All my CHs out here,

Part of the fun of being in a community is that after a while, you get community culture going. With it comes inside jokes, things the community remembers and understands, and things that bind us together.

The Scout boards have a number of inside jokes. They include:

1.) Monkey making - My first letter to the Devs had a little typo in it that is now legendary, and will haunt me to my grave. If you see this on our boards, that's what it's about.

2.) Kreetles and Rasps must die - There are a couple of animals in the game that are loathed by Scouts. They include Kreetles (I'm the head of the Talusian Anti-Kreetle League) and Rasps (JBMat runs the local chapter of Rangers Against Weird Rasps). You'll see lots of posts about how much we hate them.

3.) The Master Scout Club - Anybody who makes Master Scout and posts here gets a welcome message from me, welcoming them to the Master Scout club, and they always get a less than fun initiation chore to do. These range from making me dinner, to rearranging my sock drawer, to cleaning out the Clubhouse Rancor pens. It's a fun, community building thing.

4.) Brisc Taunts the CHs - When I first started, CHing was the flavor of the month, and there were dozens and dozens of posts asking how to get through the exploration and hunting trees as quickly as possible because people wanted to be CHs. After answering them a thousand times and directing them to my guide, I started teasing people about it. And I keep this teasing up to this day. It's an amusing little thing that the Scouts expect. JBMat does the same thing over on the Ranger forum with the BHs. It's not meant to be mean (well, maybe JB does), just a little tradition that we have.

So before you guys go nuts and freak out on me because I tease folks about CHs and the tone of your forums, realize that this is just a long running joke that we have here and that we mean no disrespect. As CHs, you guys are an important part of the community and you are my constituents too.

Vertexon and I are two of FOUR of the original correspondents still remaining. So you've got that in common with us as well - continuity.

Anyway, I apologize if you guys took offense to my continuing the joke, but it's important for you to realize that that's all it was.

I hope that while you're here, you'll take the time to stop in and see all the great stuff our community does.

If you had spent any time in the CH forums you would have known how that comment would be received. We've had 9 months of trolls in the forum screaming for nerfs to CH, and it's still happening. We've had devs lie to us. We've had TH post insults every time he visits the forum (pokemon references). We've been nerfed to oblivion and had countless bugs "fixed" more than once but they're still in the game.

So after all that, and more, we tend to be a little defensive about a profession that we enjoy a great deal.

Cal,

And more power to you. I want CHs fixed as much as you do.

But no matter what happens, you guys should never, ever lose your sense of humor. It's what will keep you from going nuts when time goes bad.

There is wisdom in what you say but the Dark Side is Powerful. Anger/Frustration ... these things grow unchecked in the CH world. Sometimes its as if the Force is against us .... and we dispair that it will be so forever!

Sorry the other thread got so ugly Delta, I was mad but not "that mad"

Apologies Delta.

I'm fairly new to the game -- only about a month-- and as such I'm not well versed in the lore of these boards. I've come from Everquest and played a necromancer there for 5 years, and having been a victim of many, many nerfs there, as well as frequent cries for more, I tend to get riled when I see posts the seem to rip on other classes and professions. Trust me, I know all about living thru the rough times of a class.

Old defense mechanisms die hard I guess. Its going to take me a little while to get used to being part of a new community.

Ithink what threw me most was that I had read your scouting guide and found it quite helpful, and so seeing you rip on the CHs was a bit of a surprise (me not knowing the joke). Now that I know what to expect, I'll be better prepared in future.

Regards.

Kierlak, you're not the one that owes an apology.

friendly ribbing is one thing. But please be careful not to let it slide into actual profession bashing... which is what I feel you let happen in your joking post. Bashing another profession is never constructive, and won't improve either community in the long run.

You have the power to set a very good example for other players. Please use it wisely.

Other things that all Scouts and Rangers should know-

BHs all rode the short bus to school. Well, not all, but a good percentage.

Rasps follow me, they really do... I have even seen rasps on planets without them. Kreetles, I hate them too, like cockroaches. I freaking dread going to Tatooine for missions and goofing off, kreetles are everywhere.

Oh yes, the dreaded Scout/Ranger title curse. Wearing Scout or Ranger on your head means that any animal aggro'd byyour groupwants you for lunch - ergo Scout/Ranger lunchables. You can be AFK 500 meters away, on a bio break, in camp, and you will be attacked first. Creatures will ignore pets, other players, terrain obstacles, common sense, death, doom, destruction, flood, fire, famine and nuclear weapons to get to the Scout/Ranger first. Sometimes being in the grid square counts.

There are no command line commands for disbanding camps. Macros suck anyhow, you don't learn squat and you are a stoopid Master, rather than a learned Master. Yes, camping sucks, I did it to when Ranger was 20k more points and crafting didn't count. So make it fun.

Pickets have no bones. Largest, meanest, freaking jellyfish I ever saw.

The ability of the creature to harm you is inverse to how far away you will be when your maskscent breaks. Rasps and kreetles break it at 256 meters. Rancors at 1 foot. Always be ready to run. Burst running up a hill is your friend.

Hakai makes really good rice balls. Ask him.

TMB - Too Many Bozos

Brisc and JB are the same person - some numbnutz thought this one up. Really we are not, tho as correspondent Brisc has to be nice, I don't have to be. I will say an idea is stupid, whereas Brisc must be PC. I do the same over in the Ranger forum too.

Finally - waypoints for areatrack. NO NO NO AND NO. If you want to go Ranger, and can't read your compass rose on the screen... two words for ya - Image Designer. You want to see flames, suggest that. Almost as bad as BHs asking to buff up Master Scout, when we all know they want more BH stuff for no skill points.

just random thoughts

JB

PS - CH is ok by me, just not really smart to be one without a good weapons class backing it up, IMHO.

heheh......i like it that you have JB, Brisc.......honestly i don't think they have a right to be so crummy about you. You've been good to us, and unlike all the other boards you don't allow trolling (and in times like this you will stop a thread that become full out bashing rather than just ribbing).

I applaud you for apologizing, even if all it invoked was more eye gouging.

I know your on the defensive right now trying to defend the statement you made which seems to have offended so many CH, but perhaps I can be of help. As a corresponded you are not a "regular" member of the scout community, you are the leader. With this role you have to accept that you don't get to post what ever you want to say even if it is true and everyone knows it. It's not easy to be a leader anyone that has held a position knows that.

You may not have intended the remarks to have been taken the way they were. You may have been right on the money and called things they way you saw them.

I have no issue with anyone posting jokes or sarcasitic remarks, but it is the posters responsibility to ensure they are understood the way they are intended. Email and forums are a notoriously poor form of communication especially for emotionally charged issues that people try to represent on them. If you post a joke here, keep in mind the reader hasno idea what your "intent" is. They can't tell if it's a joke or if you are serious if your being sarcastic or derisive. It's the responsibility of the writter to ensure they are understood, then to not blame the reader if they are not. There are entire instructional courses in business centered on how to write emails that are understood and do not offend unintentionally. It so easy to do and many do not understand it, and that's why it happens so often.

Hope this helps line some ducks up. Feel free to ignore all or any part of this advice you see fit, after all it only one persons opinion.

BTW I'm a master scout also.

EDIT: Removed a long annoyed post and will just let this issue die because nothing I say will convince anyone of anything.

Delta, as a Scout you should know better than to poke a wounded animal with a stick.

I know you well enough to know it was a joke, but the other Handlers don't visit our boards enough to get the humor. That is part of the fun of message boards -- miscommunication, then roasting marshmellows followed by kissing and making up.

Kind of like camping, which set this whole thing off. Heh.
