Thread: Ok I keep hearing RE is so much better than crafted.....
Depends entirely on your flying style.
The only REd things that, for me, are consistently better than crafted are weapons, and even then that's debatable now. Crafted Ion weapons have a higher DPS vs Shields than just about anything you can RE, and you're not scared of decay.
Engines are the other big point. Crafted engines are always faster, REd engines are always more maneuverable.
Since Darth_Platypus (all hail our dark lord and master) made a balance pass through certain components, crafted has become a lot better. I have a PVP ship that's entirely crafted, except for the engine (and thats only because I prefer high YPR over high Speed).
With Capacitor Overcharge 4, the Mark I capacitors that we can craft nowhit 60+ recharge and 1700 energy, and thats with less than 1k mass.
It takes a *lot* of flying to put together a decent set of REd components. It takes good resources and knowledge of your profession to put together a decent set of crafted components. Its work either way.

One of my better RE'd L8 engines:
26K mass
1500 reactor drain
76 YPR
97 speed
WHen it comes to space PvP, you have to weigh YPR wih speed equally. You need both. A super fast isnt going to do you alot of good. Infact it will make your turn circle about the size of a 20 ton tractor trailer.
A low YPR is a death sentence.
A high engine drain means you'll have hard time running EO4.
High mass means you cant fit in more parts.
Crafted engines, the YPR is too low, the mass is too high, and the drain is too high.
Any SERIOUS pilot would only use a crafted engine when hell froze over, or they're just really jonesing for an engine and have no intention to PvP at all.
EDIT: typed in high when i meant low.

25,327.6 Mass
1994.6 Reactor Drain
2507.1-3876.5 Damage
.67 vs Shields
.68 Vs Armor
13.4 Energy per shot
.387 refire rate.
It used the level 8 rebel quest reward and some other guns and is not even the best level 8 RE out there, but I dare you to find a level 9 crafted weapon that can touch it, it doesn't exist.
The level 8 Nym's reward engine will beat a level 7 crafted, as the YPRs can be in the mid to high 70s w/ a top speed of over 100 after RE.
When it comes to RE'd parts, I find that engines and guns are significantly better than crafted...and I'm a 17 point master SW.
Damage: 2387.7-3692.0
Vs. Shields: 0.625
Vs. Armor: 0.625
Refire: 0.425
That works out to an average of 4469 damage per second if you are holding down the trigger.
Now, an Experimental blaster with quickshot upgrade. With slightly better resources, I could do a little better, but this is what I personally use:
Damage: 1909-3092
Vs. Shields: 0.499
Vs. Armor: 0.499
Refire: 0.256
That works out to an average of 4874 DPS.
The well REd level 8 above works out to 5525 vs. shields and 5607 vs. armor. It is also a lot lighter than a crafted experimental blaster. A very good blaster indeed.
Now, if you want 3 of these for an Advanced X-Wing or Kryat, you are going to have to either do 3 squadrons or buy 2 reward blasters, as well as loot minimum 21 RE level 8 blasters. Even with that many, I doubt there will be enough good ones to make a good level 8 blaster, so plan on at least 30. That takes quite a while. Basically, why I use experimentals on my Kryat...
With a few exceptions: GOOD RE > crafted > bad RE > loot
You have to collect lots and lots of parts to create good RE jobs. Many times I have talked to people complaining that they cannot find good REd components for sale. There is a reason for that! Any good REd components are in use on the Shipwright's ship already.
Yes, good RE's tend to go in MY ship or my best friends... rarely to they slip outside of my grasp.
That is one hell of a nice level 9 blaster you are referring to btw, I only get about .482 vs using near perfece quality resources, and would need to use one heck of a quickshot upgrade in it to reach that speed... making the energy per shot scary... and the mass would still be obscene. Most of my crafted 9's come out around
1970-3341 dmg, .48 vs each, 26 eps and .35 speed Maybe I shoudln't touch the damage and leave it at base and experiment the speed and vs ratings... that would probably end up better in the end.
That level 9 you list looks well beyond anything I coudl possibly make, I need to start trying harder I guess.

With 3 of those on my Kryat, I am a gunboat killing machine! I want to go to L8 and L10 REd guns, but I do not have the parts for a good RE yet.

I just ran the numbers on this one. You're getting 3641 DPS with this weapon. Even though yours would probably sell faster due to its higher max damage, my blasters are doing 1200 more damage per second. See what you can do with a quickshot upgrade.
I RE'd a level 10 engine the other night and got 100 speed with 82 PYR!!!!. Dropped it in the Grevious and the thing handles like you wouldn't believe. A freind is using a mark V crafted with his pyr in the low 60's and he can go the same speed but has no chance in ever removing me from his tail.
I still think crafted is better than RE'd, and all who needa chassis on Tarquinas let me know. {Outlaw} Shipyards recently became 12 point chassis builders. Special thanks to Vargis for that one.
