Thread: Fishing confusion

Hiya!

Okay, I'm probably a bit unusual, but at the moment fishing is the main thing I do in SWG right now. I do a lot of fishing and have tried to figure out just what is going on with it... but I'm really confused. Things are so random that it's hard to figure out what is affecting what, or what I'm doing right or wrong.

"The fishing side of this is being addressed by letting fishing give Wilderness Survival XP."

That's great news! The dev post also says that the size of the fish you catch affects the amount of exp which is the way it works, but.....

What do I need to do to catch bigger fish? Does your level of survival skill affect your chances of catching a fish or of catching a bigger fish? Or is it all totally random? Is there a difference in types of bait? I've caught fish in every type of fishing spot, different fish density, vegetation, etc... The only time I was unable to catch anything was once when all of corellia turned up with Zero stars for fish density after a patch. But, as to the size of fish I catch... I don't understand it... the best I can tell is that it's random?

Does this fall back on the quality of fishing pole you use? I make and sell high quality fishing poles under the assumption that this is helping in some way... but trying different quality ones it's almost impossible to tell a difference experimentally.

The post mentions that catching "trash or loot" does not give survival exp. Has anyone caught trash or loot? I've done a lot of fishing and have never seen anything besides the usual 7 types of fish. I must be doing something wrong, but I've fished almost everywhere I can think of....

At the current rate it takes hours and hours to harvest any decent amount of fish meat. It's definately the hardest inorganic resource to get as far as I can tell. I hope Bio-Engineers don't need too much, same with Chefs.

Help on any of these questions would be great.

FYI...So far I have hit 4-5 star fish density in the water areas where you can actually see groups of fish swimming....

Guys,

Generally, the higher the concentration and the ***** rating, the greater liklihood that you are going to catch a Whopper.

I will defer to Kissalicious, the Fishmomma, on this one - she caught the biggest fish I've ever heard off...almost 1m.

I suck at fishing.

I caught a .96 fish last night...grin..can you beat that?

i don't know how random it is. Sometimes I do GREAT other times I don't. Seems pretty random to me too.

squidwalker: I think Shinichiro already beat me to the answers. I think the problem you're having is that you're not hitting 'OK' after you hit on of the 'tug' buttons. Another thing you have to do is be sure you're standing with your feet in the water, peferably up to about your waist. It says you can fish within 2 meters of water, but everytime my feet weren't actually in the water, I've had every fish get away. As for the 'fish density', when the fishing window opens there'll be several things displayed. One is the status 'waiting...', 'nibble' etc, then below that is the fish density with a bunch of '*', then vegetation with another set of '*'. The higher the fish density the more likely often you get a nibble (at least that's my guess what it means) and the more vegetation, the more likely your line is to snag, causing you to lose your fish (it'll go into a 'line snagged' state and you have to either tug of reel it off the snag).

I've caught fish of almost all sizes, never gotten on that was 1.000 meters or anything, but have come quite close. It depends a lot on the type of fish, some are just bigger than others.

Still... I have not caught any 'loot' or 'garbage' even when fishing in the middle of the park in the center of Coronet city. If there were anywhere that you'd catch garbage, that would be the place, I'd think. I've tried fishing a number of places, including Agrilat Swamp and the Gungan Sacred ruins (that was a 5 star fishing spot at the time)... but all I ever catch are the basic 7 types of fish... no matter what I do. Anyone caught anything else? Or does anyone know for SURE how some of this stuff works?

Davian, I have a question for you. What is the trick of fishing. When I was last on Correllia I tried it. Went through about 6-7 worm baits and didn't catch a single thing. I would get the nibble message and start doing tug, reel, and side tug stuff. What is the secret? How do you start once you get the nibble?

And you mentioned fish density. What is that, how does it work, and how do I find that out? I would like to try fishing for the fun and to see about harvesting fish for people.

Thanks

When I fish and get a nibble I click "tug up" then "ok" and wait for it to refresh the info. If it comes up with bite or even better something like "your line goes taught" use "tug up" then "ok" again. If you catch something it doesn't really matter what you choose then. Fish Density is indicated in the fishing window where you choose your options. it will say something like... Fish Density *** The more stars, the more fish.

I assume that it is mostly random, and that pole quality affects the success rate after hooking something.

As far as resources, fish is definately one of the rarest. However the jobs that require fish are also rare. If you stockpile your fish and stumble across a chef or bio-engineer they will probably pay a nice penny for your fish.

I caught a striped fish the other night, behind my house no less, that was a whopping 1.03m I'll try to remember to screenshot it tonight since that seems to be quite the big one

1.03m? Maybe without the 1. Just joking...

What type of bait, rod, etc, were you using? What was the fish density like? And most importantly, do you know anywhere to get cheap beer? Fishing's no good without beer! I think it's a ripoff that the jawa's are holding the whole beer industry hostage... Corellia would be much better for growing grain that Tatooine!

Seriously though, I'm starting to think that level of survival skill affects fish size in the same way that level of hunting skill affects the amount of resources your can harvest from a corpse.... I wish there were some way to get confirmation on this.

I've been fishing since day 1 and I have noticed that my success rate has increased as my general level of scout increased. I levelled all the lines at pretty much the same rate, so it would be hard for me to hazard a guess as to which one it was. I've never gone through a whole stack of bait without catching at least one fish though. I found a nice spot on Talus, density is 4 stars, vegetation is 0.

Someone mentioned standing in the water. I've noticed that on Corellia, it is an absolute must to be at least knee-deep. I stand on the bank on Talus though. It might just be the type of water, on Corellia, I tend to fish rivers while the spot I like on Talus is a large pond/small lake.

This was on Naboo, about 1400m North of Theed, in the river within site of my house and PA hall. I was knee deep in the water, using a fishing rod that I crafted from whatever spare resources I had (grinding quality stuff, in other words). The bait was chum, fileted from the last fish I had caught. Fish density was about ***, vegetation non-existent IIRC. I caught several others that were in the .9m range as well.

Cheap beer? Yeah, the chef in our PA specializes in beer Give me a tell in game (Chilastra server) and I'll hook you up with him.

Don't know about the survival skill thing. I'm a Master Scout, and my catches range from the big one discussed above, down to one that was .2m.

Pole Quality does make a difference. I can often catch four or five fish on 2 pieces of bait with my 94.0 quality rod.

- Five star fishing is good.
- Five star vegetation is annoying. (One star vegetation is annoying. Although it is possible higher vegetation gives bigger fish. I find it too annoying to test.)

Lantyss's Secret Fishing Tricks:

1) Try to keep your line in the 4-6 meter range. The further out your line is, the more likely you will lose the fish upon reeling it in. Too close and you are more likely to stop fishing. Tugging reduces your range, so give yourself some slack.

2) Upon a nibble, tug in a direction. Any direction. This usually produces a +Bite+.

3) Upon a bite, tug again. If you fail, repeat (2) then tug in a *different* direction for this step. One direction is the magic tug, so as long as your bait holds out, you will hook the fish.

4) If your "pole flexes hard and the line goes taut" simply tug. You have an "amazing success" and any direction should hook the fish.

5) Likewise there are critical failures. There is nothing you can do about fish stealing your bait.

6) Your bait condition (Fresh, Soggy, Mush, Stop) seems to hold over to reeling in. The fresher your bait is upon hooking the fish, the longer you can play it out. Not that you have much control over this, but that is why you want to hook the fish as early as possible using (2), (3) and (4). If your bait runs out while fighting, your fish gets away.
