Tractor beams in turrets not controlled by the pilot have a very low success rate. If you can't put it in a slot the pilot controls you should think about changing ships.

when you install your weapons onto your ship, check the visual picture of the ship in the component selection screen. Make sure that the mining laser is installed inthe weapon slot that the pilot can control (easily seeable on the visual feedback), and put the tractor beam in a weapon slot not controllable by you (a turret).
With the 'Toggle Tractor Beam' option in the keymap window, you can still fire the TB, even if it's in a turret.
I belive what he is saying is that the pilot could control it using the togle button which would set it on in the default position.....
*ponders if this works*

Generally it doesn't, that's what I'm getting at.

I started mining in a Y-Wing, and was very happy to get the tractor beam animation whenever I switched it on. Then once I gota Y-Wing longprobe, my response was "what's this pulling effect?"
A turreted tractor beam (without a gunner) doesn't do anything, even though the visual is there.

right now i have a ryykyxx (i know i butchered that name...) with an elite class 3 mining laser in number 1 and 2 slots, doin combined damage of 2500, and tractor in number 3. i find that with the lasers grouped together they mine very quickly and are effective against many enemy fighters. I had much more trouble defending myself when i had an actual weapon in a single slot and a laser in the other, but it works nicely now, still i would like to complete the quest whether the y8 sucks or not

Finally got around to trying out mining today—yeah yeah, I know I'm a late-comer, I quit right before JtL came out and only just came back—and noticed something I didn't see in this thread, so I figured I'd mention it. Weapon Overload works on mining lasers, both to speed up the mining time (with WO it takes me 2 hits to crack a medium chunk, without it's 4) and against the inevitable asteroid bandits.
(Ooh, look, I even got the post in the right thread this time)
