Thread: Ghillie suit proposal

As Aldeon has included the ghillie suit idea in the top5 improvements thread I thought id knock up a summary for the people who missed the thread the first time round - and get some more feedback and ideas.

1) Ghillie suit schematic obtained at Conceal Box 2
2) Sniper made and worn - but requires parts from Tailors, Scouts(hide etc), and possibly BioEngineers.
3) Like armour it has a durability/condition value that degrades through use. ie 10% of damage taken is removed from the suits condition - but it doesnt actually prevent the wearer from taking damage like armour does. So eventually you'll have to make a new one.
4) Takes 5 units of inv space
5) User is unable to wear armour or backpacks when it is equipped - for the sake of balancing against the radar immunity advantage.
6) User runs 20% slower than normal - also for the sake of balance.
7) Changable colour scheme UI - like the sun glasses have - for the different terrain, sandy for tant, green for naboo etc. A base colour and a highlight colour. Similar colour choices as tailors get for the paramilitary stuff.
8) /conceal1 - new special obtained at Conceal Box 2. Similar to maskscent, and gives the user a boost to their camo stats till the wearer is detected. There is a 30sec timer (like maskscent) that prevents the user concealing again immediately after. Mainly to help moving around animals.
9) /conceal2 - new special obtained at Conceal Box 4 (Master). More of a boost to camo stat. However, this move also gives radar (and tab targeting) immunity to a range of 55m away from any other player (excepting group members). Like hide1 has a HAM cost to activate and a timer after concealment is lost. Immunity is lost if you get within 55m(50m?) of a player.. or after firing your first shot.

It wants to be more of a PvP defensive/ambush orrientated item - providing the user the ability to sneak up (or lie in wait) and get a key shot in before the target is aware of your presence. Also perfect for recon and observing enemy movements. On the downside you move slower, you cant wear armour (toying with an idea that during the 30sec penalty timer you cant remove the suit), and your inv is limited due to no backpack. Deadly, but more vulnerable. I think its a pretty well balanced idea (*cough*more than KD's*cough*), but the more polished we get it, the more chance the devs will take a look and consider it.

Heres a link to an image of one of the more recent types of ghillie.. thermal proof - kinda what i envisige our radar proof one to look like; as it has a sort of futuristic look about it.

I agree

One thing i would ask is that the hide need to be of specific quality, i.e. nothing that can be found on a paralope etc..

It should have to be at least 800+ in just about every possbility. Havign said that i dont know if such hide exist, but at the very least it should be high end hides - something like totur bulls etc.. Something that is challenging for the rifleman to kill.

Do you actually expect that this will get implemented by SoE? This suggestion of a ghillie suit that removes you from radar seems a little bit far fetched. It would seem that this sort of implementation would tip the scales of battle toward the way of the Rifleman by a big margin. If we are removed from radar, is this going to be for PvE and PvP... or PvP only. There are a lot of us out there who do not PvP and would find this another worthless addition to the Rifleman tree.

Thx for the constructive criticism there buddy. Ive tried to come up with several downsides to the temp radar immunity (limited range, speed, no armour).. plus you only get one shot before you are revealed. I cant see that as being groundbreakingly unbalanced. Why is it so far fetched? hunters and snipers try to disappear from sight as much as possible.. and the radar is the practical implementation of 'sight' in this game (due to both technical and usability reasons). Other MMORPGS havea stealth ability characters (AO Agents and Scouts in DOAC). I also stated that the suit would add to camo (maskscent skills) - which helps abit in PvE. You cant add much more as it will take away from the Ranger tree. Rather than just saying 'Your idea is worthless' you could try and help make it better.

Your thoughts on what a rifleman should be, would be nice. I'd be interested to see what you think.

I didnt mean to sound hostile. I was trying to get some information only. Personally I would like other implementations to be brought into this game before this stealth is.

The reason I said "Worthless" in my post is because of all the other abilities that Rifleman have that really dont do anything for me right now. I mean... look at Sniper Shot. I dont PvP at all. This ability does nothing for me. Look at the inert ability Block. Does that even do anything?

I am not trying to rain on your parade or anything, but I would like to see some implementations in the game that would generally help the Rifleman community as a whole. Such as making them more group friendly. How am I supposed to group with anyone the right way when i am the ONLY one attacking the Mind bar. I personnally grouped last night, and found that it was pointless for me to attack. My presence then became that of a Medic healing Damage.

I just feel that the devs time could be spent better in another situation. There are other things out there that NEED to be implemented before your idea should be even looked at.

And if you dont agree with this. What about the implementation of Conceal Shot as a pre-attack that conceals the shot fired afterward. IE: Concealed Headshot3. This was suggested already, but this is something that i would rather see than a ghillie suit. Does the same thing, but is MUCH more useful in PvE.

I love the idea of a ghillie suit for rifleman. Like the sunglasses that come with the special edition ghillie suits couldn't be traded to anyone without at least novice rifleman so pistoleers/carbineers ect. can't use it. For scouting purposes alone the ghillie suit makes a rifleman a much bigger factor in a PA war, or a large scale attack on cities like Anchorhead/Bestine. Making the player slower/taking 5 spaces of inventory are good ideas aswell to keep rifleman from then owning the game. /conceal1/concreal2 are good idea that would further hide riflemen in the game. If a rifleman can use the ghillie suit to stalk his prey, creature/NPC/PC and take the shot it would be a kill more often than not. I can't wait to see ghillie suits in SWG.

Stealth ability has been the plague of DAoC for it allows a player to chose its fight will the target cannot.

Despite I love being a rifleman, and being PvP-oriented, I wouldn't want such an ability to be added to the game, as it will only induce 40% of the PvP players to go to this profession. Furthermore, stealth abilities have never been satisfyingly balanced in any game of my knowledge. If there is a way to balance it, why not, but I seriously doubt it from the target's point of view.

I liek the idea of a ghuille suit, but if removing from radar will not go in, I would settle with a boost to camo or something of that sort. I would wear it msotly for looks however

I cannot agree with what you said salomon. If the devs wanted ust to follow the story and the adventures and storytelling had been the focal point, they would have put the settings around episode 1.

Star Wars from episode 4-6 is basically hack and slash with very little srtory aside the galactic civil war, which is translated by PVP in this game.

But your post was very well thought and I respect your opinion.

I hope the Removing us from radar does go into effect ... But they should make it where you get it at Master Rifleman like the OP said. Or else you will have every Dabbler just take the one branch that gives us this ability and likely get it nerfed.

keep up the good work Aldeon

well you can't say SoE is just in it for the money, because if they were they would open up classic servers and double thier income.

<<Most of the people in this game are not here for the PvP. Most of the people are here to immerse themselves in the story, >>

i think its about half to be honest ... 50% want for the roleplay and 50% want to be here because they want to take part in the GCW. To be honest i think we do ok in groups ... Use Flurry Shot in groups its does good damage dizzy and attacks a random bar(and take less Mind to pull off). Plus i dont think anyone said that well implement the Suit and Riflemen are perfect, at least i didnt read that. Im sure there will more moves for the rifleman.

Stealth in DAOC wasn't stealth it was Invisiblity, yes i agree it was a horrible system where someone could walk up to you in an open field and Stab you without you being able to do a **edit** thing about it. This will not be Invisiblity, Unless im reading it wrong you will be blocked from the Radar but someone could still see you in plain view. Also will be "uncovered" on radar if the target gets too close.

as for the other classes taking this ability. If you put it in as master rifleman i think that will deter people from getting it for one. also maybe you could add stipulations where you can only wear the suit if you have a rifle equiped. once "stealthed" from radar if you switch weapons you take a major penalty ... maybe you cant fire for 30 seconds. Thus detering BH's and all them from taking it, stealthing up to the target and switching to thier stronger weapon.

Well, I'm all for it. I know its only adding to PVP, but here is my take on it. SWG is a PVP game at first glance. You take a side, and battle it out in a civil war context that should catter to 80% of the players.

If you do not want to choose a faction and PVP, then you go neutral. Neutral is composed at 80% of merchants wishing to sell their goods to both faction, which is understandable.

Bottom line is, if you don't pvp, maybe SWG is not for you, and if you still think it is (which is probable) than Rifleman is not a professionyou are looking for.

If we dont implement conceal because of inbalance, fine. If we don't implement it because 10 people find that it does nothing to improve their character...then thats another story.

A character is adjusted for the good of the profession, not only for you.

Who said it was for only my good?

And SWG is not PvP at first glance. It is exploration and story based at first glance. Group oriented travel. It is a story based game with PvP included within.

This adjustment you talk about is not something that i believe would benefit us in the end. Other classes will take advantage of the ghillie suit aspect and turn the Rifleman profession into what the BH/Pistoleer prof is. A little of both=better than the origonal master. And do you really feel that it would be a benefit to us to have BH, Pistoleer, Carbineer, Commando, etc all in ghillie suits? I dont.

Most of the people in this game are not here for the PvP. Most of the people are here to immerse themselves in the story, and then later on, when they can actually compete with the other classes that are so overpowered to yourself until you reach master, you decide to do PvP. My reasoning for my thinking is coming from a non-hardcore playing style. I am not one of the game-hedz that spends all day on this game. I play about 3-4 hours per night.

Fine if the 1% of all Rifleman Masters are harcore mother F'ers. I am not there yet, and the huge majority of all the rest of the Rifleman are not either. There are other matters within Rifle class that need to be taken care of first before they should even be thinking about implementing something like a ghillie suit. This idea will lead to mass hysteria among other professions, and soon everyone and their mother are going to be screaming "NERF!" yet again.
