Rifles have 2x not 3x.

Heavy Weapons are the ones that get hit 3x

You can still hit things at melee range - I always kneel, AIM, headshot. As your AIM effectiveness improves, you will be able to drop most things at your feet.

I suually take off running before it gets to me. If I cant kill it before it gets to me, I use Mind Shot first, then HS, HS, take off running, using HS.

I will try not to rant and rave too much here, but I am just about to the point where I am going to surrender every box in rifle that I have. The addition to damage that a rifleman takes when something enters melee range is not only unacceptable, but it is rediculous. The two enemies I encounter per week that actually stay out of melee range can be killed with my rifle, but everything else in the game finds my wookie flesh delicious. I average two deaths per night while hunting for resources to sample on Corellia, and I am supposedly pretty decent with my E11 rifle. Why should I have to train up brawler skill and two-handed weapons when a rifle can be used as such in close range in a pinch with no problem?

Give us bayonets. They can be crafted and mounted by a weaponsmith, or you could purchase them as add-ons. If something gets up close range, let us stab it with the bayonet or smack it with the butt of the rifle. It could even be another tier of the rifleman skill that we could train in. It just doesn't make sense to not give the rifleman any REAL range bonuses and then make us completely and totally combat ineffective every time a bunny rabbit gets within 15 meters of us. I can't leave my house for fear of something killing me, and I am a novice rifleman. Either that, or please reconsider the 3x damage bonus creatures have at melee range.

Try switching to a CDEF rifle at close range. While kneeling you should get a +10 modifier and be able to finish off the mind pool fairly quickly. I'm assuming it won't have much left by the time it gets to you.

There a few (very few) CDEF's in the bazaar that are in the 28-58 dmg range, with 3.5 to 4 delay. I'm finding mine ideal for the little melee range shooting I have to do.

If you intend on letting him get to you, your best bet would be to train in swordsmen, and drop it when you get higher rifle, or when you feel you wont be lettin anything get close to you.

I've got rifle specialist and I'm also about3/4 up the 2H swordsman tree. I open with the mindshot, followed by headshot2.Then when the beast comes charging I jump up and whip out the curved 2H sword ( katana ) for a 2H sword headshot as my closer. Nothing settles a confrontation quiteas quickly as a decapitation...

You really should consider going with sword. Not only is it hard to hit with the rifle in close range, but you take 2.5x damage. Also a tip, when running from melee, put the rifle away, you'll have a better chance of surviving.

You don't really need to learn anything else if you do'nt want to. Just go with the CDEF suggestion. That's what I do. I lead off with a mind shot from laser rifle, then a head shot or 2. they begin to charge and I go to kneeling position and switch to cdef. It works well and they're usually 3/4 dead before they even get to me. also, work your way up to adv ranged weapon support and get warning shot. Works wonders with a good fast cdef.

So I guess nobody agrees with my sentiments. My point wasn't that I didn't know how to use a rifle, but that fighting with a rifledoesn't seem logical or fun. As a craftsman, I do not seek out fights. This usually means that I do not have the advantage when I happen to get into a scuffle. AndI don't have enough points in my template to become a multi-tiered fighter. And it isn't like I make a decision whether or not I am going to let a creature close into melee range. If they don't con light blue, they will. I cannot shoot most creatures dead before they get into meelee range, and I just wanted to get enough skill to defend myself. My house is as close to town as I can get it, and there are still dangerous spawns covering my yard at all times.

I just think there is something wrong if the single weapon I choose for self-defense isn't going to keep me from being deathblowed several times a night. I wanted to have a bowcaster, because I am a Wookie. And I also thought that the bowcaster, although a certification I get as a Wookie, was a rifle. So what you are all telling me is that I either don't know how to fight, or I picked the wrong weapon. Oh yeah, that makes it all better.

By the way, I get at least 3 times the damage when I have my rifle armed, if not more. Whatever documentation states the contrary is wrong. I just tested it.

I'm going to get dog piled for saying this. but if you want to use one ranged weapon only, you might want to consider pistols. You don't get as much of a penalty to strike up close and they don't get as much of a bonus to hit you. if you don't go looking for fights, you don't need to shoot something that's at 60+ meters away. what you need to worry about is what's right around you and pistol is better for close range.

The only problem I've had with dying as a rifleman is when i'm killing Tuskens and get a group of 3 or 4 in melee range. Other then that nothing ever gets close to me. If something does get close try using pointblankarea1 i've killed a few sinlge Tuskens that have gotten to close to me with that attack.
