Input from an armor smith:

Overall Quality, Malleability, Shock resistance over 500 = ok quality hide
Overall Quality, Malleability, Shock resistance over 800 = good quality hide
Overall Quality, Malleability, Shock resistance over 900 = great quality hide

What I am willing to pay (lots of 1k or more):

Ok hide = 4 CPU
Good hide = 8 CPU
Great hide = 10 to 15 CPU
*prices also depend off what mob the better quality hide drop from.

The above information is what I feel the hides are worth. I am not saying that people who charge/buy for less/more are right or wrong.

I also do not buy in lots less that 1k. I find it easier to collect my own hides if I only need a few hundred. I know not all armor smiths have the luxury of hunting for their own hides.

Overall I do not like the reduction to the harvest %. Due to my play schedule I do not have the opportunity to group often.

Just my 2 credits worth.
