uncommon).

On the other hand, I do get a few comedians who /tip 500 and walk off. So there is a bit of a natural balance struck there.

I get between 10-50K per RE job, it's sort of a "suggested donation" thing. My time's valuable, though, and I think the expertise I bring is worth something, so I think they're getting what they pay for.

Good question. I am a 4 time Ace pilot that am working my way to Master Shipwright just because I hate waiting to find a Master SW to RE for me. So, that being said, I would most likely pay anywhere from 2k-5k per level without even questioning it. And even more if I didn't feel like waiting. When I master, I'll see how it goes with charging for RE as I do not plan on crafting at all for profit.

It depends, if they supply me with the parts it's free.

If I have to loot/buy the part (which I will pay other players10% above what the chassis dealer), base prices are the following:

Lvl 1 RE: 1500 (Mind you no one buys Droid Interfaces at this level)

Lvl 2 RE: 3000

Lvl 3 RE: 6000

Lvl 4 RE: 20000

Lvl 5 RE: 30000

Lvl 6 RE: 42000

Lvl 7 RE: 56000

Lvl 8 RE: 72000

Lvl 9 RE: 90000

Lvl 10 RE: 110000

I know the prices are a bit steep but if I sold the part to the parts to the chassis dealer i'd be making almost the same amount.

Mind you I won't get discs out of it but who wantsspace to befull of booboo feet wana be's?

Mind you the Lvl 2 and Lvl 3 stuff I lose money on but as a starting point for a repeat customer base it makes good business sense.

Having a Shipwright I can sit down with, ponder buildouts and work up custom RE plans while making my ship as close as possible to my 'dream' is near-priceless for me.

To that end, charge me for RE, whether I bring the parts or not. It's worth it to me to build that kind of rapport.

I charge 1k per produced finished part from the RE tool, regardless of level. Never had anyone complain yet- I wouldn't charge more than that though, as really it is such a simple thing to do.

Most people pay me more than that anyway because they are so pleased with the result. 1K is nothing to get you a quality RE part, whatever your level really. If it didn't take up uses of my RE tools, I wouldn't charge at all. But I think 1k is fair, only for my time and the fact that I often have to explain how RE works to people who have no idea about it.

Personally I see nothing wrong with your prices. I myself haven't had the pleasure of dealing with customers yet as a SW (I mostly concentrate on myself and friends whom I don't charge), but for anyone I don't know, I see nothing wrong with charging a price for my time. Even if someone brings you the parts you must remember how long it took you and how many resources it took you to reach the level of expertise (skill level if you will) to be able to perform the task of REing.

Even smugglers charge a decent amount just for slicing weapons and armor, and for pilots a RE'd part can be multitudes higher in value for them than a sliced weapon compared to non-sliced weapon for someone on the ground. For someone like me it takes more time to find the parts to RE than it takes to earn enough money flying to pay for reverse engineering, even at these prices.
