Thread: Line of Sight (LOS) changes, now on Test Center

You guys may want to ask about the new LOS changes, they may affect rifleman (as well as other profs).
While on TestCenter today, I was hearing from other players, one of them a Rifleman, who said that he was not able to fire at creatures that had moved into low lying ditchs on the ground. Apparently, the target must be realistically in front of your character in order for you to fire.
Being a noob marksman on Test, i was having trouble fighting stuff on hills due to the new LOS fixes that went in today. So, i suggest you try it out on TestCenter. It may not be a big deal, but it would be recommended to try it out, it will change some aspects on how you fight.
For example, a Rifleman lays prone and starts attacking a quenker, the quenker runs at you on a relatively bumpy, hilly piece of Dantooine. It runs into a ditch and stops, choosing to attack you with its green spit. The rifleman, 60 meters off and in prone position, will get a message saying that you are "out of range". Quite realistic, a nice departure from shooting through hills and buildings. It probably will be tweaked tho.
Consider this a heads up
Actually if this is true, I am glad they finally fixed this. Thank god no more fighting through mountains, now we can have some real strategy, like moving through a ditch or low lieing area to avoid fire. Could definetly make things more interesting.
THAT is my one question.
LOS is fixed for us, but is it fixed for them as well? If I can't shoot a person/animal laying in a ditch, they shouldn't be able to shoot at me either...

this needs to be asked of the devs pronto.
Klawlegna, sounds like a job for a correspondent!!!
i should have clarified that hehe
Yes, it is for all combat fighting.
I was using a noob cdef carbine on a lesser womp rat on a steep, bumpy tatooine hill, i kept getting 'out of range' system messages because it was slightly above me and partly behind a bump on the ground.
Like I said, you should test it out.
The reason because i posted this here was because I was listening to this rifleman on the test center chat room talk about having trouble shooting a critter that was in a ditch while he (or she, i'm not sure) was prone about 60m away.
I'm sure this will impact some PvP engagements and the infamous 'poison/shooting through walls' glitch.

Thanks for the heads up, and while your head is up, we promise not to shoot it. ![]()
Actually, I am glad for this change. It will probably take some adjusting and make combat more dangerous in some ways. For instance, if you are firing only once every 2 to 3 seconds as it is, and the target is dropping out of line of sight every few seconds traversing a bumppy terrain, You may now only get one or two shots at it before it gets to you. But on the upside, if you are being attacked, running behind cover will actually give you a chance to use strategy.
If anyone gets a chance, please check to see if this includes shooting through floors, such as what happens during base defenses where you go down to the bottom of the base to declare and get shot and killed by someone at the top of the base as soon as you do.
OMG, can CM's throw thru walls. I'm laughing here. CM's never could throw thru walls. If your getting hit by a poison/disease and your on the other side of a wall from the CM, it's because he nailed someone else on his side of the wall with an area poison/disease and it's area of effect went thru the wall. Nice work standing too close to a potential target. You get two thumbs up for your tactical brilliance.
Back to the line of sight thingy, if it's true, man will that make things very interesting. On a plus side, it will definatly add a greater sense of realism to the game. On a down side, new players who depend on range to succesfully attack critters might get their butts handed to them more often if they're forced to get alot closer to gain LoS. Interesting indeed. Hope it won't deter them from playing the game.

You mention a greater sense of realism, and yet you seem to accept poison aoe going through 5 feet of durasteel to hit somebody on the other side as reasonable? While line of sight is an issue, I think there needs to be some work done on aoe's and what they affect.
I went through the corvette the other day with a CM, and they threw one aoe health poison at the first mob we ran into. Every single mob from that time on that we ran into was poisoned except for a few out on the extreme edges of the ship. Any ranged profession can't use aoe attacks on the corvette because it draws aggro from everybody on that level as long as they're within 64m, even if it's through 10 walls.
*notices he's gotten off topic*
Anyway... yes, LOS would be good if they can do it correctly. I'd hate to be shooting a savage quenker, have him run into a hollow so I can't see him but he can see me, and be hitting me with that acid spit that just rips right through my ubese armor.

Another question... Does LOS work vertically as well? In other words, can I now shoot over those foot high logs that gave me "can't see target" errors?
If you can't see their feet, you can't shoot them. Small ditches, potholes, and those stupid rocks/logs will block LOS.
