Thread: Month 2 discussion Traps

Traps are a wonderful thing if you are a Scout. If you use them correctly they are a combat multiplier, enabling you to do extra damage or to decrease the damage you take.

Now, realize that Scout is still a basic profession. We get a ton of traps in our trapping line, as compared to the Rangers, who get two. I don't want wishes for the types of traps you want to see. I would like to have some honest discussion about traps, how to use them in concert with one another; what to use to help certain professions; and how traps can be made better.

I use P darts, Glow wire and Sharp bone spurs. TheP dart slows the creature, and in many cases, stops the creature dead. I then engage feets, move out of the creature's range, and continue to shoot at it. The glow wire drops the resists. Exactly how much is open for debate, all I know is I do more damage when using it then not using it. Finally, the bone spur makes the creature blind, decreasing his chances to hit me. Not being hit is a good thing.

I pretty much use these three constantly. I hunt with a lot of pistol and TK folks, so the Glow wire helps a lot. The spur helps the TK guy not get hit, and the Pdart gives us ranged folks a chance to move and shoot, while at the same time slowing the creature's attacks against the melee guys.

Pull up your "Combat" log sometime and see what kinds of damage you do with and without traps.

The only change I would like to see is that the "stated effects" as in the L dartshave an affect on creatures. Now, how dumb is this as all we can toss traps at is creatures, yet the effects don't affect the creature?? L darting a Ancient Rancor and the pistol whipping him would be a hoot to watch, as said Grampa Rancor would be dizzy and keep falling on his lard butt.

P-darts, Adhesive mesh, bone spurs

I was rancor hunting with some friends and was tossing P-darts like mad, and everyone was wondering what weapon was causing the slowness. I finally tipped them in that it was the P-dart. Another handy use is running for your life. Recently on Lok, i was ambushed by an enraged giant kimo while doing the rebel badge missions. I tossed a p-dart, burst run, and dragged him through a canyon corsair camp.

Adhesive mesh does the same thing for me on a shorter scale. I use that one explicitly for getting behind the tanks if I'm caught out in front.

Bone spurs are great if my maskscent gets broken and the creature's almost dead, yet still decides to charge.

I have never constructively used my ranger traps, just the ones from the scout line.

As a rifle user, I have shied away from traps since they aggro the creature, and (being unarmored and unbuffed) I have very little in the way of protection once a creature sniffs me out. Is there a tactic or strategy I am overlooking that can help me use traps while using conceal shot, or maybe help me when a creature aggros me?

P-dart and Glowtrap are the most useful for ranged professions and P-dart and wire mesh for brawlers.

Sharp bone spir ain't bad, but in truth as a rifleman I haven't used trapps in a long time (sorry but 3 free hits does better than a trap)

My primary use of traps in my grinding days was maintaining distance while working on rifle xp. I used to hunt torturs on Talus before they became a social creature (back in the day, when we had to walk barefoot from town to town, in the snow, uphill both ways), and I had great luck by applying a P-dart *and* adhesive mesh whenever either one would wear off. This method allowed for much faster kills than conceal shot.

These days, being a MCH allows me to use pets to maintain distance, and I also have basically given up on traps. I really think that I would continue to use them, *if* they were stackable. I'd say that we should be able to experiment and use better resources to create larger stacks, but the effectiveness should be static, so that stacks could be combinable similar to resources. This way we wouldn't have to constantly refill quickbar slots, and they wouldn't take up so much inventory space.

A trapping droid can sortof accomplish this, but they have other advantages that wouldn't make them obsolete if we were able to stack traps.

I also think that at very high trapping levels (more in the ranger realm), traps should work on big game like Krayts, Kimos, Rancors, etc. Would it be a tragedy if we could blind or slightly lower resistances? Heck, a novice brawler can intimidate big game... P Darts and Mesh might be resisted by such creatures, but I think that the other traps should be able to stick.

On my Intrepid alt, he's a MRifleman/MRanger and I hardly need to use traps since most of the time the creature is dead before its in melee range. Although when in a group big game hunting I will throw p-darts and the trap the negates the creatures ranged/melee defense. Gonna have to start using bone spurs again too!

Now on my TC alt, I've been bad and ignored him for the better part of a year now and deceided to start leveling him up. Gonna make him a MRifleman- Ranger 3/0/4/0 - TK 4/0/0/0 andstarted using traps again since theMarksman rifles is slow going. They are truly life savers at this stageof the game... I'm just used to landing almost allof traps from Intrepidso its frustrating on TCwhen the traps miss.

JB, I was under the impression that creatures couldn't be dizzied, so whyis that the state effect for L-darts?

The dizzy state will stick to creatures (as in the icon will pop up), but it doesn't have the same correlation with knockdown as on NPCs, so it doesn't seem as useful. Honestly, after playing since the game went live, I still don't really know what dizzy is *supposed* to do beyond making it difficult for KD'ed NPCs to get up.

Weiquinn is correct, in that creatures can't be "dizzied" as we know it. L dart a tortur, pistol whip the same, and he gets up and stays up even tho he is "dizzied".

Y'all will notice I don't use L darts. It's on the list of things to be fixed. No, I am not holding my breath, as I don't look good all blue and lying on the floor (been there, done that, got the Heimlich).

I really want to dizzy a Rancor and pistol whip him and watch him fall down and go boom a bout 5 times.

I've been using Glow-Wires, and Adhesive Mesh. I'm a Master Carbineer, so I use the Glow-Wire off the bat to drop the defense, and when he starts charging, I throw Adhesive Mesh to stop him just before he hits me. if he gets to attack, I step back two or three spaces, and keep pounding.

no complaints so far...

My primary trap is glow-wire and my back up is sonic pulses from the ranger line. As a TK i can apply a lot of states but I can't do an area of effect stun like the sonic pulse can do. And no profession can drop resistances like glow-wires.

Glow-wire is a combat multipier. I love that trap and think its one of the better reasons to have any trapping in scout.

As for the trapping droid. Mine's loaded with P-darts and gets parked 50m from a lair. Nice to not waste a combat turn on traps and my max range is 45m and the droids is 60

Currently my primary traps are phen. darts, glow traps (both kinds, wiresforgrouping), bone spurs, andadhesive mesh, with an occasional sonic while soloing. For actual hunting (e.g. organics gathering), I hunt without armor or buffed, so traps help me survive by my wits and laser carbine alone.

I haven't looked at my combat log lately, but I know that the right traps do impact my effectiveness as a hunter. JBMat, you are correct that the L. Dart should be looked at. My preference would be to either fix it so it works as advertised, or change it to asingle target"mezz" (like that will ever happen!).

I thought it was 50 meters range on traps - not 45.
