Great! Well thought out. I was looking for an idea on how to improve the Survival line myself. Done. You got it. This would be perfect. (sorry but this idea made my day)

Now that I've shown how much I like this idea, Devs? What do you think?

Would scouts get Survival EXP for crafting traps and camps, instead of getting crafting EXP? Or in addition to it?

Scouts do not currently get crafting exp. Basically we are the only ones crafting items but we recieve no exp from the act of making them

Thus my idea to add this in as survival exp...

and /blush thanks for the praise perhaps if enough folks like or support the idea the devs will consider it, have scoutsyou know /sign in this thread

I learn survival just fine. You keep saying it would be more 'fun', but your suggestions are simply about exp gain. I hate to say it, but the grinders are going to get our survival exp nerfed just as they did maskscent. Use camps for the purpose for which they were designed - not as 'uber-exp-generating' pools.

As for your suggestion to have our traps and camps able to be sold and used by anybody? Ugh. You think it's tough to get survival exp in a group now? Wait until everybody and their grandmother wants to set up a camp - not just all us junior woodchuck scouts. We REALLY don't want to give away (or even sell) the very things that make us a necessary part of any group. Instead of wanting us along to toss traps or set up camps, they'll be all set because they hit the bazaar before they headed out.

I do kinda like the idea of gaining survival exp from crafting survival items - but this would open up a whole pandora's box. Crafters would want to gain pistol exp from crafting pistols, and the whole exp/skill tree would be thrown into chaos.

I hate to repeat myself, but camps are really fine the way they are. Use them at the end of a long hunting trip, or when wounds are getting annoying, or whenever you feel like sitting for a few. Craft for a while; work on surveying; invite that cute dancer out to the camp for a bite of melon; just relax and enjoy yourself. Before you know it, you'll have to train in survival and it'll be a lot less painful than agonizing over every little drip of survival exp you think you're owed.

Scouts *do* get general crafting experience for both traps and camps...I've never crafted anything else in my career, and I have Engineer III. It *should* however, give us survival xp.

My mistake, my craft experience is capped from making other items, and me not being a crafter.

Fun and exp are not seperate concepts in the game. Doing activities other then sitting in a camp is why I use the word fun. I can craft in many locations which allows me to socialize with other players. For instance telling tales in a cantina while working on traps, or if you prefer think of an old fisherman repairng nets while sitting and chatting with the townsfolks. Most folks are willing to socialize and have some fun in and around towns, but a rare few stop by a camp just to chat. Besides Sitting afk in a camp for 20minutes to gain survival has no fun side to it. So this is why I mention this as more fun, or if you prefer it has more of a fun feel.

I put this in a reply to a question about survival exp, but wanted to start it as a new topic open to discussion

Survival skill is the only scout skill that really needs some lovin IMHO. The rest of skills currently look good, with maybe a tweak needed here or there.

The fact you only get it form camps, lots of people can make camps and need the skill, and it requires huge amounts of down time to generate the exp make this the champion NO fun skill of the scout class.

Suggestion

A Have forage return survival exp. This change would provide a more fun use for forage.

B Allow scouts to earn survival exp. for crafting scout gear. Thus, the creation of a camp kit or scout traps would generate some survival exp. This would serve a few functions and make scouts more fun. First, if you got survival exp for crafting scout gear this would help address the current survival exp tedium.

Second, scouts could traps and kits to other players to make a little extra cred, not a huge market, but a possibility

Third, we have to craft them anyway, so lets get some recognition for the time we spend crafting! docs get med crafting and exp from making and using medical items, how about some survival points for scout crafting.

Why survival points? Well making a trap or making a camp kit is part of the concept of survival, and what I would consider part of the survival Lore. using a trap against an opponent is trapping exp, creating the trap in the first place is learning ways to survive

Hm, I'm sorry, really, but I find that in my group whenever a camp goes up, we instantly lose 20 minutes. Mostly because it's just so much fun sitting around and talking, maybe planing if we continue heading north or go back some other way, or whatever. Anytime I have a camp and somebody wanders by, it's a good 80-90% chance they'll greet me and ask permission to join me, which I quickly give. We chat a bit about what they're up to, how it's going, etc., and then usually they're on their way very soon after they heal. Once or twice it's been a nice longer chat.

I believe that the game's much better when you just play it and roleplay and have fun, and not worry about your experience, because then before you know it, you're all set. If you don't agree with this, then I wonder why you'd bother playing, but I'm more than happy to say that I believe your playstyle is just is valid as mine, and if you're really counting XP then it's no skin off my back.

However, and maybe you can see where I'm coming from when I say this, I think that the way camps currently work is perfect. I do agree that trapping might be better if crafting traps granted small amounts of survival experience (and I don't think that's the same as a crafter wanting pistol xp for building a blaster!), but I'm perfectly happy to live with it the way it is.

My two cents.

"Scouts do not get crafting xp"

Oh but they do! It won't show up if you don't have artisan though. I finally got novice artisan the other day and I had 1000 crafting XP already! It all came from tents and traps...

Thanks, Waho! No, unfortunately, I'm on Ahazi. I'm also leaving in two days to Germany for a month, which'll cut down seriously on my playtime. (But it's just vacation, though, so at least it's not like military service or anything weird/hard/boring.) It's funny; I leave my helper flag set all the time and the first three days I went around playing wondering why the heck I was being bombarded by questions, lol.

I desperately want to get my skill boxes filled, I really do. But not nearly as much as I want to just have fun pretending to live in the Star Wars universe. So although I haven't grouped lately (been packing so I've just been in and out of the game for short periods of time), I've still enjoyed myself. Not nearly as much as when I'm hanging out with my friends, but I'm having a good time. So I know the skill boxes will come sooner or later. It's truly the journey, not the destination (unlike my flight to Germany! ).

I agree 100%. I power leveled in DAOC to get to the PVP aspect of the game at which time I discovered I needed to power level more because my opponents were not the minimum level required for PVP (or RVR in DAOC terms). Anyway, all the grinding ruined DAOC for me, and I won't let that happen to SWG. I've been gaining skills moderately fast because they are all still in the novice stages, but I'm having more fun than I've ever had with an MMO thanks to the brilliant entertainer skill and the scout camps. If I'm playing in my multiperson camp, I'm almost guaranteed to get some company. Too bad I can't heal BF in the camp though ...no biggy..makes cantinas a necessity, and full cantinas are a LOT of fun.
