I am a crafter, but have been slowly pursueing rifleman with my character since the very beginning.

I have become increasingly frustrated because I cannot figure out what the heck /takecover is good for.

The problem is that once is have attempted to "take cover", whether I succeed or not, I am completely unable to use ANY of my other combat moves. If I take cover then when I attempt to use any head shot or mind shot move I am told that "I cannot do that while tumbling". Why would I ever want to take cover if once I've done so I can no longer use any attack moves?

Is it suppossed to work like this? If so, can some one explain what the benefits of taking cover I actually are? I just don't see any point to doing it at all.

It's not completely useless but it is a little broken.. Basically:

/takecover when successful boosts your Ranged defence ( imagine using your terrain to gain better defense )

You cannot move orwhile under cover unless you have the /sneak skill

You cannot use certain specials while under cover

/surpriseshot is supposed to be the only Special you can shoot from a "covered" status though at the moment it is broken and you can fire it even out of cover.

I think all of that is correct.

I don't use Takecover in PVP because you have to be prone and that pretty much means instadeath. In PVE it is only useful against NPC's with ranged attacks.. Any Melee MOB will run up to you and toast you pretty quick.

So it's not completely useless but in the current combat system it is not used much

Take cover works fine.

You must lay prone first. If you are stood then use takecover, that throws you to the floor, and you are tumbling. So you must lay prone first. You should try this from around 50-60m (a rifleman's perfect distance).

After laying prone, through the normal manner, use take cover. If you are succesful, the next few shots will not attract the target mob, and its friends, attention. In fact, you can fire off two shots, stand up, and then peace. So long as you arent too slow, this will stop the combat, even though your target has taken damage.

This ability works fine. I use it alot

now i've got two contradictory explanations for what it does. does it increase my ranged defense (which is what I expected) or does it decrease the probability that the mob is going to go aggro on me? I though conceal shot was for the latter.

Well as a Rifleman you have a "Concealment Chance" Mod, the higher this modifier the less chance you have of using bleeds and having everything aggro you and only pulling the one Mob. It also affects your chance of sucessfully using Concealshot without anything aggroing you.

So yes Concealshot is for the latter from what I understand.

dont forget it allows you to use surprise shot (can only be used while in cover), but i only used that once when i got the skill and never used it again (why use a weak single target attack when head shot does as much damage to one pool not a random one).

One thing I have noticed about /takecover is that when I go prone and use concealshot against Stormtrooper mobs, i notice that sometimes I am aggroed and have to run away.

When I go prone andthen/takecover, I can then concealshot them to my heart's content unless they are moving and get close to me, say around 35 or 40 meters. I have never been aggroed after using /takecover and then using concealshot except when attacking AT-ST's. I'm not sure why they attack after using /takecover and concealshot. Might be that I am only 4/2/4/3 and not Master.

So like I said.. pretty much useless...

I've never had trouble using conceal shot without take cover... but that's just me.

I don't know of /takecover adds any bonuses to using Conceal shot.. but being prone while using Conceal definitely has it's advantages. Accuracy and 3 free misses..

kneeling + mask scent gives you 3 free shots also

Thats what I use...Prone seems to have no advantage over Kneeling w/ Maskscent. The aim modifier is good enough for Kneeling.
