Thread: Best weapon for scouts?

Ok... working my way up scout now towards master ranger hopefully, but I have a question about choice of weapon.

I had been using pistol and have reached Novice Pistoleer and it seemed well suited to the Scout...

On the other hand I have seen many people that suggest Rifle for Scouts... but after working rifle up for a while now, I just don't see the point! I mean, we use traps! At least I do... and so to throw my traps I need to be somewhere around what... like 47-49 meters out from the target... or closer? So how are rifles a good choice when you're throwing traps? By the time you get your traps off, the target is too close for Rifles to be nearly as effective as Pistols!

Am I missing something here? I'm feeling that I need to go back to Pistols and throw these rifles back to the heap.

Any ideas on what YOU think the best choice of weapon is much appreciated.

Hi there!

I've been using a pistol since I started out on SWG.

The pistol I have been using so far isa sliced DL-44. Maybe not the best weapon around (haven't experimented with other pistols yet),

but it has served me very well so far.

Master Ranger and Master Pistoleer.

Go to the Ranger forum, there is a post listing the pros and cons for the combat classes for Rangers. It applies to Scouts as well. Great post. Not mine even.

Quite honestly, any combat profession works with Scout/Ranger, as long as you know how to use it.

As for the best pistol, there isn't "one". Checking an animal's resists and using the best pistol for the job is smart. example - Endorian crazed gurrecks have resists to some stuff, but not acid. Use a DX10 and the entire shot hits, not a percentage.

You're right... due to restrictions placed by Rifleman's range I don't use traps as often as I could. What generally tends to happen is on the average single creature I will open with Conceal shot. Let the rifle soften the creature up and as it charges consider using Adhesive Mesh to stop the creature in its tracks. After that I'll use any other specials as they become available.

I know alot of Ranger / TKM and although I've little experience with the TK profession they've told me that its a great way to move through mobs with good speed. Similarly they've offered the point that against NPC targets it allows a good offense AND a good defense once you've factored in the Meditation and state bonuses.

My small time as a pistoleer (while I was leveling Rifle and needed up close defense) was fun I admit, and JB has some good points about the wide variety of damage types.

In the end... Scout and Ranger are complimented by most of the available Combat Professions. It comes down to playstyle most though. If you're enjoying Pistol stick with it. There are some great guns out there and a very large variety of options in any given situation.

The reason what most riflemen (at least me) don't bother with traps is that we really don't need them.

My suggestion would be to do what I did when I was levelling Scout. I used Pistols the whole way through the trapping trees, and most of Master Scout. But after that, I switched to rifles and (other than a brief dabble with swordsman) I haven't looked back.

There's no ranged combat profession as powerful as Rifleman, and you'll be able to take stuff down much quicker with it than with Master Pistoleer. I can solo AT-STs. I can solo some Krayts. I can solo Kimos.

But that's my personal perference. As WildBill and JB have said, it's really up to you - any of the combat professions will work.

And yowankenobi, as a novice pistoleer, you should go up to tree with fanshot first, and make sure to get Melee Defense Knockdown 1 ASAP. You should also invest in a good Republic Blaster.

As a long time training master pistoleer (i took the looooong route of 4 months until i mastered it, so that means i had plenty of time to mess around with it) i can tell you taht pistoleer is an excellent profession to get a large amount of meat from unarmored critters.

But just recently i took a nice stroll down rifleman alley........ye gods it was humbling......

if you're a rifleman with an obedient droid you can literally find a spot in the middle of three nests and plink away while the droid fetches for you....it's sickening how much easier it was to get meat and such with the rifleman than the pistoleer.......

If you are looking for meat or hide, and have good armor and buffs, Dathomir has a bunch of large creatures that drop lots of meat. Enraged rancors drop around 250 meat per kill.

rifleman is far better when hunting big game.....and get big amounts of meat ... and quicker.... first of all... at master you shoot as fast as a pistoleer but do more damage...rifleman have strafe shot 2 which hits all targets in an area spread and does about 2k-4k damage....that is a master rifle shot...but if your not master.....flushing shot 2 works well too.... i am master pistoleer right now...and i hunt often...rifle just made things go smoother....and i even have bh pistol 4 too...so im capped on speed and accuracy......best pistol is scatter...or republic blaster just for killing random MOB's... hope it helped

Rifle is better even if the FWG5 Pistol has a higher DPS rating than the T21?

I guess what concerns me the most is that when you don't kill the critter in the first shot... all his britter buddies come running in for melee... and and that point... you might as well use a stick instead of your rifle for up close stuff. Why not just master in pistoleer and use the FWG5?

Don't get me wrong... If I knew the answer I wouldn't have started the thread. I just want to figure out which weapon to use for "all-around" situations. I would rather not have two weapons to have to choose from.
