Thread: Crafted Engines VS Looted Engines

Hello all,

I'm a shipwright but have not done much shipwrighting lately, due to various reasons, but I'm trying to get back into it in force. It's a daunting profession and I suppose the best way to begin is to pick a few components and craft them well. In this vein I was wondering how crafted engines stack up against looted ones....I know that for the most part the best looted items are better than crafted ones, but which items are best to craft in order to compete with loot?

I like crafting engines, but have not done the necessary research to see if it is worth it in the long run or not. Any help in this regard would be much appreciated.

Crafted engines are ok. You can beat looted ones on overall top speed, but usually you can't beat them onYaw,pitch, and roll.

You can compete very well with loot by making reactors, armor, launchers, missles, blasters, ion cannons, disruptors, shields, and boosters if you make em right. Check the sticky at the top of this forum.

I make and sell high speed engines with p/y/r rates typically 10 to 15% below looted engines of the same rating. My buyers typically put them in the more manueverable chassis.

Reactors and Boosters are where I make better money, easily out performing looted of the same rating.

There is very very rare engine drops that beat crafted engines in all stats including speed. I would say they are 1 in 1000 drops though. These drops are more common at the lower levels. You will probably find that you can compete better making only mark 4 and mark 5 engines, the good drops are alot more common at lower levels, and everyone gets a lvl 6 reward engine thats better then anything before it.

P.S. Personally If I were you I would go for making missiles and missile launchers first, Reactors, Boosters (go for top speed, then reduce energy consumption).

My missle stocks get sold quickly, even though I charge more than some others I've seen, but then my resource quality seems to be much higher as my stats are better than the undercutters are. The great thing about missles is that they are factory supported, meaning I can keep up with demand.

Just out of curiosity, what do you experiment on with your missles? and what are the most popular types/marks that you sell?

Yep, Damage and Quantity....mostly max damage. Mark II's and III's Proton's tend to be the big seller, I'm guessing because they effect both shields and armor. Concussions come in a close 2nd.

Thanks to those that gave me all the good advice. I think the reactor/booster/missle route sounds the best, along with stocking a variety of higher end engines. Again, thank you.

Fuss, were your experimenting instructions for crafting boosters or engines?

Crafted shields are very nice, too; the only thing that can really beat them is the reward shield. Since you only get the one and it can be hard to fit into a light fighter, you'll still do plenty of trade in them.
