If I'm not mistaken, A-wings and TIE advanced's have a 1.0 speed modifier, so a 92.2 speed engine will give 922 speed, a 95.9 (re'd pre-nerf engine) will give 959 speed, etc.

"Hokey maneuvers and single weapons are no match for a good superiority fighter at your side"
Ok, so I modified the quote, you should be able to get my point. A-wing maneuverability is one thing, I prefer to have a heavier loadout in my X, being able to bring about that much more firepower. The way I see it, the longer it takes me to kill someone, the more time they have to call in their friends. When I can load two really top notch guns (one being a RE'd Tri-cannon) into my X along with really strong shields, an armor "insurance policy" and still have room for practically anything else I need, AND only sacrifice 49 in top speed to the A-wing, but be able to carry a heavier, longer lasting booster, I'm gonna take the X every time. Besides...it's a freakin' X-wing
Thedebate between A-wing afficionados and X-wing afficionados will last a very long time, and I doubt either side will ever convince the other to the point that they can say they "won." Each has their strongpoints, and the beauty of an A-wing is that because they only have one weapon, they only need a small reactor, a smaller capacitor, and armor can be considered optional...though I would put on a bit of Mark I personally, just again for an insurance policy. These changes alone would seem to be enough to make up for the lack of mass.
And to the Imperials who complain about the rebel mass. You're expendable. To the Emperor that is. The Empire's starfighter tactic consists of throwing as many ships as necessary at the enemy, quantity over quality. The rebellion is small and requires its pilots to stay alive longer and against much greater odds. Be happy that you even have shields...except for the Advanced, you really shouldn't.

Duel one.
That's really the only way to know which ship/pilot is better.

I have. it's 50/50...mostly depends on the A-wing's lag. A-wing lag shields > any armor.

The fact that these arguments are cropping up is a good thing.
It shows that the developers managed to get the balance right by giving pilots the options of more mass, or more manuverability.
Its a lot more 'Starwars' to have some people who adore different ships. Personally I love the A-wing, since I spent ages getting a decent loadout, but I have a friend who uses a mix of an extremely good engine, and some overload programs and has managed to get a quite manuverable Y-wing Longprobe.

Very quick, down and dirty answer coming here.
1. Cut down your mass on the reactor DRASTICALLY. You will never need that much energy generation in an A-Wing. Find a level 1 reactor loot or, even better, find a Shipwright to make you a Mark I Reactor.
2. You need to get your reward engine RE'ed. You'll cut at LEAST 5k off the mass.
3. Drop the armour. You won't need it, especially if you equip a very good shield. You won't get hit often enough (in most cases) to have to worry about armour. And if you DO have to worry about armour... well... you're pretty much already toast.
4. Drop the booster unless you're PvPing. If you have a FC with all the overload 3 programs you have no need for a booster in PvE.
5. Get a good Level 7 RE'd weapon. That's all you'll need on the A-Wing. You'll be able to get on just about everything's tail and fire until they go boom.
6. You don't need a chaff launcher. You only need one when you know you're going into a tight knot of missile-firing enemies, and if you're doing that with an A-Wing you're wrong. That's what the X-Wing is for.
7. You may not need a missile launcher, though it can never hurt. If you have excess mass (and believe me, it's very possible), then you can install a missile launcher. But it's expendable.
The most important thing to spend mass on with the A-Wing is your shield and your weapon. Everything else, and I do mean everything, is secondary. Make sure you put all the overload 3's into your FC too. With your reward engine, a tough shield, a fast-firing weapon, a solid capacitor and your droid programs you'll be darn near untouchable in PvE. And you'll be pretty good in PvP too.

ah, great thread.. although,I think after reading all this, i'm gonna have to stick with the X-Wing.. will get an A-Wing to go out cruising in instead now..
I like being able to do some damage, and I don't think i could get away with it in the A-Wing.
current setup is:
Cap Recharge: 42.2 and it's a small level 2 (with level 3 overcharge, has max 2000 energy on it) RE'd
Level 5 Ion Cannon .9 Vs Shields Crafted
Level 5 Disruptor .9 vs Armour Crafted
Level 5 Blaster .55 against each Crafted
Level 5 16.5 Recharge Shields Crafted
Mark IIIProtons
Chaffs
Engine is only a 63 speed though
waiting for more components to put together my 79 speed one.
but this ship is about 100 off the total mass, i've squeezed everything i can in there.. the capacitor is very hard to run low, even with 3 weapons contantly firing, which means that things don't tend to live very long when i'm shooting at them..
and i've got a new capacitor waiting to RE with 45.8 recharge on it.. probably save that for a bigger ship then.. don't think i'd fit that alone into the A-Wing..
I think what's it's going to come down to is.. If i want to feel powerful, i'll take the x-wing out for a spin, with the risk of getting my ship blown up, cause i'm not very manouverable, or i get an A-Wing kitted out, and learn to fly better, and actual have a nice challenge taking things out, and be able to dodge a few things a bit easier.
Hmm, think it's going to depend on groupings.. just need to choose a role
