actually, you can gain exp to the following equasion:

xp_cap = 2* xp_needed(highest_skill)

so if you run up the exploration bar to level3 and then start saving xp, you gain 20k xp and your cap hits. If you havent trained hunting at all, you can gain all 3 levels in one visit to trainer (1k + 5k + 10k = 16k).

Mask Scent is NOT a consistent source ofscouting experience until at least Explore 3. Then you can /maskscent at 70 meters, thenmove into the 65 meter "halo", and gain exp at a decent rate.

For those who have been succesful with maskscent, how do you do it? I've tried going prone and masking my scent and then slowing approaching reds but each and every time I am discovered. Is the success rate really low? I only have exploration 2 so that might be the reason. Just wondering overall if I am doing something wrong.

It is completely random, I have had success running, walking, crawling. But it has worked a total of 4 times. twice when I made expl. III and twice when I made Expl IV

I will start with this. I have had maskscent work for me. I did not receive XP for it. Not sure if this is a bug/nerf or meant to be.

When attacking creatures I use mask scent. I then target the creature. I can get off sometimes 4-5 shots depending upon speed before they notice me and move to attack me. Sometimes the creature I am attacking never notices me and it is one of his buddies that does. I am Lvl 2 and it has worked against paralopes and rasps.

I have never had maskscent work for me while running around. I've also heard that it will help in taming babies for creature handling.

This may be a "no duh" we knew that, but I wanted to share with everyone.

I have had some sucess with Mask Scent once I understood it a little better. Here are some of the things I have found out.

If there are neutralmobs too close Mask Scent will always fail. They seem to have the perment ability to see though the skill. This seems to be a bug to me but that is what happens,

Mask Scent gets more effective as you move up the Exploration Tree. When I first got it, Krettles would sense me 75% of the time or more when I approached them, now at Explore III, I can run right though them and fool every one in the area (Only 13 exp each at this level though).

Moving slower does seem to offer some advantage but it is very small and not enough to worry about from what I have seen unless you are using it to sneak up and tame a baby.

You can unmask you scent and remask as many times as you want unless a creature detects you, then you have to wait the one minute. Make sure you unmask when you are not around aggressive creatures so that you can mask again immediately when you do happen across agressive ones.

I personally take missions against aggressive creature lairs. I go to the lair, scout out the area looking for yellows that will always detect me, eliminate those yellows or try to avoid them. I then back off from the agressive creatures and mask then slowly move toward them until I get exp or am detected. If I am not detected immediately I will skirt around them trying to get as many creatures to give me experience as I can until all the creature in the area give me exp or I am detected. When that occurs I back off again and kill all the creature around the lair. After the creatures are dead I remask then attack the lair. Each mob the emerges from the lair with make a check to detect me so I have a chance to get some exp there as well. I then destroy the lair and move on because once a creature has either detected you or failed, it gets a better chance to detect you the next time around.

This technique obviously only works on mobs that you can kill solo. I have heard of people going to the more hostile planets and just walking between hostile lairs using mask scent but don't know how effective this is as I have not tried it yet.

The ability to mask scent depends on your camoflage ability, which is a skill that has points just like rifle speed or foraging. My char is pretty good with /maskscent, and I'm only at Exploration II, because Bothans get a bonus to their camoflage skill. Handy, that.

when doing missions, after you clear the mobs, turn it on before you attack the lair. you will get exp as the mobs pop out.

Nuetral creatures do not always see through mask scent - I am a CH and I know this for a fact, I have tamed many many lil ones with mask scent up and running amidst a host of neutrals.

Fundamentally, it is a match up between your mask scent ability (including camoflage) against the relative toughness of the creatures around you. Tougher creatures have a much better chance of spotting you, especially if you are still in the scout levels and have not made it to ranger (or don't intend to). For me, I can run straight through an entire herd of paralopes without losing mask scent, but tortons and fambaas spot me almost every time. As I get into ranger I expect that to change.

My best success yet has been crawling up and taming a mottled wrix cub out from under the paws (literally) of its parents without being noticed - that was a worrying few minutes I can tell you!
