Use better ingredients to get better quality. When you have the trap selected that you want to create, check out the info in the lower right? screen - you may have to scroll down to see it all. The things that will improve the quality of your traps are listed there. I believe it's just overall quality for most of our stuff. Once you know what to look for, look at all the hides/bones/etc you can use to create traps. Look for those things that have higher numbers in the fields that make up your trap. The higher the number, the better quality from your finished product.

Artisan skills are supposed to help in experimentation, though I haven't seen this. My experimentation points are no different from folks who have no artisan skill. I do believe that training in artisan skills will help lower your critical failures.... Though that's not as big of a deal to us as it is the high-level folks like architects.
