Thread: scout's best weapon?
I have to agree that, initially at least, the Rifle / Trap combo is the best. All you have to do is get Novice Marksman and 2 levels of Rifle skill to get Headshot and get Hunting I to get the schematic for the Sharp bone spur. Go prone at 48m range, Do a headshot, while the bugger is running around trying to locate you throw the sharp bone spur then throw in one more headshot and they are usually dead before they get to you. An even con will take a couple more head shots. Easy as pie and quick to get the skills necessary.
I have not used a carbine at all and I am skilling up slowly in Pistol skill for close in combat. You can drag your weapons from your inventpry onto one of theF-kay hotkeys for quick weapon swapping when you realize a beastie is going to get in close and start nibbling at your ankles.
to add to that, make sure that when the creature gets close to you, that you stand up. just switching to pistol isnt enough. you take more damage when kneeling. so when you switch to pistol....stand up!
also, ive found that throwing a trap FIRST works better. go prone, throw trap, head shot, beast dead. if you shoot first, sometimes they attack you before you can get your trap off.
1. approach to 49 meters (max throw range for traps)
2. throw spur or noise maker
3. headshot2
4. if target isn't down; warning shot to stop it's charge
5. follow with headshot2 as its running away
6. repeat #4 and #5 until target is down
This is a good strategy for tougher mobs that you normally couldn't take down solo. It keeps them from getting close enough to attack you. Obviously, this won't work on mobs that attack in packs.
Botom line: ranged combat should be a priority for scouts.
